Colombo Airport Taxi Cost 2026: Counter, PickMe and Uber

What a taxi from Colombo's Bandaranaike airport costs, from the airport's own fare table, with Uber's and PickMe's rules, the expressway tolls and the extra charges, checked on 29 October 2026.

Colombo Airport Taxi Cost 2026: Counter, PickMe and Uber

A taxi from Colombo airport costs Rs 8,100 to Colombo city (Fort or Kollupitiya) and Rs 3,780 to Negombo on the airport’s own fare table, checked on 29 October 2026 (airport taxi rates). Book one at the airport taxi counters in the arrival lobby or the outer porch, or order PickMe or Uber and meet the driver where the app says (airport transport page). The fares below come from the airport, the app companies, the Road Development Authority or a dated report, and every distance and drive time is a router estimate.

Key takeaways

  • The airport’s table prices each destination in rupees for an air-conditioned car. It adds Rs 130 per extra kilometre and Rs 300 per extra drop.
  • Uber gives no flat airport fare. Its page put the average UberX ride from the airport at 3,432 rupees over the last six months.
  • On the expressway tariffs, a car pays Rs 400 in tolls to Colombo, Rs 800 towards Galle and up to Rs 1,300 at the Hambantota end.
  • The two booking listings we quote, one for Negombo and one for Colombo, both cost more than the counter.
  • Someone meeting you inside pays Rs 500 to enter the arrival lobby, plus parking.

Colombo airport taxi cost by destination

The fares are the airport’s “Air Conditioned Rate”, read in a browser on 29 October 2026. The same fares were on the page when we read it on 6 October. The page gives no date of its own and no vehicle size. The distances and times are our estimates from the OpenStreetMap router, which ignores traffic, so allow longer.

Every fare in the table comes from the airport taxi page. Colombo 1 to 4, 7 and 11 all show Rs 8,100, and Colombo 5 and 6 (Havelock Town and Wellawatta) Rs 8,640. Colombo 8 to 10 and 12 to 15, Borella among them, show Rs 7,884. If Kandy is your first stop, our day in Kandy plan starts in the town. The table also lists Maskeliya at Rs 28,512, the town below Adam’s Peak.

What other pages say, report by report

Other pages print very different Colombo fares. We list only figures that carry a date or that we read live.

Uber’s average covers every UberX trip from the airport, wherever it went, so it is not a fare to the city. AirConnect’s range has no source behind it and sits well below the airport’s own figure. At the Central Bank’s rate of 332.49 rupees to the dollar on 29 October 2026, Kiwitaxi’s USD 45 is about Rs 14,960 (CBSL).

The airport taxi counters in arrivals

Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka), the company that runs the airport, oversees the Airport Taxi Service. It has counters in the arrival lobby and the outer porch, and the airport puts the fleet at over 600 vehicles. Bookings go through +94 11 226 3096 (airport transport page).

The table gives a set fare for each named destination. Going past the destination you gave costs Rs 130 a kilometre, and each extra drop on the way costs Rs 300 (airport taxi rates). So name your hotel’s area exactly when you book. The page does not say how you pay, whether tolls are included, or the counter’s hours. Ask before you hand over money.

Separate from that service, the airport lists six private firms with counters in the arrival lobby that arrange taxis and travel (airport travel services). It publishes no fares for them. In May 2026 the six private taxi operators at the airport told the Daily FT that they pay over Rs 4 million a month in rent. They said metered rivals paid under Rs 100,000 (Daily FT).

PickMe and Uber from Colombo airport

Both apps are on the airport’s own transport page, next to the taxi service and the buses (airport transport page).

Uber

Uber’s airport page tells you to request the ride after landing and then follow the directions in the app. The meeting point might not be at the exit closest to you, Uber warns. The app shows the driver’s name, plate and car colour so you can check before getting in (Uber CMB pickup). There is no flat fare to the city. You see a price at the start, and it can change at the end if tolls or surcharges differ from the estimate (Uber CMB taxi).

On that page Uber says UberX trips from CMB over the last six months averaged 48 minutes and 3,432 rupees. The page prints the Indian rupee sign, but its own structured data gives the currency as LKR, so we read it as Sri Lankan rupees. Uber does not say what the average includes, such as tolls. A standard Uber usually takes two suitcases and an UberXL three, Uber says, though space is not guaranteed.

PickMe

PickMe’s site lists its classes with example cars: Flex (Suzuki Alto, Tata Nano), Mini (Wagon R, Vitz, Aqua), Car (Prius, Axio, Allion) and vans. You can schedule a ride ahead, and PickMe says the app shows the payment options, such as cash, card or digital wallet (PickMe Rides). It publishes no airport fare.

In August 2023 the Daily FT reported a deal for PickMe to run a taxi stand at the airport. The stand was then a 100 square foot area at the Tourist Exit (Daily FT). We found no official word on whether it is still there.

The small-car rule

On 18 June 2025 the Daily Mirror quoted a spokesman for the app taxi firms. He said the airport authority had told them to stop using hatchbacks for pickups, and that only sedans or bigger cars were now allowed. The paper added that passengers who booked a small car had to walk out of the airport area to meet it (Daily Mirror). We found no later report on the rule. If it still applies, a Flex or Mini booking may mean a walk with your bags.

A pre-booked transfer

A booked car meets you at arrivals for a price agreed before you fly. Two listings, read on 29 October 2026:

  • Kiwitaxi listed Colombo airport to Negombo at USD 45 for a Comfort sedan, USD 50 for a four-seat minivan and USD 65 for a Business car. It said you pay in advance, with meet and greet included (Kiwitaxi).
  • Welcome Pickups quoted EUR 27 (LKR 9,135) for a three-seat sedan to the city, with tolls included (Welcome Pickups).

Both cost more than the counter on these two runs, but the driver is booked before you land. We did not compare every booking site. The listings are reports, not our recommendation.

The 187 bus and the train

The airport’s 187 bus goes to Colombo Fort, near the railway station, in about 50 minutes. It runs 24 hours a day from the Departure Terminal Outer Porch and costs Rs 325, plus another Rs 325 for baggage over 23 kg (187 bus). The airport’s transport page lists buses but no train (airport transport page).

Extra costs: tolls, waiting, luggage and parking

Expressway tolls

The Road Development Authority posts its toll tariff as a scan of a gazette dated 17 December 2025 (RDA toll rates). These are Category 1 fares, for a car with two axles and four wheels, from the Katunayake end. The router took the E03 to Colombo and on to the south, and part of the E04 towards Sigiriya. It used no expressway to Negombo, Kandy or Ella.

Yala, TissamaharamaMattala Gate or Hambantota GateRs 1,200 or Rs 1,300
Sigiriya, DambullaMirigama North to Kurunegala, on the E04Rs 300

The E04 line comes from the authority’s Central Expressway scan, a gazette dated 24 April 2023. Pinnaduwa is the interchange for Galle, 8.4 km from the town (Wikipedia). Uber changes its price at the end if a toll was not in the estimate. At the counter, ask whether the fare covers tolls.

Waiting, extra stops and night arrivals

The counter table has no waiting charge and no night rate, only the per kilometre and per drop extras. Uber says its price can change if you add stops, change the destination or the trip runs much longer (Uber CMB pickup).

Luggage and surfboards

None of the taxi pages mention boards. Choose the vehicle by bag count: Uber’s suitcase guide above, one of PickMe’s vans, or ask the counter for a bigger car. The 187 bus charges for baggage over 23 kg.

Parking and entry for whoever meets you

A friend or driver who comes inside pays Rs 500 to enter the arrival lobby, and Rs 300 for a name board (airport lobby rates). Car Park No. 1 charges a car Rs 350 for the first hour and Rs 250 for the second (airport parking). Ask whether a quote covers these.

Arriving: cash, SIM cards, night arrivals and tips

For cash, the airport lists eight banks and exchange counters in the arrival public concourse, open 24 hours, six of them with ATMs (airport banks).

For a SIM card, Airtel, Dialog, Hutch and SLT Mobitel each have a 24 hour counter in the same concourse (airport mobile operators). Our Sri Lanka SIM card guide compares the tourist plans and eSIMs.

If you land at night, the 187 bus, the banks and the SIM counters are all listed as open around the clock. The airport gives no hours for the taxi counter.

GOV.UK’s advice, updated on 21 September 2026 and still current on 29 October, says taxis can be ordered on local or international apps, though fewer are available away from tourist areas (GOV.UK). It reports occasional harassment, particularly of women travellers at night, and says to change tuk-tuk or taxi if a driver worries you. For bank card fraud it suggests ATMs inside banks or hotels. Our Sri Lanka safety guide sets out the rest of that advice.

On tipping, Uber says you can tip in the app or give cash to the driver (Uber CMB taxi). We found no official guidance on tipping counter drivers.

The ETA and other entry rules are in our guide to visiting Sri Lanka. If you land over Christmas or New Year, our Sri Lanka in December guide covers that month’s weather and events.

Questions about Colombo airport taxi costs

Is Uber available at Colombo airport?

Yes. Uber has a page for pickups at Bandaranaike International (CMB), and the airport lists it on its transport page. You request the ride after landing, and the app sends you to the pickup point.

What does a taxi to Negombo cost from the airport?

Rs 3,780 on the airport’s own table when we checked on 29 October 2026. Our router estimate puts Negombo town 10.5 km away, and the beach area about 12 km. Kiwitaxi listed a sedan at USD 45 on the same day.

Can I pay for a Colombo airport taxi by card?

PickMe says its app shows the payment options, such as cash, card or digital wallet. The airport’s taxi page does not say how the counter takes payment. The arrival concourse has ATMs, so carry some rupees.

Is it cheaper to book an airport taxi in advance?

Not on the two listings we quote. Kiwitaxi to Negombo and Welcome Pickups to the city both cost more than the counter fares. We did not compare every booking site.

How long does a taxi from Colombo airport to Colombo take?

Our router estimate is 29 minutes to Fort and 34 to Kollupitiya by the E03 expressway, with no traffic. The airport says its 187 bus reaches Fort in about 50 minutes, and Welcome Pickups puts a car at 35 to 55 minutes.

Book an airport transfer with Oura Travel

We are Oura Travel, based in Weligama, and we arrange private cars from the airport. To plan a longer trip, see the daily cost of a car and driver and how many days to spend in Sri Lanka. For a car waiting at arrivals, see our airport transfers page.

We checked the airport’s taxi table, transport pages, lobby and parking rates, Uber’s and PickMe’s pages, the RDA toll tariff and the listings above on 29 October 2026. Fares and listings change, so confirm at the counter or in the app before you set off.
