How Many Days in Sri Lanka? Trip Lengths From 5 to 21 Days

How many days to spend in Sri Lanka, length by length: which regions fit into 5, 7, 9, 10, 14 and 21 days, the hours each trip spends in the car, how the season moves the plan, and what the ETA allows.

How Many Days in Sri Lanka? Trip Lengths From 5 to 21 Days

How many days in Sri Lanka you need depends on how many regions you want, because most moves between them take 2 to 5 hours by road. Five days fit three bases: the south coast, Ella and Kandy (5-day route). Seven make one quick loop of Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and the coast (7-day route). Nine or ten add a slower Cultural Triangle or a safari night (9 days, 10 days). Fourteen add Anuradhapura, Nuwara Eliya and a park (2 weeks), and 21 add the north (3 weeks). The month then decides which coast you end on.

Key takeaways

  • Seven to ten days is enough for a first loop of the Triangle, Kandy, Ella and the south coast, with 16 to 21 hours of driving on our routes.
  • Extra days mostly buy time out of the car: our 14-day south-west route drives only 2.5 to 3.5 hours more than our 7-day one.
  • As far as we could find on 24 October 2026, no train ran between Kandy and Ella, so plan the hills by road.
  • With one week between May and September, favour the Triangle: its weather station averages 21 mm of rain in July, the hills 155 mm.
  • The free ETA for 40 nationalities, the UK, US and Australia among them, gives 30 days, longer than any route here.

How many days in Sri Lanka: every trip length compared

Each row is one of our published routes, its road legs timed on OpenStreetMap’s route planner and added up. We recounted every total on 24 October 2026.

TripRegions that fitHours in the carOur route
5 days, 4 nightsSouth coast, Ella, Kandy12.5 to 15.55-day itinerary
7 days, 6 nightsSigiriya, Kandy, Ella, south coast17 to 20.57-day itinerary
9 days, 8 nightsTriangle (3 nights), Kandy, Ella, south coast16 to 19.59-day itinerary
10 days, 9 nightsSigiriya, Kandy, Ella, a night by Yala, south coast16.5 to 2110-day itinerary
14 days, 13 nightsAnuradhapura, Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, a park, one coast19.5 to 24 (south-west) or 22 to 28.5 (east)2-week itinerary
21 days, 20 nightsThe north, Trincomalee, the Triangle, the hills, a park, the south coast29.5 to 35.53-week itinerary

Why does the nine-day route spend no longer driving between bases than the seven-day one? It has one leg fewer and gives the Triangle a third night instead. The second week of the 14-day route adds seven nights but only a few hours of driving. Below a week, cutting nights means cutting regions: the 5-day route leaves out the Triangle.

How long other visitors stay

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority puts the average stay of foreign tourists in 2025 at 8.29 nights (SLTDA Year in Review 2025). Its monthly figures by country show visitors from the UK staying 8.3 to 10.3 nights and those from Germany 11.2 to 13.0. Australians stayed 8.0 to 9.4 nights, Americans 7.1 to 8.3.

Road time is the real limit

Wikivoyage notes that away from the better main roads many are narrow and bumpy, above all inland, and shared with bikes, walkers and animals (Wikivoyage). These are the five legs of the classic loop. We ran each through the route planner on 24 October 2026; its times assume empty roads, so ours start above them.

LegDistanceUsual drive
Airport to Sigiriya144 km3.5 to 4 hours
Sigiriya to Kandy88 km2.5 to 3 hours
Kandy to Ella134 km4 to 5 hours
Ella to Weligama176 km3.5 to 4.5 hours
Weligama to the airport170 km2.5 to 3 hours

Together the five legs come to about 710 km and 16 to 19.5 hours over five driving days, against 12 hours 11 minutes on the planner’s empty roads. In our view a day with a four-hour drive leaves room for one sight, so count each change of base as half a day gone.

Can the train cut that? Not in October 2026. Cyclone Ditwah broke the hill line, and Colombo trains came back to Peradeniya and Gampola only in early October 2026 (Sunday Times). They still stopped short of Kandy because the Peradeniya bridge was unfinished. Repairs also continued on two higher sections, Gampola to Nawalapitiya and Hatton to Nanu Oya (Colombo Times). Further up, the Nanu Oya to Badulla stretch through Ella has had trains again since 20 June 2026 (Sunday Times). As for Kandy itself, Sri Lanka Railways said on 1 October that plans were in hand to run Colombo to Kandy trains again in January (News 1st). We found no report of a through train from Kandy to Ella by 24 October 2026. Plan that day by road, and treat a ride from Nanu Oya as an extra if seats appear.

How many nights each region needs

The Cultural Triangle: two or three nights

Two nights cover Sigiriya and the Dambulla caves; our 9-day route adds a third for Polonnaruwa and a jeep drive. The Central Cultural Fund says the climb up Sigiriya takes 1.5 to 2 hours over about 1,200 steps (CCF), and its ticket counters open from 7am to 5pm (CCF tickets). From July to October elephants gather at Minneriya; Love Sri Lanka’s pick is August or September, with the afternoon, 3pm to 6pm, as the time to go (Love Sri Lanka). If you can’t decide between Sigiriya, Dambulla and Habarana as a base, our guide to where to stay in the Cultural Triangle compares them.

Kandy: one night, or two

One night fits the Temple of the Tooth’s evening ritual, which runs 6.30pm to 8pm (Sri Dalada Maligawa). Our 2-week route gives Kandy two nights, with one day free of driving.

The hills and Ella: two or three nights

Two nights in Ella give you one whole day on foot. Wikivoyage’s Ella page calls the Little Adam’s Peak hike relatively easy, and it times the walk from the centre to the Nine Arch Bridge at 45 minutes (Wikivoyage). A third hill night, in Nuwara Eliya, splits the Kandy to Ella drive into 2.5 to 3 hours and 2 to 3 hours. It also leaves time for a tea estate on the way, and our guide to which tea factory to visit compares the visits.

A safari park: one night

Love Sri Lanka lists Udawalawe as open from 6am to 6pm and says a safari is best started early in the morning or late in the day (Love Sri Lanka). A night beside the park puts you at the gate when it opens. For Yala, Wikivoyage says hotels and guest houses in Tissamaharama sell the jeep tours, most leaving at 5am or 2.30pm (Wikivoyage). Citing dry weather, the wildlife and forest departments closed Yala’s Blocks 1 and 2 on 14 September 2026 (Ada Derana), with a reopening announced for 16 October (Ada Derana). We could not find any report by 24 October 2026 that the blocks had actually reopened, so check before you book.

The south or east coast: one to four nights

Our routes give the coast one night on the shortest trips and four on the longest, at Weligama on the 3-week route. On the south coast, the Portuguese founded Galle as a fortified town in the 16th century, UNESCO says (UNESCO). Love Sri Lanka puts the whale-watching season at November to April (Love Sri Lanka). The east coast is the one for May to September, as the season section below shows. Wikivoyage puts Arugam Bay’s surf season at April to October and says most places to stay and eat there close for the months from November to March (Wikivoyage). It is also 6 to 7 hours from the airport (OpenStreetMap).

The season changes the plan

The Department of Meteorology’s year has four seasons. Its calendar has two monsoons: south-west, May to September, and north-east, December to February. Between them sit two inter-monsoon spells, in March and April and again in October and November (Department of Meteorology). The World Meteorological Organization’s 30-year station averages, 1991 to 2020, show what that means for one region in each corner of the loop (WMO climate normals). A rain day has at least 1 mm, and Maha Illuppallama is about 38 km from Sigiriya in a straight line.

Weather stationDecemberJuly
Galle (south coast)176 mm, 11.2 rain days173 mm, 15.1 rain days
Trincomalee (east coast)339 mm, 15.0 rain days51 mm, 3.4 rain days
Maha Illuppallama (Triangle)209 mm, 12.5 rain days21 mm, 3.0 rain days
Nuwara Eliya (hills)183 mm, 14.9 rain days155 mm, 16.0 rain days

A week in December and a week in July are different trips. In December the south coast is the drier finish, though Galle gets far less rain still from January to March: 71 to 90 mm a month (WMO, Galle). In July the dry side is the Triangle and the east. For the south-west monsoon months, Sri Lanka Tourism’s weather page sends visitors to the dry zone, listing Trincomalee, Arugam Bay and Jaffna as places to go then (Sri Lanka Tourism). Our Sri Lanka weather by month table has every month at more stations. The figures are 30-year averages, and any single week can turn out wetter or drier.

One week: the Cultural Triangle or the hill country?

You can see both in a week, quickly. Our 7-day loop gives the Triangle two nights and the hills three, Kandy included, and spends 17 to 20.5 hours driving (7-day itinerary). If you’d rather drive less, pick one by the month.

From May to September, pick the Triangle. Maha Illuppallama averages 21 mm in July, while Nuwara Eliya averages 155 mm on 16 rain days (table above). For those months the 7-day page swaps in a Sigiriya, Trincomalee and Kandy week that totals 12.5 to 15.5 hours in the car. July to October is also the Minneriya elephant season (Love Sri Lanka).

From December to March the rain doesn’t settle it. In February, Maha Illuppallama averages 82 mm and Nuwara Eliya 73 mm (WMO climate normals). So choose by what you came for: for example, the rock, the ruins and the elephants, or tea country, hill walks and a beach finish. For the second, the same page’s slower week takes two nights each in Kandy, Ella and Unawatuna, and its drives add up to 13.5 to 17 hours.

Families and slower trips: fewer bases

A slower trip cuts the number of moves. Each base you drop saves a day of packing and usually some driving. The 7-day page’s three-base week drives 13.5 to 17 hours, against 17 to 20.5 for its four-base loop. For instance:

  • Five days from one base: the 5-day page’s four-night south coast option keeps the two airport drives to 5 to 6 hours together, not counting day trips.
  • A week from three bases: two nights each in Kandy, Ella and the south coast, as above.

For ten days or more, adding nights to the bases you already have keeps the driving close to a week’s. A split night helps most on the longest legs, Kandy to Ella and Ella to the coast. On the official ETA site, children under 12 of any nationality get the tourist ETA without charge for stays of up to 30 days (ETA fees).

Entry rules: how long the ETA lets you stay

Every foreign visitor needs an Electronic Travel Authorization before arrival, the official ETA site says (ETA). Nationals of 40 countries have paid nothing for it since 25 May 2026, and the list takes in the UK, the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. It gives 30 days, and you may enter twice within those 30 days (ETA). Most other nationalities get the same 30-day, double-entry tourist ETA for a fee (ETA fees).

So even our 3-week route fits easily. To stay longer, you apply to the Department of Immigration and Emigration for an extension. The site describes extensions of 60 days, then 90 and 90 again, up to 270 days from arrival (ETA extensions). We read these pages on 24 October 2026; check them again before you apply.

Questions about how long to spend in Sri Lanka

Is a week enough for Sri Lanka?

For one loop, yes: the Triangle, Kandy, Ella and one coastal night, which our 7-day route covers in 17 to 20.5 hours at the wheel. A safari night, Nuwara Eliya and Anuradhapura need a longer trip.

Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka?

Yes for a first visit. Our 10-day route adds a night beside Yala to the week’s loop and stretches the coast to three nights at Weligama. Its drives total 16.5 to 21 hours. The north and the east coast need longer.

Can 10 days include a quiet beach and some hiking or wildlife?

Yes. Keep two nights in Ella for walks and one beside a park for an early jeep drive, then end with three nights on the coast. Pick the coast by month: south from December to March, east from May to September.

Is 5 days enough for Sri Lanka?

For three bases at most. Our 5-day route spends a night on the south coast, two in Ella and the last in Kandy, and its four drives total 12.5 to 15.5 hours.
