Where to stay in the Cultural Triangle depends on how you travel. On a first trip with a car, we’d sleep in Sigiriya village: the rock’s ticket office is a 1.2 km walk away and opens at 7am (Central Cultural Fund). For safaris, Habarana is 9 km from the Minneriya gate, a 15 to 25 minute drive. By bus, Dambulla has the bus station on the Colombo, Kandy and Anuradhapura routes (Wikivoyage). Kandalama, beside a reservoir, is 15 to 25 minutes from the Dambulla caves. Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Giritale are better as extra nights at either end.
Key takeaways
- Sigiriya village suits a first trip and an opening-time climb; it has no railway station, and in 2024 the last bus to Dambulla left at 6pm.
- Habarana is the only base within 35 minutes of all three park gates: Hurulu, Minneriya and Kaudulla.
- Dambulla has the bus station, a dozen banks and the shortest drives to Kandy and the airport.
- From the airport, a first night in Anuradhapura means driving the Sigiriya to Anuradhapura road once, not twice: about an hour less in the car on the planner’s times.
- The two nearby weather stations are driest from June to August, and the elephant gathering is never certain.
Which base suits which trip?
Each reason below can be checked on a map or a timetable. We name no hotels, and nothing here is a ranking.
| Your trip | Base | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First visit with a car and driver | Sigiriya village | Rock, Pidurangala, Dambulla and the Minneriya gate all within 40 minutes |
| Climbing the rock at opening time | Sigiriya village | Counter opens at 7am; 1.2 km on foot from the village |
| Safaris at Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu | Habarana | The three gates are 3 to 21 km away |
| Travelling by bus | Dambulla | Buses from Colombo, Kandy, Sigiriya and more |
| A stay beside a reservoir | Kandalama | A reservoir 4.8 km long, 11 km from the caves |
| The sacred city | Anuradhapura for the first night | 3.5 to 4 hours from the airport, like Sigiriya |
| Polonnaruwa by bicycle | Polonnaruwa or Giritale | Most Polonnaruwa guest houses rent bikes; Giritale is 13 km away |
Drive times from each base
Every cell links to its route on OpenStreetMap’s planner, run on 24 October 2026 and rechecked on 25 October. The planner expects empty roads, so each result is rounded up into a usual range by the rule our Cultural Triangle guide uses. Where the road to Kandy or the airport passes Dambulla or Habarana, we added half an hour to match that guide and our airport page. Sigiriya is measured from the ticket office, Dambulla from the cave temple; h means hours.

The three central bases
Sigiriya village
The site’s ticket office stands on the west side of the rock (OpenStreetMap). On foot, the planner makes it 1.2 km from the village centre, 1.6 km from the bus stop on Sigiriya Road and 2.1 km from the guest houses south-east of the rock. The Pidurangala climb starts 2 km beyond the office (OpenStreetMap). The climb itself is roughly 1,200 steps, which the Central Cultural Fund reckons take 1.5 to 2 hours (CCF).
Sigiriya has no railway station; the nearest is Habarana’s, 18 km away. In 2024 local buses to Dambulla ran every half hour from 6.30am, with the last at 6pm (Wikivoyage). When we looked on 24 October 2026, OpenStreetMap showed five ATMs within 1 km of the ticket office (OpenStreetMap).
Habarana
Habarana is a small city on the main road from Colombo to Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa. According to Wikipedia, its hotels run from mid-range upwards and are aimed at package tourists, and it is where Minneriya safaris start (Wikipedia). The Hurulu Eco Park entrance is 3 km up the road, and Kaudulla’s gate is 21 km away.
The railway station is on the Batticaloa line. OpenStreetMap’s walking route from the town centre is 2.2 km, while the rail site Seat 61 puts it 3.5 km out of town (Seat 61). The map shows bus stops along the main road but no bus station. It does show six ATMs within 700 metres of the town centre (OpenStreetMap).
Wild elephants on the Dambulla to Habarana road have made the news. In July 2023 the Daily Mirror reported a herd blocking traffic day and night between Inamaluwa and Digampathana Junction, and residents said drivers and travellers fed it to get past (Daily Mirror). In January 2024 the paper reported an elephant attacking a family’s car on the same highway in the early hours (Daily Mirror). In August 2025 The Morning reported that a container truck had killed a calf crossing that road near Hiriwadunna (The Morning).
In August 2026 the Sunday Times quoted a Department of Wildlife Conservation official: many road accidents involving wild elephants happen because of careless and extremely fast driving. A veterinarian in the same report raised concerns about road accidents where elephants roam, naming Habarana and Minneriya among other places (Sunday Times).
Dambulla
Dambulla sits at a major junction, 72 km north of Kandy (Wikipedia). Its bus station is on the Kandy road, with services to Colombo, Kandy, Anuradhapura and Sigiriya; Wikivoyage gives 2 to 3 hours from Kandy or Anuradhapura (Wikivoyage). The cave temple is a 2.3 km walk south of the bus station.
On 24 October 2026 OpenStreetMap showed a dozen banks within 1 km of the bus station, but no railway station in the town (OpenStreetMap). Wikivoyage’s Dambulla page lists simple guest houses and more upmarket resorts, some near the temple, about 1 km south of the centre (Wikivoyage).
Kandalama, Giritale and the two old capitals
Kandalama
Kandalama is a village where the Matale hills give way to the dry plains (Wikipedia). Its reservoir measures 4.8 km by 2.3 km and is a popular tourist spot (Wikipedia). Sigiriya is 25 to 35 minutes away by road (OpenStreetMap). We found no ATM mapped near the village on 24 October 2026, so draw cash in Dambulla.
Giritale
Giritale sits beside its own tank on the road to Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa, with some mid-range and upmarket hotels. Wikipedia notes that it shares a sanctuary with Minneriya (Wikipedia). The Polonnaruwa ruins are 15 to 25 minutes away, and the Minneriya and Kaudulla gates 25 to 35.
Polonnaruwa
Wikivoyage rates a bicycle as the best way round the ruins, finds plenty of budget hotels and guest houses in the new town, and puts the station 5 km out (Wikivoyage). As a base for everything it is far out: Anuradhapura is 2.5 to 3 hours away. Our Polonnaruwa guide gives the order to see the ruins in.
Anuradhapura
Wikivoyage finds numerous guest houses in Anuradhapura’s new town, and the city is on the Northern line (Wikivoyage). The station is a 2 km walk from the Sri Maha Bodhi (OpenStreetMap). Our Anuradhapura guide covers the sites.
Guest houses, lake lodges or hotels: kinds of place
Each base leans towards one kind of place. To show it, we counted the places that mappers have tagged as a hotel, motel, guest house or hostel on OpenStreetMap. Each count covers 2 km around one point, named in the table, in map data downloaded on 25 October 2026. A tag says how a volunteer labelled a place, not its size, price or standard. The map changes daily and misses some places, so read the counts as a rough pattern, not a census or a ranking.
| Base (2 km around this point) | Tagged hotel or motel | Tagged guest house or hostel |
|---|---|---|
| Anuradhapura (Sri Maha Bodhi) | 6 | 16 |
| Dambulla (bus station) | 18 | 20 |
| Giritale (town centre) | 5 | 2 |
| Habarana (town centre) | 16 | 5 |
| Kandalama (village) | 2 | 0 |
| Polonnaruwa (town centre) | 14 | 8 |
| Sigiriya (site ticket office) | 31 | 83 |
On the map, guest houses and hostels outnumber hotels around Sigiriya and Anuradhapura. Wikivoyage also finds plenty of them in the new towns of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. Hotels help with the parks too: a Wikivoyage listing from August 2024 says most around Sigiriya can book a morning or evening jeep safari (Wikivoyage).
For a lake or jungle setting, look at the tanks. Wikipedia places a hotel by the Kandalama reservoir, beside an archaeological forest (Wikipedia). Wikivoyage files Dambulla’s two Kandalama listings under “Splurge” (Wikivoyage).
In Habarana and Giritale, hotels outnumber guest houses on the map, and Wikipedia describes the hotels in both Habarana and Giritale as mid-range and up. Before you book anywhere, drop its pin into the planner and check the drive to the gate or rock you care about.
How many nights, and one base or two
Our Cultural Triangle guide sets out 2, 3 and 5 day plans. For the base, three rules of thumb cover most trips.
Two or three nights fit one central base. Sigiriya, the caves, Polonnaruwa and a park all lie within 2 hours of Sigiriya village or Habarana, as the first table shows.
Add Anuradhapura and a split saves driving. A day trip there from Sigiriya means the 2 to 2.5 hour road twice, out and back. Sleep in Anuradhapura on the first night instead, and you drive it once, on to Sigiriya the next day. Before our rounding, the planner puts the airport to Sigiriya plus the day trip there and back at just over 6 hours. The airport to Anuradhapura, then on to Sigiriya, comes to just under 5 hours (OpenStreetMap). That is about an hour less in the car. The saving is smaller than one leg because, unrounded, the airport run to Anuradhapura is half an hour longer.
Leave from the southern edge. Dambulla is 2 to 2.5 hours from Kandy, against 2.5 to 3 from Sigiriya or Habarana (OpenStreetMap). Kandy in one day plans the next stop. To fit the Triangle into the whole holiday, see how many days in Sri Lanka.

Getting there and getting around
Our airport transfers page, read on 24 October 2026, allows 3 hours 45 minutes for Sigiriya, Dambulla, Habarana and Kandalama, and 3 hours 30 minutes for Anuradhapura. Those fit our ranges everywhere except Dambulla, which the planner puts a little closer, at 3 to 3.5 hours.
Buses meet at Dambulla. Wikivoyage’s Sigiriya page lists air-conditioned buses from Kandy to Dambulla taking 2 to 3 hours. Private air-conditioned buses from Colombo take 3.5 to 4 hours on the toll roads (Wikivoyage). Lonely Planet notes that the Polonnaruwa buses to Dambulla, Kandy and Anuradhapura all go past the Minneriya entrance (Lonely Planet).
For short hops such as Dambulla to Sigiriya, a tuk-tuk cost about Rs 2,000 in 2024, as did one from Habarana station (Wikivoyage). In Anuradhapura, Wikivoyage names PickMe as the ride-hailing app (Wikivoyage).
Trains reach Habarana and Polonnaruwa on the Batticaloa line (Wikipedia) and Anuradhapura on the Northern line, but none of the other bases. On Seat 61, a rail site whose page was last updated on 10 June 2026, the Colombo to Batticaloa and Trincomalee trains were marked as running. The same page warned that some routes still lacked full service after the 2025 cyclone damage (Seat 61), so check Sri Lanka Railways first.

With a car and driver, you can stay by a reservoir and still reach the rock by 7am.
When to go: dry months, heat and the elephants
Anuradhapura and Maha Illuppallama are the two nearby stations with 1991 to 2020 climate normals from the World Meteorological Organization. At both, June, July and August each bring between 15 and 43 mm, falling on two to five days. The heaviest months are October, November and December: between 209 and 281 mm, spread over 12 to 17 days (WMO climate normals).
It is hot most of the year. From March to October the daily high reaches 30°C on 27 to 31 days a month at both stations. Average highs peak at about 34 to 35°C in March and April (WMO climate normals). That is the case for a base you can leave at dawn.
Love Sri Lanka gives July to October for the elephant gathering, with August and September as the best months (Love Sri Lanka). The Wildlife Department’s 2026 magazine quotes a former head of the department: the gathering no longer happens as it once did, because the tank is now nearly full by September (DWC). Treat it as a chance; our Minneriya safari guide compares the parks and the best time of day.
Questions about where to stay in the Cultural Triangle
Which town should I stay in when visiting the Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle?
One of three: Sigiriya village, Habarana or Dambulla. Each is within 40 minutes of the Sigiriya rock and the Dambulla caves by road, as the drive-time tables show (OpenStreetMap). Add a night in Anuradhapura if its sacred city is on your list.
Sigiriya, Dambulla or Habarana: which is better?
It depends on the trip. Sigiriya village suits an early climb, and Dambulla suits bus travel. Habarana suits safaris, with the Minneriya gate a 15 to 25 minute drive away.
What is the best base for Sigiriya?
On distance alone, Sigiriya village itself. The ticket office is a 1.2 km walk from the village centre and opens at 7am (CCF), and the Pidurangala climb starts 2 km beyond it.
What can I do in Sigiriya with two or three nights?
Climb the rock early, then add sights such as Pidurangala, the Dambulla caves and an afternoon safari. Our Sigiriya guide lists the rest, and the Dambulla cave temple guide covers the five caves.
Planning your Cultural Triangle base with us
We’re based in Weligama and plan private trips around Sri Lanka by car, each with a driver-guide. Send us your dates, the number of nights and what matters most to you: the rock, the ruins or the elephants. Through our contact page we’ll suggest a base and a driving order to match.
We checked the drive times, map counts, rail notes and site hours against the linked sources on 24 October 2026. Buses, trains and the elephant season shift over time, so look again before you book a room.
