A Sri Lanka itinerary 3 weeks long gives you 20 nights, enough to add the north to the usual loop. Our Sri Lanka itinerary for 21 days sleeps in nine places: Anuradhapura for three nights, with a jeep drive in Wilpattu, then Jaffna and Trincomalee for two each. After three nights at Sigiriya come Kandy (two), Nuwara Eliya (one), Ella (two) and Udawalawe (one). It ends with four nights at Weligama. That is about 1,305 km and 29.5 to 35.5 hours on the road. From May to September we’d run it the other way round and spend the long coast stay in the east.
Key takeaways
- Twenty nights, nine bases and ten road legs add up to 29.5 to 35.5 hours of driving.
- The longest leg is Jaffna to Trincomalee, which the route planner puts at 232 km and 4 hours 25 minutes on empty roads.
- February and March suit this version best. From May to September, a reversed loop with seven nights at Arugam Bay and Trincomalee fits the rain better.
- Neither version uses a train out of Kandy: on 21 October 2026 we found no service running the whole way to Ella.
- A foreign adult pays USD 25 per daytime entry at Wilpattu, Udawalawe, Yala and Pigeon Island in the tourist season, and USD 20 in the rest of the year.
Sri Lanka itinerary 21 days: the route at a glance
Three weeks here means 20 nights, arriving on day 1 and leaving on day 21. Every road leg went through OpenStreetMap’s route planner on 21 October 2026. The planner expects empty roads, so each range here begins above its figure. Where an Oura page already prints a range for the same leg, we used that one.
| Nights | Base | Getting there | Plans |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Anuradhapura | Airport to here: 3.5 to 4 hours, 181 km (route) | Sacred city, Mihintale, Wilpattu |
| 4 and 5 | Jaffna | Another 205 km: 4.5 to 5 hours (route) | Fort, temple, island ferry |
| 6 and 7 | Trincomalee | 5 to 6 hours, 232 km (route) | Beaches, temple, Pigeon Island |
| 8 to 10 | Sigiriya | 2.5 to 3 hours, 101 km (route) | The rock, cave temple, old city |
| 11 and 12 | Kandy | 2.5 to 3 hours, 88 km (route) | Temple of the Tooth |
| 13 | Nuwara Eliya | 2.5 to 3 hours, 73 km (route) | Tea estates, cool nights |
| 14 and 15 | Ella | 2 to 3 hours, 57 km (route) | Walks, Diyaluma Falls |
| 16 | Udawalawe | 2.5 to 3 hours, 92 km (route) | A jeep drive at dawn |
| 17 to 20 | Weligama | 2 to 2.5 hours, 108 km (route) | Galle Fort, the beach |
| Day 21 | Airport | 2.5 to 3 hours, 170 km (route) | Fly home |
Seven of the nine stops get two nights or more. In our view that pace suits slow travellers and people coming back for a second look. For a first visit in less time, our 2 week itinerary keeps the classic loop, and the Sri Lanka round trip page sets every length side by side.

The north: Anuradhapura, Wilpattu and Jaffna
Nights 1 to 3: Anuradhapura and a day in Wilpattu
UNESCO listed Anuradhapura as a World Heritage Site in 1982 (Wikipedia). A Central Cultural Fund ticket for it cost USD 30 on the price list updated on 14 October 2026 (CCF). Mihintale is 18 km east, about half an hour to 40 minutes by car (OpenStreetMap). Sri Lankans believe the monk Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa met there, and that the meeting marked the start of Buddhism on the island (Wikipedia).
Give the second full day to Wilpattu, which lies 30 km west of Anuradhapura and covers 1,317 square kilometres (Wikipedia). Wikivoyage says you can go in only in a guide’s jeep, usually arranged through your lodging in Anuradhapura, and that a 6am start is best (Wikivoyage).
The park is known for its leopards. A camera survey run in 2018 photographed 133 individuals, cubs included, across about 660 square kilometres (Wikipedia). It is a count, not a promise of a sighting. Love Sri Lanka gives February to October as the best months (Love Sri Lanka). Wikivoyage advises against going from December to February and in March, when rain washes out the trails (Wikivoyage). The two disagree on February and March, the months the main route uses, so ask about the tracks when you book the jeep.
Under the 2022 regulations, daytime visits run from 6am to 6pm (Gazette 2292/11). A Love Sri Lanka page last updated in May 2023 gives 4.30pm as the last entry and says only a quarter of the park is open (Love Sri Lanka).
Nights 4 and 5: Jaffna
The Portuguese built Jaffna Fort in 1618 (Wikipedia). The Hindu temple of Nallur Kandaswamy holds an annual festival spread over 25 days (Wikipedia).
Wikivoyage’s undated listing has a 15-minute ferry to the island of Nainativu, where a Hindu temple and a Buddhist one each have a jetty (Wikivoyage). The same page shows two views of when to come: December to March for cooler weather, or February to September for clear, dry heat (Wikivoyage). February and March fit both.
The east coast and the Cultural Triangle
Nights 6 and 7: Trincomalee
Jaffna to Trincomalee is the longest day (OpenStreetMap), so we’d allow 5 to 6 hours.
Love Sri Lanka describes a town built beside a natural harbour, with Koneswaram temple and the beaches at Uppuveli and Nilaveli (Love Sri Lanka). Pigeon Island, 1 km out from Nilaveli, was redesignated a national park in 2003 (Wikipedia). Love Sri Lanka rates May to September as its best months for snorkelling (Love Sri Lanka), so snorkellers may prefer the May to September version below.
Nights 8 to 10: Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa
Three nights give you one day each for the rock, the cave temple at Dambulla and the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Polonnaruwa is 56 km from Sigiriya, a drive of 75 to 105 minutes (OpenStreetMap).
Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Wikipedia). On the 14 October 2026 list its ticket was USD 35, and Polonnaruwa’s USD 30 (CCF). Both open from 7am to 5pm on the fund’s ticket page, and a ticket is good for one entry (CCF tickets). Our Cultural Triangle guide covers where to stay and how to split the sites.
Kandy and the hills
Nights 11 and 12: Kandy
The Temple of the Tooth stands in the royal palace complex of the old Kandyan kingdom and holds the tooth relic of the Buddha (Wikipedia).

Nights 13 to 15: Nuwara Eliya and Ella, by road or partly by train
On 21 October 2026 we could find no train running the whole way between Kandy and Ella, and no news of the gaps being repaired. In early October, Colombo trains came back to Peradeniya and Gampola, though not to Kandy itself: the Sunday Times said the Mahaweli bridge past Sarasavi Uyana station was not yet finished (Sunday Times). The Colombo Times reported on 2 October that work was continuing on two more sections: Gampola onwards to Nawalapitiya, and the Hatton end below Nanu Oya (Colombo Times).
So drive up to Nuwara Eliya, whose weather station records average lows of about 10 to 11°C in February and March (WMO climate normals), and pack a warm layer.
Trains went back on the line from Nanu Oya through Ella to Badulla on 20 June 2026 (Sunday Times). On 2 October, a Colombo Times report described them as operating normally (Colombo Times). You can ride it instead of the last drive, but online seats are hard to find. Our Kandy to Ella train guide reports that a search on 19 October 2026 found seats from Nanu Oya on only 8 of the next 30 days. Booking opens 30 days before travel, so treat the train as a bonus.
Diyaluma Falls, 220 m high and the second highest in Sri Lanka (Wikipedia), is 40 km away, about an hour to an hour and a half by car (OpenStreetMap).
A park night and the south coast
Night 16: Udawalawe
Love Sri Lanka lists opening hours of 6am to 6pm. For elephants it recommends the first hours after dawn or the late evening (Love Sri Lanka). Wikipedia says around 250 elephants are thought to stay in the park permanently (Wikipedia). February is outside Love Sri Lanka’s best season for the park, which starts in May or June and runs to October (Love Sri Lanka).

Yala is the other choice, where guest houses and hotels in nearby Tissamaharama sell the jeep tours (Wikivoyage). On 14 September 2026 the wildlife department closed Yala’s Blocks 1 and 2 because of dry weather (Ada Derana). A reopening on 16 October was then announced by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Newswire reported on 13 October (Newswire). A search on 21 October turned up no confirmation that the blocks had reopened, so ask before you book. Which park suits which month is set out in our Sri Lanka safari guide.
Nights 17 to 20: four nights on the south coast
Weligama puts Galle Fort within a 45 to 60 minute drive (OpenStreetMap). The Portuguese first built the fort in 1588, and the Dutch fortified it extensively from 1649 (Wikipedia).
For whales, Love Sri Lanka points to Mirissa, with a season of November to April, and adds that nothing can be guaranteed (Love Sri Lanka). For the bay itself, surf and swimming, see our Weligama beach guide.
GOV.UK’s Sri Lanka advice, last changed on 21 September 2026, was listed as current when we checked it on 21 October 2026, Sri Lanka time (GOV.UK). Its “Swimming safety” section (GOV.UK), which also sends readers on to the Royal Life Saving Society’s site, states: “Many beaches in Sri Lanka have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of the year. Get advice from your hotel or tour operator before going in the sea.”
When should you go, and what changes from May to September?
The Department of Meteorology’s climate newsletter of November 2025 lists four seasons. In it, the north-east monsoon runs from December until February, and March and April make up the first inter-monsoon. After them the south-west monsoon lasts from May to September, and the second inter-monsoon takes October and November (Department of Meteorology). From May to September the north and east stay fairly dry while the south-west coast is wet. Jaffna and Trincomalee get their heaviest rain from October to December, while further down the east coast, Pottuvil by Arugam Bay is wettest from November to January. The table gives the range of monthly averages at six stations (WMO climate normals).
| Station (mm a month) | Feb and Mar | May to Sep | Oct and Nov |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jaffna | 26 to 43 | 19 to 81 | 235 to 437 |
| Trincomalee | 55 to 96 | 26 to 113 | 216 to 376 |
| Anuradhapura | 60 to 62 | 15 to 94 | 259 to 281 |
| Nuwara Eliya | 72 to 73 | 132 to 172 | 226 to 247 |
| Galle | 71 to 90 | 162 to 316 | 283 to 345 |
| Pottuvil (Arugam Bay) | 61 to 137 | 14 to 52 | 135 to 308 |
February and March are the only months when the five main-route stations in the table all average under 100 mm. January is still wet in the east, with 152 mm at Trincomalee. In April, Anuradhapura reaches 180 mm and Galle 202 mm. October and November are wet everywhere: Jaffna averages 437 mm in November, its wettest month (WMO climate normals). If those are your months, our monsoon season guide explains who gets rain when.
Three weeks from May to September
For those months we’d turn the loop round, start in the hills and put the long coast stay in the east:
- Nights 1 and 2, Kandy: 2.5 to 3.5 hours (113 km) from the airport (OpenStreetMap).
- Night 3, Nuwara Eliya, then nights 4 and 5 in Ella: the same two legs as above, 2.5 to 3 and 2 to 3 hours.
- Nights 6 to 9, Arugam Bay: 3 to 3.5 hours (135 km) on from Ella (OpenStreetMap).
- Nights 10 to 12, Trincomalee: 5.5 to 6.5 hours (247 km) up the coast (OpenStreetMap).
- Nights 13 and 14, Jaffna: 5 to 6 hours (237 km) (OpenStreetMap).
- Nights 15 to 17, Anuradhapura, with Wilpattu: 4.5 to 5 hours (200 km) (OpenStreetMap).
- Nights 18 to 20, Sigiriya: 2 to 2.5 hours (78 km) (OpenStreetMap).
- Day 21, back to the airport: 3.5 to 4 hours (144 km) (OpenStreetMap).
That is 20 nights, about 1,280 km and 30.5 to 37 hours of driving. Wikivoyage counts April to October as Arugam Bay’s surf season, and says most hotels there shut from November to March (Wikivoyage). A shorter window, July to September, appears on Love Sri Lanka’s 2022 map of surf breaks (Love Sri Lanka). Our Arugam Bay guide goes month by month. Start between July and September and this version ends at Sigiriya during Minneriya’s elephant gathering. Love Sri Lanka’s page on it gives July to October and calls August and September the best months (Love Sri Lanka).
Two catches. Nuwara Eliya is wetter in these months, with 132 to 172 mm on 13 to 16 days a month. Trincomalee’s highs reach 35°C from May to August (WMO climate normals).
Tickets and fees you can check before you go
We leave out hotels, the car and jeep hire, which depend on your dates. The rest are for one adult visitor from abroad, as listed on 21 October 2026.
| Ticket or permit | Cost | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| ETA (entry permit) | No charge for 30 days on UK, US, Australian and 37 other listed passports since 25 May 2026; double entry; apply before you land | Official ETA site |
| Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa | USD 30 each | CCF |
| Sigiriya | USD 35 | CCF |
| Wilpattu, Udawalawe, Yala, Pigeon Island | USD 25 each daytime entry in tourist season, otherwise USD 20; plus USD 10 a jeep and taxes | Gazette 2292/11 |
The three Cultural Fund sites come to USD 95. Wilpattu and Udawalawe add USD 40 to 50, plus USD 10 a jeep in service fees, and taxes. A permit covers one entry, so each daytime visit is charged, not each day (Gazette 2292/11).
Questions about three weeks in Sri Lanka
Is 3 weeks enough for Sri Lanka?
For one loop of the island, yes. Our 20 nights cover nine bases, from Jaffna to Weligama, with 29.5 to 35.5 hours on the road. Arugam Bay doesn’t fit the February and March version: Wikivoyage says most of its hotels close from November to March (Wikivoyage).
What is the best month for a 3 week Sri Lanka itinerary?
For the route that ends on the south coast, February or March, when Jaffna, Trincomalee, Anuradhapura and Galle all average under 100 mm. For the reversed route, with its long coast stay in the east, May to September (WMO climate normals). We’d avoid October and November for either.
Is there still a Kandy to Ella train?
No through train was running when we checked on 21 October 2026. Since 20 June 2026, the section from Nanu Oya to Badulla, which includes Ella, has had trains again (Sunday Times). So drive to Nuwara Eliya and board at Nanu Oya if you find seats. Check Sri Lanka Railways before you travel.
Is Jaffna worth adding to three weeks in Sri Lanka?
We’d say it is, if you have been to the south before and want a different side of the island. It costs two driving days of 4.5 to 6 hours each, and two nights. Without it, give those nights to Ella or the coast.
Plan your three weeks with us
Our team works from Weligama. The private car with driver page explains the arrangement: one car and one driver from Bandaranaike arrivals until you check in to fly home. We plan the route with you before you travel and rework it during the trip. Tell us your dates and which version you’d like.
Fact check: on 21 October 2026 we re-ran every leg on the route planner and re-read the rail, park, ticket and entry sources. Climate averages are not a forecast, and closures and timetables change, so check the linked pages in the week you travel.
