This winter, direct flights to Sri Lanka leave from London Gatwick (British Airways), London Heathrow and Frankfurt (SriLankan Airlines) and Zurich (Edelweiss), all to Colombo. Flying out takes about 9 and a half to 11 and a half hours, depending on the route. British Airways and Edelweiss confirm their flights on their own timetables. The SriLankan details come from the Colombo airport schedule and route sites, because we could not read SriLankan’s timetable. We checked on 31 October 2026. Schedules change, so confirm with your airline before you pay.
Key takeaways
- British Airways began Gatwick to Colombo on 23 October 2026. It says the flight runs three times a week through the winter season, and its timetable shows none after 26 March 2027.
- Heathrow has the most flights: the Colombo airport schedule lists nine a week on SriLankan Airlines, and route sites list them as nonstop.
- No other airport in the UK or Ireland is on the Colombo arrivals schedule, and Frankfurt is the only German airport on it.
Nonstop routes from the UK and Europe, winter 2026/27
The British Airways and Edelweiss rows come from those airlines. The SriLankan rows come from the weekly arrivals schedule of Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport, not from SriLankan. Times are local.
| Airline and flight | From | How often, and arrival in Colombo | Season |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Airways BA2045 | London Gatwick | 3 a week. Leaves 16:40 Monday, Wednesday and Friday, lands 08:35 next day | Winter season. Last flight shown 26 March 2027. Source: BA |
| SriLankan Airlines UL504 and UL506 | London Heathrow | 9 a week. UL504 lands 12:35 daily. UL506 lands 04:30 Sunday (from 1 November) and Monday, except 23 November | No end date shown. Source: airport schedule |
| SriLankan Airlines UL501 | Frankfurt, on a flight that starts in Paris | 3 a week. Lands 05:45 Monday, Thursday and Saturday, except 2 and 12 November | No end date shown. Source: airport schedule |
| Edelweiss WK64 | Zurich | 3 a week to 8 January, then 2 a week. Lands 08:00 to 10:00 | Seasonal: listed 26 October to 14 May. Source: Edelweiss |
British Airways confirms the start in its winter schedule release: the first flight left Gatwick on 23 October and it will run “three times a week throughout the winter season”. The BA timetable gives the times and shows 0 stops. Its last direct flight is on 26 March 2027, with none in the April weeks we checked. The airport lists a Boeing 777-200 on the route.
Edelweiss publishes its full Zurich to Colombo timetable: 13 flights in November, 13 in December, 10 in January and 8 in February, then no flights from June 2027. It lists no stopover. In November and December it leaves on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. From 11 January it leaves on Monday and Friday, about two hours later.
We could not confirm SriLankan’s routes from the airline. Its timetable page loads, but its results page stopped us with a security check. Its UK fare page shows Heathrow to Colombo on sale, month by month, to March 2027, and its Frankfurt and Paris pages show fares to Colombo. Those pages show fares, not stops or frequency.
So the SriLankan frequencies in our table are the airport’s. The word “nonstop” for Heathrow rests on two things that are not the airline. The airport names no stop for these flights, and the route sites FlightConnections and FlightsFrom list them as nonstop. FlightConnections agrees on nine a week, while FlightsFrom gives both seven and nine. Please check the stops with SriLankan before you book.

Paris, Frankfurt and the word “direct”
A flight sold as “direct” can still stop, so look for “nonstop” or “0 stops” before you book. SriLankan’s Paris and Frankfurt flights show why.
This section is our reading of airport and route data, not a statement from SriLankan. The airport lists UL501 as one flight, “Paris Charles de Gaulle/Frankfurt”, under a column headed “From /VIA”. Read that way, the flight runs from Paris via Frankfurt to Colombo, so Frankfurt is nonstop on the way out and Paris is not. Going home, the airport shows Paris first and then Frankfurt, leaving Colombo at 03:50 on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, so Frankfurt passengers would stop in Paris.
Route data fits that reading. FlightConnections lists Frankfurt to Colombo and Colombo to Paris as nonstop three times a week, but Paris to Colombo only once a week. AeroRoutes reported this triangle route for summer 2024: Colombo, Paris, Frankfurt, Colombo. It then reported separate nonstop flights for July to September 2025, so the pattern can change.
The airport also shows separate flights on a few dates: UL564 from Paris and UL558 from Frankfurt on 2 and 12 November, and UL563 and UL557 leaving Colombo on 1 and 11 November. UL501 does not run on those dates. We could not see the routing on an airline page, so ask SriLankan for the stops on your date.
Aeroflot and charter flights
The Colombo schedule also shows Aeroflot SU288 from Moscow Sheremetyevo, landing at 10:30 on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Apart from Istanbul, covered below, it shows no other nonstop flight from Europe. The schedule covers Colombo only, charter programmes may not appear on it, and we found no airline page confirming any charter from the UK, Ireland or western Europe this winter.
One-stop flights: the Gulf and Istanbul
If you live far from these four airports, or the days do not fit, you will probably make one stop. These are the main hubs on the Colombo arrivals schedule when we checked on 31 October 2026.
| Hub | Airline | Flights to Colombo | Lands at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dubai | Emirates | 3 a day, one via Male | 08:20, 15:55, 18:25 |
| Doha | Qatar Airways | 4 a day | 01:55, 02:45, 08:45, 16:30 |
| Abu Dhabi | Etihad | 4 a day, 3 on Wednesday | 02:50, 08:10, 14:50, 20:15 |
| Istanbul | Turkish Airlines | Daily, plus 4 a week | 05:55, and 07:45 on some days |
Times shift on some days, Wednesday in particular for Emirates and Qatar Airways. SriLankan also flies from Dubai and Doha, and flydubai and Air Arabia (from Sharjah and Abu Dhabi) are on the same list. The BA timetable sells connections from Heathrow and Gatwick through Doha on Qatar Airways aircraft, so a BA number does not always mean a BA aircraft or a nonstop flight.
Check one more thing on a Gulf connection. The GOV.UK page for Sri Lanka warns of “airspace closures, delayed and cancelled flights” after escalation in the Middle East. It was last changed on 21 September and was still current when we read it on 31 October 2026. For the journey home, it says some Colombo to UK flights through hubs in the region can run late, be postponed or change route. British nationals are told to check with their airline and to consider other carriers or routes if needed.
How long is the flight to Sri Lanka from the UK?
About 10 and a half hours from Gatwick by BA’s own timetable, and about 12 hours coming back. Airlines list local times, so we worked out the airline figures below from the published times, using Sri Lanka at GMT+5:30.
| Route | Time | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Gatwick to Colombo | 10 h 25 min | BA timetable |
| Colombo to Gatwick | 11 h 55 min | BA timetable |
| Zurich to Colombo | 9 h 25 min to 10 h 05 min | Edelweiss timetable |
| Colombo to Zurich | 10 h 15 min to 11 h | Edelweiss timetable |
| Heathrow to Colombo | 10 h 25 min to 11 h 25 min | Route sites, not the airline |
| Frankfurt to Colombo | About 10 h 10 min | Route site, not the airline |
We could not get a Heathrow or Frankfurt time from SriLankan, so those are reports read on 31 October 2026. For Heathrow, FlightsFrom gives a range of 10 h 25 min to 11 h 25 min, and FlightConnections gives 10 h 45 min as the fastest. The Frankfurt figure is from FlightConnections. Timing depends on the path flown. In March 2026 the aviation minister said Europe flights avoiding the Middle East needed roughly an extra hour. The head of the civil aviation authority put the London increase at an hour and a half. Those are March reports, and we found no later notice from SriLankan, so we do not know whether they still apply.
A one-stop trip takes longer, by however long the connection is. Compare the total time on the booking page.
Arrival times and what to do on landing
Sri Lanka is five and a half hours ahead of the UK in winter and four and a half ahead of Zurich and Frankfurt. Every nonstop above lands between 04:30 and 12:35, so most of the first day is still ahead of you. After a 04:30 or 05:45 landing you will want your room and your ride from the airport arranged before you fly.

**Before you fly.** Apply for your ETA, the online permit tourists need before arrival. GOV.UK says ETAs are issued free for full British citizen passports, but you still have to apply.
**At the airport.** The airport’s guide sets out four steps: immigration, baggage, customs and the way out. It says non-Sri Lankans must fill in a disembarkation card and hand it over at the immigration counter. Its health page also lists a declaration form for all arriving passengers. Neither page is dated and GOV.UK’s entry page mentions neither form, so ask your airline what to complete.
**After customs.** Our airport taxi guide covers fares and apps, and our SIM card guide covers buying a local SIM or eSIM. If you land late or leave early, Negombo is close to the airport.
Going home: Colombo departure times
The airport’s departures schedule shows these flights. The BA and Edelweiss timetables show the same ones.
- British Airways BA2044 to Gatwick: 10:35 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, landing at 17:00.
- SriLankan UL503 to Heathrow: 12:55 daily. UL505 leaves at 02:25 on Saturday and Sunday, except 22 November.
- Edelweiss WK65 to Zurich: 09:30 on Tuesday and Thursday and 09:50 on Saturday until 9 January, then 11:25 on Tuesday and Saturday.
- SriLankan UL501, listed to Paris and then Frankfurt: 03:50 on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, except 1 and 11 November.
Three-a-week flights limit which trip lengths work, so choose the flights before the itinerary. Our guide to how many days in Sri Lanka can help you match the two.
When to book
We found no airline advice on how early to book, and nobody can promise a fare. Here is what we could read.
One fare tracker, whereandwhen.net, says that, in its archive of London fares, buying 2 to 3 months before departure gave the lowest average. That is one site’s statistic from past prices, read on 31 October 2026, and it does not separate nonstop flights. A December trip booked now is already later than that window, and a January trip is about inside it.
SriLankan’s fare page showed recent lowest economy returns from Heathrow of £728 for November, £934 for December, £787 for January and £774 for February. British Airways quotes return fares from £524 in its release, without saying for which dates. We read these on 31 October 2026. SriLankan warns that its displayed fares “may no longer be available at time of booking”.
If you are coming over Christmas, remember that outside Heathrow the nonstop choice is small: BA, Edelweiss and SriLankan’s Frankfurt flight each run about three times a week.
Questions about direct flights to Sri Lanka
Is there a direct flight from the UK to Sri Lanka?
Yes. British Airways flies nonstop from Gatwick three times a week in winter. The Colombo airport schedule lists SriLankan Airlines from Heathrow nine times a week, and route sites list those flights as nonstop.
Does British Airways fly to Sri Lanka from Heathrow?
Not nonstop. The only nonstop BA flight on the timetable we read leaves Gatwick. The Heathrow options there connect through Doha on Qatar Airways.
Are there direct flights to Sri Lanka from Germany?
Frankfurt is the only German airport on the Colombo schedule, on SriLankan Airlines three times a week, and a route site lists that flight as nonstop. From anywhere else in Germany you will need a stop, whether in the Gulf, in Istanbul, or in Frankfurt or Zurich.
Can I fly direct from Manchester, Birmingham, Scotland or Dublin?
None of these airports appeared on the Colombo schedule when we checked on 31 October 2026. You will connect through London, Europe, the Gulf or Istanbul.
Is the Zurich to Colombo flight all year?
No. Edelweiss lists flights from October 2026 to May 2027 and none from June to October 2027.
