Yes, Sri Lanka celebrates Christmas, and the Central Bank’s list shows Friday 25 December 2026 as a public, bank and mercantile holiday. Go to Colombo or Negombo for churches and midnight Mass, or to the south and west coasts for the beach, because the east coast is much wetter in December. Christians are about 7% of the population, so this is a holiday in a mainly Buddhist country, and the largest Catholic communities are in Gampaha District (which contains Negombo), Puttalam and Colombo. Every date and report below is as it was when we checked on 31 October 2026.
Key takeaways
- Of the festive dates, only Christmas Day is on the holiday list. Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, 31 December and 1 January are not.
- Unduvap poya on Wednesday 23 December is a holiday and a dry day, and the Adam’s Peak season should open then if it follows the last two years.
- Averages from 1991 to 2020 give Colombo and Galle about half the December rain of Trincomalee.
- Two listings show compulsory gala dinners on 24 and 31 December, and neither is a 2026 rate. Ask your hotel before you pay.
Do they celebrate Christmas in Sri Lanka?
They do, though Christians are a small minority. The 2024 census counts 69.8% of people as Buddhist, 12.6% Hindu, 10.7% Muslim, 5.6% Roman Catholic and 1.3% other Christian.
The same census shows why location matters. Gampaha, the district that contains Negombo, has the most Roman Catholics at 442,291, followed by Puttalam at 240,975 and Colombo at 139,882. By our sum from its table, about one person in five in Gampaha is Christian, against under 1% in Galle District. A beach holiday in the south may show you hotel decorations and little church life.
Christmas also reaches beyond the churches. A Sunday Observer feature from December 2024 describes children from Buddhist families making or decorating trees with friends and neighbours. It also describes carol groups going from house to house, firecrackers at midnight, and Christian families sharing Christmas cake, breudher and love cake with non-Christian households. Santa Claus is known as Naththal Seeya, and Merry Christmas in Sinhala is Suba Naththalak Wewa, according to Why Christmas, a page updated on 20 October 2026.
The public displays change from year to year. In December 2024 the Sunday Times reported lights at Colombo City Centre, Dutch Hospital and big hotel chains, and carol competitions run by the Municipal Council. A year later, after Cyclone Ditwah, the same paper described Colombo’s roads as having “a more modest glow”, as groups moved money to flood and landslide victims. We found no programme for December 2026 yet.

Where to go for Christmas: Colombo and Negombo
Colombo
St Lucia’s Cathedral in Kotahena is the seat of the Archbishop of Colombo. St Anthony’s Shrine at Kochchikade was bombed on Easter Sunday 2019 and reopened that June.
Culture Trip, in a piece published in August 2025, describes a yearly fair on Galle Face Green and a Colombo Christmas Street of stalls open for about a week before the day. Treat those as past reports.

Negombo
Negombo is known as Little Rome. Love Sri Lanka says the city has a predominantly Roman Catholic population and more than 25 Catholic churches. It names St Mary’s on Grand Street, built between 1874 and 1922, as one of the largest. It is also close to the airport, so it works for a first or last night around Christmas. Our Negombo guide covers the town, and our airport taxi guide has the fares.
Midnight Mass
Time Out, on an undated page, says midnight Mass on 24 December begins from 11.30pm. In 2024 the Archdiocese announced 11.40pm for the main service, led by Cardinal Ranjith at Our Lady of Sorrows, Ja-Ela, and said Mass was being held in Catholic churches nationwide. So the Cardinal’s Mass may not be at the cathedral, and neither time is a 2026 timetable. The Sunday Observer said in 2024 that Christmas Day services are in English, Sinhala and Tamil. We found no times for 2026, so ask the parish that week.
The Daily Mirror reported on 24 December 2025 that police and the Ministry of Defence had an enhanced security programme for major cities, religious sites, leading hotels and tourist areas. GOV.UK, still current on 31 October 2026, says terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out here and could be indiscriminate. Its list of places includes hotels, bars, restaurants, night clubs, beaches, tourist sites, places of worship and large gatherings, public holidays and religious occasions among them. It tells travellers to avoid crowded public places, stay aware of their surroundings, keep up with local media and follow local authorities. It also records the Easter 2019 attacks on three churches and three hotels in Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa, which killed more than 250 people, 8 of them British.
Christmas Day and New Year dates, 2026/27
This table comes from the Central Bank’s 2026 and 2027 lists, plus the Excise Department’s dry days as the Daily Mirror reported them in February.
| Date | Occasion | On the list? | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wed 23 Dec 2026 | Unduvap poya | Public, bank | Dry day |
| Thu 24 Dec | Christmas Eve | No | Midnight Mass |
| Fri 25 Dec | Christmas Day | Public, bank, mercantile | Dry day, hotel exemption |
| Sat 26 Dec | Boxing Day | No | Saturday, banks shut |
| Thu 31 Dec | New Year’s Eve | No | Colombo fireworks in 2025 |
| Fri 1 Jan 2027 | New Year’s Day | No | Not on the 2027 list |
| Fri 15 Jan | Thai Pongal | Public, bank, mercantile | Tamil festival |
| Fri 22 Jan | Duruthu poya | Public, bank | Full moon day |
On Christmas Day the sale of alcohol is banned, with one exemption for in-house guests. It covers hotels the Tourist Board rates three stars or more with an FL 07 licence, boutique hotels and villas, and hotels with special permits. The poya on 23 December has no such exemption in the report, and we found no dry-day list for 2027.
Unduvap poya and the start of Adam’s Peak
Unduvap is the December full moon, and in 2026 it falls two days before Christmas. The 2026 dry-day list bans alcohol sales on the 23rd and the 25th, but not on the 24th. GOV.UK says alcohol is not usually available on religious holidays and that drinking in public then could be culturally insensitive.
Banks shut on the 23rd, the 25th and the weekend of the 26th and 27th, so the 24th is the only day from Wednesday to Sunday off the bank list. We found no order saying what else closes on Unduvap. For the Vesak festival in May 2026, a national festival, meat shops, betting centres, casinos and nightclubs were reported shut for three days. Ask your hotel what will run on the evening of the 23rd.
Unduvap is also the usual start of the pilgrimage season. Ada Derana says the season runs from Unduvap to Vesak in May, and it opened on Unduvap in 2024 and 2025.
On that pattern the season would open on 23 December 2026, but we found no notice confirming that when we searched on 31 October. If you want to climb during Christmas week, read our Adam’s Peak guide for start times and permits. The 2024 opening drew thousands of devotees, so check the season notice before you plan around it.
Sri Lanka at Christmas: south and west against east
Our December guide has the full weather table. On WMO averages for 1991 to 2020, Colombo gets 171 mm of rain in December and Galle 176 mm. Trincomalee gets 339 mm and Batticaloa 469 mm. Rain days run at 9 and 11 in the west and south, 15 and 17 in the east.
January is drier everywhere on that list, with Colombo at 80 mm and Galle at 87 mm, so late December sits between a wet November and a better January. Sri Lanka Tourism calls December to February the south-west coast’s peak season.
These are averages, and a bad year can break them. GOV.UK’s latest update, on 21 September 2026, added a warning about heavy rain, floods and landslides in the inter-monsoon season. For the sea, GOV.UK warns that surf and rip tides can make many beaches dangerous in parts of the year. It says to take advice from your hotel or tour operator first. Our beach guide covers individual coasts.
New Year’s Eve in Colombo
Galle Face Green was the focus of New Year 2026. Fireworks went off over the Green, the Port City and Lotus Tower. Police expected large numbers of people and vehicles and planned for about 1,200 officers. They warned of heavy congestion in Fort, Pettah, Slave Island, Maradana, Colpetty, Bambalapitiya and Cinnamon Gardens, with some roads around the Green limited if traffic got bad.
If you are leaving a Colombo hotel for the airport that night, allow extra time. We found no police plan yet for 31 December 2026. GOV.UK’s advice on crowded public places applies here too.
Hotels are the other option. A Sunday Times round-up of Colombo parties for New Year’s Eve 2025 ran on 28 December, so look for listings late in the month.

Sri Lankan New Year is in April, not January
The Sinhala and Tamil New Year falls on 14 April 2027, with 13 April as a holiday too, on the Central Bank’s list. That is the national new year, and 1 January is not on the list. Our April guide covers it.
How busy is Sri Lanka at Christmas?
SLTDA recorded 258,928 arrivals in December 2025, the highest month of that year, after 212,906 in November. In early October 2026 the Daily FT put arrivals for the year about 2% behind 2025.
Schools are out for most of this period. The third term ends on 4 December 2026, the O/L exams run from 8 to 17 December, and Sinhala and Tamil schools return on 4 January 2027. Add the Christmas holiday and we would book rooms and transport early for 20 December to 2 January, which is our advice and not a reported figure.
Check for festive charges as well. The table shows what each page said on 31 October 2026. These are examples in alphabetical order, not a ranking, and only the Anantara page is dated for this season.
| Hotel | Page | What it says | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anantara Kalutara | Hotel page | Gala dinner, 31 Dec 2026, not called compulsory | USD 285 |
| Shangri-La Hambantota | Luxury Escapes | Compulsory galas, 24 and 31 Dec, no year given; offer travel ends 23 Dec 2026 | US$178 and US$243 an adult |
| Uga Bay | 2025 bank offer | Compulsory supplement, 24 and 31 Dec 2025; residents’ offer | Not given |
The Shangri-La terms sit on an offer that ends before those dates, so read them as a sign of the practice and not as a 2026 price. Ask any hotel in writing whether a gala applies to your nights.
GOV.UK carried two more notes on 31 October 2026. It says fuel purchases are being limited: all vehicles get a weekly quota, and special arrangements have been announced for tour operators and hotels. We found no October report on how the quota runs now. It also says escalation in the Middle East has caused widespread travel disruption, and that Colombo to UK flights through Middle Eastern hubs could be delayed, postponed or re-routed.
Christmas week plan by region
Pick one or two rows, not all six, and match them to your flights.
| Region | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Colombo | Churches, New Year’s Eve | Traffic around Galle Face Green |
| Negombo | Churches, nights near the airport | Book early for 24 December |
| South and west coast | Beach days, whales | Sea conditions, gala charges |
| Hill country | Adam’s Peak, cool air | Rain, pilgrim crowds |
| Yala and the south-east | Safari | Park notices |
| East coast | Later in the year | Wettest stations in our figures |
The whale season runs from November to April on Love Sri Lanka, which says nothing can be guaranteed: see our Mirissa whale guide. For Yala, Ada Derana reported that Blocks 1 and 2 closed from 14 September 2026 for dry weather and road repairs, with reopening scheduled for 16 October. We found no report confirming that it happened, so check before you pay. Our Yala cost guide sets out the charges.
Questions about Christmas in Sri Lanka
Is Boxing Day a holiday in Sri Lanka?
No, not on the Central Bank’s 2026 list, though the Sunday Observer feature calls it one.
Is New Year’s Day a public holiday in Sri Lanka?
No. The 2027 list starts with Thai Pongal on 15 January, so Friday 1 January is not a holiday.
Can you buy alcohol on Christmas Day?
Sales are banned islandwide that day, except to in-house guests at the hotels the exemption covers. Ask your hotel whether it qualifies.
How warm is it at Christmas?
Galle averages a high of 29.9°C and a low of 23.7°C in December. Nuwara Eliya, in the hills, averages 19.4°C and 11.5°C, on the WMO figures.
Do I need a visa for a Christmas trip?
GOV.UK, read on 31 October 2026, says full British citizen passport holders need an ETA, which is issued free and lasts 30 days, and that you should apply before travelling. Other nationalities are in our visa guide.
