Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle: Where to Stay and Itineraries

A planning guide to the Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle, with drive times between the bases, where to stay, 2026 ticket prices, the best months and 2, 3 and 5 day outlines.

Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle: Where to Stay and Itineraries

The Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle is the region between Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy, and it holds five of the island’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Wikipedia). We’d allow three full days for a first trip. Sleep in Sigiriya, Habarana or Dambulla, which lie within 25 km of each other, and Lion Rock, the Dambulla caves, Polonnaruwa and the elephants at Minneriya are all day trips. Anuradhapura is further out and deserves its own night. Kandy, the southern corner, works best as a separate stop on the way to the hills.

Key takeaways

  • The five World Heritage Sites are Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya (listed in 1982), Kandy (1988) and the Dambulla cave temple (1991).
  • Habarana has the shortest drives overall, Sigiriya is beside Lion Rock, and Dambulla is nearest to Kandy and the airport.
  • On 2 October 2026 a foreign adult paid USD 35 for Sigiriya, and USD 30 apiece for Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura (CCF price list). Dambulla, Pidurangala, Kandy’s temple and safaris cost extra.
  • June to August are the driest months at the two nearest weather stations, and October to December are the wettest.

What is the Cultural Triangle?

UNESCO describes Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle as an area in the centre of the island that includes five World Heritage Sites (UNESCO). Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya joined the list in 1982, Kandy in 1988 and the Dambulla cave temple in 1991 (Wikipedia).

For a Cultural Triangle Sri Lanka map, open the one on Wikipedia. It draws the corners at Anuradhapura in the north, Polonnaruwa in the east and Kandy in the south, with Sigiriya and Dambulla inside.

From 1980 to 1997 the Central Cultural Fund ran the UNESCO-Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle Programme (Central Cultural Fund), and it still issues the tickets for Sigiriya, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa (CCF e-tickets). Seven of the ten entries on our list of Sri Lanka’s historical sites are in or beside the triangle.

Cultural Triangle map in words: distances and drive times

Sigiriya, Dambulla and Habarana form a small inner triangle, 17 to 24 km apart. Polonnaruwa lies about 55 km east of Sigiriya, Anuradhapura about 75 km north-west and Kandy about 90 km south. The airport is about 150 km from Sigiriya (OpenStreetMap).

Read down a column to see one base. We ran every route through OpenStreetMap’s planner on 2 October 2026, and each cell links to it. Because the planner assumes clear roads, we’ve rounded the times up to a usual range. The Kandy row and most of the airport row carry half an hour more, to match our Kandy guide and airport transfers page.

The main sites, and where to read more

Anuradhapura and Mihintale

For 1,300 years Anuradhapura was a seat of kings and monks. It grew up around a cutting taken from the Buddha’s tree of enlightenment, and emptied after an invasion in 993 (UNESCO). Most visitors are Sri Lankan pilgrims in white, and the old city is large enough that Wikivoyage suggests a tuk-tuk to cover it in a day (Wikivoyage). To choose which stupas come first, use our Anuradhapura guide. Mihintale, the hill where tradition places the arrival of Buddhism on the island (Wikipedia), is about 18 km east by road (OpenStreetMap).

Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa took over as capital once Anuradhapura was destroyed, and its ruins include the garden-city that Parakramabahu I laid out in the 12th century (UNESCO). Its monuments sit close together on flat ground, and Wikivoyage calls a bicycle the best way round, with bikes for hire at most guest houses (Wikivoyage). Buy your ticket at the museum, then follow the order in our Polonnaruwa guide.

Sigiriya

Kassapa I, who reigned from 477 to 495, made his capital on a granite peak some 180 metres tall (UNESCO). Reaching the top means roughly 1,200 steps, and the site’s managers suggest 1.5 to 2 hours for the way up (Central Cultural Fund). Our post on what to do in Sigiriya adds Pidurangala, the museum and the day trips nearby.

Dambulla cave temple

Pilgrims have come to Dambulla’s cave monastery for 22 centuries. Its five sanctuaries hold 157 statues and about 2,100 square metres of murals (UNESCO). It’s the big site nearest to Kandy, which makes it an easy first or last stop. The Dambulla cave temple guide on this site goes through the five caves in turn.

Minneriya and the elephants

In the dry season, from July to October, elephants gather on the grass around the Minneriya reservoir, and August and September are the best months to see them. Go in the afternoon: Love Sri Lanka’s advice is a drive from 3pm to 6pm (Love Sri Lanka). The park gate is on the Habarana to Polonnaruwa road (OpenStreetMap), so a safari fits the end of a Polonnaruwa day. Jeeps and neighbouring Kaudulla are covered in our Minneriya safari guide.

Kandy

The Sinhala kings kept their last capital at Kandy until the British occupation of 1815, and pilgrims still come for the Temple of the Tooth Relic (UNESCO). As a hill city 2 to 3 hours from the central bases, it’s worth a night of its own. Kandy in one day has a timed plan.

Where to stay in the Cultural Triangle

Where to stay when visiting the Cultural Triangle comes down to the drive times above. Three places are central enough to be your only base.

Sigiriya village

Sigiriya village sits beside Lion Rock and Pidurangala, so a 7am climb is easy. From here the Dambulla caves and the Minneriya gate are each 30 to 40 minutes away. The drawback is transport: there’s no railway station, and Wikivoyage’s 2024 note has the last bus to Dambulla leaving at 6pm (Wikivoyage).

Habarana

Habarana has the shortest drives to the sights overall: 15 to 25 minutes to the Minneriya gate, 25 to 35 to Sigiriya and 50 to 65 to Polonnaruwa. The main road from Colombo to Trincomalee and Polonnaruwa runs through it, and Wikipedia describes its hotels as mid-range and above, aimed at package tourists (Wikipedia). It also has the nearest railway station to Sigiriya (Wikivoyage).

Dambulla

Dambulla is the closest base to both Kandy and the airport, and the cave temple is on the edge of town. Buses from Colombo, Kandy, Anuradhapura and Sigiriya arrive at its bus station (Wikivoyage), so it suits anyone travelling without a car. We’d choose it for convenience over scenery.

Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is 1.5 to 2.5 hours from the three central bases (OpenStreetMap), so a day trip means three to five hours in the car. Give it a night, ideally at the start of a trip from the airport.

Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa is the eastern corner, 2.5 to 3 hours from Anuradhapura and 3.5 to 4 from Kandy, so it’s a poor base for the whole triangle. A night here suits cyclists who want the ruins early, and anyone heading on east along the Batticaloa railway line (Wikivoyage).

Tickets and costs in 2026

The Central Cultural Fund prices its tickets in US dollars and takes payment in rupees at the day’s rate (CCF tickets). Its list was dated 24 September 2026, at LKR 334 to the dollar, and hadn’t changed by 2 October (CCF price list).

Together the three big sites come to USD 95 for an adult. Children aged 6 to 12 pay USD 20 at Sigiriya and USD 15 at the other two (CCF price list). Counters open from 7am to 5pm. Orders placed online last 90 days, admit you once on the day you visit and are non-refundable (CCF e-tickets).

Sources disagree about a combined ticket. Wikivoyage’s Polonnaruwa page, beside a 2018 price, says the old USD 50 round ticket is no longer sold (Wikivoyage). The fund’s ticket page describes a round ticket for the three sites, valid for two months (CCF tickets), yet we found none on its price list on 2 October 2026. Budget for three single tickets and ask at the first counter.

Safaris aren’t on the fund’s list either: most hotels can book a jeep (Wikivoyage).

How many days: 2, 3 and 5 day itineraries

The 2 and 3 day outlines count full days after the drive in. The 5 day one starts at the airport.

PlanSleepDay by day
2 daysSigiriya or HabaranaDay 1: Sigiriya when the counter opens at 7am (CCF), then the Dambulla caves late in the afternoon. Day 2: Polonnaruwa by bike, then a jeep drive at Minneriya from 3pm on the way back.
3 daysSigiriya, Habarana or DambullaDay 1: the Dambulla caves and an easy afternoon. Day 2: Sigiriya, its museum and Pidurangala, which is about 1 km to the north (Wikipedia). Day 3: Polonnaruwa and the afternoon safari.
5 daysAnuradhapura, then a central baseDay 1: airport to Anuradhapura, 3.5 to 4 hours (OpenStreetMap). Day 2: Anuradhapura and Mihintale, then 1.5 to 2 hours to Habarana. Day 3: Sigiriya and Pidurangala. Day 4: Polonnaruwa and a safari. Day 5: the Dambulla caves, then 2 to 2.5 hours on to Kandy.

Two days is the least we’d suggest, and it leaves out Anuradhapura.

Best time to visit

Climate normals for 1991 to 2020 from the World Meteorological Organization cover two stations here: Anuradhapura and Maha Illuppallama, the nearest one to Sigiriya. June, July and August are the driest months at both, averaging 15 to 43 mm of rain a month on fewer than five days. October, November and December are the wettest, with 209 to 281 mm a month and rain on 12 to 17 days (WMO climate normals).

February and March come next, at 60 to 82 mm a month. Average highs climb from about 30°C in January to 34 or 35°C in March and April, and April brings about 180 mm of rain (WMO climate normals). The popular “December to April” advice is only half right at these two stations: December and April are both wet.

We’d pick June to August, or February. Anuradhapura’s temples get crowded on poya days and at weekends (Love Sri Lanka).

Getting there and around in 2026

By road, Dambulla is the gateway: usually 3 to 3.5 hours from the airport and 2 to 2.5 from Kandy. Our airport transfers page allows 3 hours 45 minutes for the Sigiriya and Dambulla area. From our base in Weligama, Sigiriya is about 290 km away, and 4.5 hours even on clear roads (OpenStreetMap), so allow a full travel day.

Cyclone Ditwah left 70% of Sri Lanka’s railway network damaged in November and December 2025 (Wikivoyage). Anuradhapura is on the Northern line (Wikivoyage). On 9 April 2026 the Department of Railways said trains on that line were resuming between Colombo Fort and Kankesanturai (Newsfirst). The rail site Seat 61, on a page last updated on 10 June 2026, listed the Colombo to Batticaloa trains, which call at Habarana and Polonnaruwa, as running (Seat 61).

Towards Kandy, an Ada Derana report of 2 October 2026 said services had resumed from Colombo Fort as far as Peradeniya and Gampola. The morning’s first train was a trial without passengers (Ada Derana), with the regular timetable due from the afternoon. Peradeniya to Kandy, the last stretch, stayed suspended while a bridge was still under repair (Colombo Times). Check Sri Lanka Railways before you plan around any train.

In 2024 the Sigiriya bus left Dambulla every 30 minutes. Wikivoyage says no bus runs direct from Polonnaruwa, so you change at Inamaluwa junction (Wikivoyage).

Before you fly, apply for the ETA. When we looked on 2 October 2026, citizens of 40 countries paid nothing for a 30-day tourist ETA (official ETA site).

Dress and conduct at sacred sites

The ruins are places of worship as well as archaeology. GOV.UK’s advice for Buddhist temples is covered legs and shoulders, with shoes and hats off. It also says not to pose for photographs in front of a Buddha statue, and that disrespecting Buddhist images is a serious offence that can lead to arrest (GOV.UK).

The Temple of the Tooth turns away visitors in shorts or sleeveless tops, and has appropriate clothing available at its entrances (Sri Dalada Maligawa). At its sites the Central Cultural Fund bans filming, drones included, without written approval (CCF e-tickets). A sarong or scarf and slip-on shoes cover most situations.

Questions about the Cultural Triangle

Where’s the best place to stay when visiting Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle?

Sigiriya, Habarana or Dambulla. Habarana has the shortest drives overall, and it’s only 15 to 25 minutes from the Minneriya gate (OpenStreetMap). Sigiriya puts you beside Lion Rock, and Dambulla is nearest to Kandy and the airport.

How long should you spend in the Cultural Triangle?

Three full days cover Sigiriya, the Dambulla caves, Polonnaruwa and a safari from one base. Allow five to include Anuradhapura, which the airport run reaches in 3.5 to 4 hours (OpenStreetMap), and to finish in Kandy.

Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa: which should you choose?

With a central base and little time, choose Polonnaruwa: it’s 75 to 105 minutes from Sigiriya (OpenStreetMap) and compact enough to cycle. Anuradhapura is 2 to 2.5 hours from Sigiriya (OpenStreetMap), and it’s a larger site that pilgrims still use.

Cultural Triangle tours with a driver-guide

Every route on our Sri Lanka tours page is private, with your own vehicle and a driver-guide. Several of the multi-day routes pass through Sigiriya, Dambulla or Anuradhapura, and most include entry tickets for the sites they visit.

For a car and driver alone, our private car with driver page sets out what’s covered: the driver, fuel, tolls and parking, including at Dambulla, Sigiriya and the Temple of the Tooth. Hotels, meals and entrance tickets are yours to pay. So are safari jeeps, which we arrange, and any local site guide you take on.

Send us your dates and the sites you care about most, and we’ll plan the bases and the driving order around them.

We rechecked ticket prices and terms, the rail reports, the ETA notice and the OpenStreetMap routes on 2 October 2026. Prices move with the exchange rate and rail services were still changing that week, so look again before you travel.
