For most trips, combine Sri Lanka and the Maldives by doing Sri Lanka first, with about nine nights there and five in the Maldives in a two-week holiday. The Colombo to Male flight takes about an hour and a half. January to March is the drier overlap on rainfall records, with February the driest shared month. The split is our suggestion, not a rule. We read every schedule, rule and price on 31 October 2026, from desk research only.
Key takeaways
- Colombo airport listed 54 flights a week to Male on six airlines on 31 October 2026.
- Your resort’s transfer decides which Colombo flight works. Seaplanes fly in daylight only.
- A UK passport needs six months’ validity for Sri Lanka and one month for the Maldives.
- The Maldives wants a prepaid booking and a form filed within 96 hours before you land.
- Do not pack alcohol, pork, a vape or anything that could count as an idol for worship.
Sri Lanka first or the Maldives first?
Sri Lanka first suits most people. Out of Office, a tour company, says most travellers go in that order, because temple starts, driving days and safaris make a rest welcome at the end. We add one practical reason. If you fly home from Male, a delay on the Colombo flight costs you beach time, not your flight home. That needs an open-jaw ticket, and Heathrow to Male is listed nonstop.
The other order has a case. Out of Office suggests it for people who want to recover from the long flight first, and Dive Worldwide starts its 16-day trip in the Maldives. Going to Sri Lanka last also keeps anything you buy there away from Maldives customs. Rain at Hulhule, beside Male, falls from 212 mm in December to 87 mm in January, then rises from 49 mm in March to 127 mm in April. So those monthly totals favour ending a December to January trip in the Maldives, and starting a late March to April trip there.
How to split the nights
Sellers vary: Out of Office suggests seven and seven, while Resort Life shows six and four, or eight and six. We lean towards Sri Lanka because each base there costs you road time, whereas the Maldives is one island and one transfer.
| Nights | Sri Lanka | Maldives | Sri Lanka route |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 6 | 4 | 7-day route, shortened |
| 14 | 9 | 5 | Outline below |
| 21 | 15 | 6 | 2-week loop |
A 14-night Sri Lanka and Maldives itinerary
1. Night 1: near the airport after the flight from Europe. 2. Nights 2 to 4: Cultural Triangle, for Sigiriya and Dambulla. 3. Nights 5 and 6: Kandy. 4. Nights 7 and 8: hill country. 5. Night 9: Negombo, about 12 km from the airport, for the early flight. 6. Nights 10 to 14: one Maldives island, then fly home.
Do the hill country by road this winter unless the trains are confirmed. Wikivoyage says Cyclone Ditwah damaged much of the rail network in late 2025. On 26 October 2026 Newswire reported no Main Line trains from Gampola to Nanu Oya, leaving only Nanu Oya to Badulla running. We found no reopening report by 31 October. Sri Lanka Railways told News 1st on 1 October that it plans to resume Colombo to Kandy trains in January.
Colombo to Male flights
This table comes from the departures schedule of Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport, read one day at a time on 31 October 2026. It shows no end date. Times are local. Some flights carry on beyond Male, which is why Gulf airlines appear, so check that they sell the Colombo to Male leg alone.
| Airline, flight | Leaves Colombo | Days | Then |
|---|---|---|---|
| FitsAir 8D921 | 07:01 | Daily | Ends at Male |
| SriLankan UL101 | 07:20 | Daily | Ends at Male |
| flydubai FZ1026 | 11:15 | Daily | Dubai |
| SriLankan UL115 | 13:30 | Daily | Ends at Male |
| FitsAir 8D923 | 14:05 | Tue, Sat | Ends at Male |
| Chongqing Airlines OQ2393 | 16:40 | Tue, Thu, Sat | Ends at Male |
| Gulf Air GF145 | 17:00 | Daily | Bahrain |
| SriLankan UL103 | 18:50 | Daily | Ends at Male |
| Emirates EK653 | 20:15 | Daily | Dubai |
That makes 54 flights a week, and the day counts match the November calendar on FlightsFrom. That site also lists VietJet from 5 December 2026, unconfirmed by the airline. SriLankan also shows UL119 to Gan, in the far south of the Maldives, on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
The flight takes about 1 hour 25 to 1 hour 35 minutes, with Maldives clocks 30 minutes behind Sri Lanka. The Velana airport flight board had UL103 due at 19:45 and GF145 at 18:05, which give those two times.
Leave room for delays. On 31 October 2026 the Velana board showed UL115 from Colombo 207 minutes late, with no reason given. The other Colombo arrivals we saw ran from 8 minutes early to 31 late. One day says nothing about any airline’s record, but it shows why a tight transfer is a risk.

Getting there from the UK
For the way in, see direct flights to Sri Lanka. For the way home, FlightsFrom lists Heathrow to Male nonstop on British Airways, daily, and on Virgin Atlantic, three times a week. We could not confirm those with the airlines, and frequencies change by season, so check before you plan an open-jaw ticket.
Airspace closures and cancelled flights linked to the Middle East were a warning on 31 October 2026 on GOV.UK’s Sri Lanka and Maldives pages. Read both if you connect through a Gulf hub.
Best time for Sri Lanka and the Maldives
January to March is the drier overlap on the rainfall record, but the two weather services do not agree on the label. The Maldives Meteorological Service calls all three months its dry season. Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology puts March in the first inter-monsoon. Rain figures are WMO 1991 to 2020 normals for Hulhule and Colombo.
| Month | Maldives season | Rain in mm, Hulhule, Colombo | Sri Lanka season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov | South-west monsoon | 236, 346 | Second inter-monsoon |
| Dec | Transitional | 212, 171 | North-east monsoon |
| Jan | North-east monsoon | 87, 80 | North-east monsoon |
| Feb | North-east monsoon | 38, 77 | North-east monsoon |
| Mar | North-east monsoon | 49, 103 | First inter-monsoon |
| Apr | Transitional | 127, 249 | First inter-monsoon |
The Maldives service gives 10 to 11 hours of sunshine a day from January to March, against 7 to 9 in other months. One airport station is only a guide. Start dates move too: Edition reported the north-east monsoon beginning on 2 January 2025 and then on 17 December 2025.
For the Sri Lankan side, the national tourism site names the south-west coast as peak from December to February. The Department of Meteorology says that monsoon affects the north-east of the island, so the route above stays west and central. Our weather by month guide has the coast by coast detail.
Entry rules for both countries
This is general information for British passport holders, not legal advice. Confirm with Sri Lanka’s ETA site and Maldives Immigration before you fly.
| Rule | Sri Lanka | Maldives |
|---|---|---|
| Permit | ETA approved before arrival | 30-day visa on arrival, no pre-approval |
| Cost | Free for 40 listed nationalities, including the UK | No visa fee listed; the form is free |
| Passport | Six months from arrival, GOV.UK | One month, Maldives Immigration and GOV.UK |
| Form | ETA application | IMUGA declaration, within 96 hours before arrival |
- Maldives Immigration asks for confirmed return tickets, a prepaid confirmed booking at a registered facility and enough funds. It says each traveller, children included, files a separate declaration, and that you must meet the entry rules of your next destination. So if Sri Lanka comes second, have your ETA before you leave Male. It refuses entry on Israeli passports.
- Sri Lanka’s free ETA runs for 30 days from first arrival, with double entry. The ETA site says the second entry gives only the balance of those days, and the department says an extension in that period ends the double entry. You use that second entry if you fly home through Colombo and leave the airport.
- Staying airside at Colombo on the way home is where official pages conflict. GOV.UK says you need no visa if the connection is within 24 hours. The department requires a transit visa beyond 24 hours. The ETA site says transit passengers need an ETA first. The safer course is to keep your ETA in date and ask your airline in writing.
- Ireland was not on Sri Lanka’s free list on 31 October 2026. Our visa guide has the fees.
What not to pack from Sri Lanka
GOV.UK says it is illegal to bring into the Maldives “anything deemed contrary to Islam, including ‘idols for worship’, bibles, pork and pork products, and alcohol”. Velana airport’s guide lists idols for worship as prohibited and says alcohol bought on the way will be confiscated on arrival, so skip Colombo duty free drinks. Neither says whether a souvenir Buddha counts as an idol, so ask the Maldives High Commission before you pack one. The US government’s trade guide says vapes have been banned since late 2024, including for visitors. GOV.UK adds that you cannot take coral or tortoiseshell out of the Maldives.
Maldives transfers from Male airport
Your resort sets the transfer, so choose the two together. Resorts named below only illustrate published terms.
Trans Maldivian, the seaplane operator, says in its FAQ that it flies only from sunrise to sunset. It allows 20 kg of checked bags and 5 kg of hand luggage, then charges USD 5 a kg plus tax. It refuses smart bags whose battery cannot be removed.
Your landing time matters too. One resort, Centara, takes arrivals landing from 06:00 to 15:00 and recommends a night in Male for later flights. It also says extra nights or changed flights after severe weather are at the guest’s own cost, so check your insurance. Cut-offs differ by resort. The 07:01 and 07:20 from Colombo fit that window, while the 13:30 leaves little room.
Speedboats are the other common route: GOV.UK says most island resorts can be reached by boat. A reseller, for example, lists Baros with a 25-minute shared speedboat. Ask your resort how it handles a late or delayed arrival.
Wego says some resorts use a domestic flight with a boat connection. For guesthouses on local islands, Maldives.com describes public ferries run by MTCC, with limited schedules. Ask your guesthouse for times.

What it costs: dated listings
These are listings seen on 31 October 2026, not quotes or recommendations. Our budget travel guide covers Sri Lanka’s daily costs.
| Item | Listing | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Male to Colombo return | From USD 324, economy | SriLankan |
| Green tax | USD 12 a night at resorts, USD 6 at guesthouses | MMTV report, June 2025 |
| Departure tax and airport fee | USD 100 in economy, in the ticket price | The Points Guy, bookings from December 2024 |
| Seaplane, one resort | USD 550 return per adult from November 2026 | NH Collection Reethi |
| Shared speedboat, one resort | USD 232 per adult, 1 November to 10 January | Reseller listing above |
| Package with 5 Maldives nights, flights not stated | From GBP 2,700 per person | Fleewinter |
| 16-day package with UK flights | From GBP 4,775 per person | Dive Worldwide |
The reseller does not say whether its shared rate is one way or return, and it shows USD 116 up to 31 October, so ask the resort. We could not read the Maldives tax authority’s own rate pages, so both tax rows rest on press reports, and we found no later change by 31 October.
When not to combine them
- You have under ten nights. The flight and transfers take a day. Choose one country, or a Sri Lankan coast from our beach guide.
- You want it in November. Hulhule averages 236 mm that month, Sri Lanka is in its second inter-monsoon, and Ditwah hit in late 2025. GOV.UK’s Sri Lanka page, updated on 21 September 2026 and current on 31 October, warns of flood and landslide risk from inter-monsoon rain.
- The budget is tight. Transfers and green tax can come on top of the room rate, so ask whether a quote includes them.
- You want a drink on a guesthouse island. GOV.UK says alcohol is sold only on resort islands, and possessing it elsewhere can mean arrest and deportation.
- Your dates fall in Ramadan and you want a local island. GOV.UK says it may start on 7 February 2027 and last 29 or 30 days, inside the drier months. It says not to eat, drink or smoke in public in the daytime outside resorts.
- You are travelling as a same-sex couple and are unsure of the risk. GOV.UK says same-sex relations are illegal in the Maldives, with a fine or lengthy prison sentence on conviction.
GOV.UK’s safety page, updated on 12 August 2026 and current on 31 October, says strong tidal currents have caused drownings. It tells you to ask resort staff where it is safe to swim, and to swim only where supervised, designated safe or lifeguarded. It also says the only fully equipped hospitals are in Male and Hulhumale, and many resort islands are hours from emergency care. Sri Lanka’s position is in is Sri Lanka safe.
Questions about Sri Lanka and the Maldives
How long is the flight from Colombo to Male?
About 1 hour 25 to 1 hour 35 minutes, based on the two airports’ published times on 31 October 2026. The clock shows an hour or less going west, because the Maldives is 30 minutes behind.
Is two weeks enough for Sri Lanka and the Maldives?
Yes, for one route in Sri Lanka and one island. It will not cover Sri Lanka’s east coast or the north as well.
Do I need a visa for both?
British passport holders need a free ETA for Sri Lanka, approved before arrival, and get a 30-day visa on arrival in the Maldives after filing the IMUGA form.
Can I arrive in the Maldives in the evening?
Yes, but seaplanes will not fly you that night. Pick a resort with a speedboat that meets evening flights, or book a night near the airport, and tell the resort your flight number first.
If you would like a private Sri Lanka route planned around your Male flight, send Oura Travel your dates.
