Sri Lanka car hire with driver cost LKR 15,000 (about USD 45, before VAT) to USD 117.78 a day per car on the sellers’ pages we read on 19 October 2026. Vans ran from LKR 14,500 to USD 135.90. The price moves with the size of the vehicle, the kilometres included, the number of days, and whether fuel, tolls, VAT and the driver’s room and meals sit inside it. A week brings the day rate down: Lakpura’s standard car costs USD 541.79 for seven days, or USD 77.40 a day. These are other sellers’ published prices, not ours and not our judgement.
Key takeaways
- On 19 October 2026 the sellers in our table listed one day with a car and driver at LKR 15,000 (plus VAT) to USD 117.78 per vehicle. What each price covers changes from seller to seller.
- Read five lines in any quote: kilometres included, fuel, tolls, VAT, and who pays the driver’s room and meals. Malkey charges LKR 4,000 a day for the driver’s meals and room, and Lakpura USD 15 a night for a room.
- Priced from four sellers’ day rates, our 7-day route of about 740 km came to between LKR 130,980 (about USD 395) and USD 735, before extras.
- A chauffeur guide is an official SLTDA category, not a price band. No listing we found priced the two separately.
- In 2024 Department of Labour officials said no Sri Lankan law covers tips. Lonely Planet suggests 10% of the bill for good service.
Sri Lanka car hire with driver: 15 listings on one day
We read every price below on 19 October 2026. The table reports listings as their sellers publish them, in the currency they use, grouped by vehicle. It is not a ranking and not a recommendation. The first table’s 12 rows are day hires and tours; the 3 under the taxi heading are fares. For conversions we used the Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s indicative rate that day, LKR 331.28 to the US dollar (Central Bank of Sri Lanka).

What changes the price of a driver in Sri Lanka
Vehicle size
Size doesn’t always move the price the way you’d expect. Lakpura’s van is USD 18.12 dearer than its car for one day (Lakpura). Malkey lists a six-to-nine-seat van at LKR 500 less than its lowest-priced sedan, with 80 km a day instead of 100 (Malkey). Lakpura sizes its standard car for at most two adults with luggage (Lakpura).

Per day or per kilometre
Most day rates carry an allowance and a charge for each kilometre past it. Malkey counts the allowance across the whole hire, so 300 km over three days, and starts and stops the count at its office in Colombo 6 (Malkey). Lakpura’s allowance shrinks day by day: 180 km on the first, 160 on the second, 140, 120, then 100 for each day after (Lakpura). Taxis price the trip instead. The airport counter lists one fare for each destination, plus LKR 130 for every kilometre travelled beyond it (Airport and Aviation Services).
The driver’s room and meals
Sellers treat this line in different ways. Lakpura leaves the driver’s room out of its price and asks for USD 15 a night where neither you nor the hotel provides one (Lakpura). Malkey charges LKR 4,000 a day for the driver’s meals and room if the client doesn’t provide them (Malkey). PearlTrail and My Sri Lanka Journey put the driver’s room and food inside their GetYourGuide prices (GetYourGuide), and Ceylon Taxi does on multi-day hires (Ceylon Taxi). Whether your hotel has a bed for the driver is the other half of the sum. The one SLTDA rule we found is for heritage hotels: where drivers need to stay overnight, the hotel must give them suitable accommodation and meals (SLTDA heritage hotel guidelines). So ask each hotel, and each seller, before you count it.
Fuel
On 19 October 2026 Ceypetco’s price list showed Lanka Petrol 92 Octane at Rs 414 a litre and Lanka Auto Diesel at Rs 392, both effective from 30 September 2026 (Ceypetco). Ceylon Taxi and the GetYourGuide sellers other than SLTAXI name fuel as included, while SLTAXI’s list doesn’t mention it (GetYourGuide). Lakpura’s fuel covers its kilometre allowance only (Lakpura), and Malkey warns that its charges can rise with fuel prices (Malkey). GOV.UK, in advice updated on 21 September 2026 and still marked current on 19 October, says the government is limiting fuel purchases and that every vehicle will be allocated a weekly quota. Tour operators and hotels, it adds, are to get special arrangements under an announced plan (GOV.UK).
Highway tolls
The Road Development Authority’s toll table was gazetted on 17 December 2025. Between Katunayake and Kokmaduwa it sets Rs 900 for category 1, two axles and four wheels (Road Development Authority). Kokmaduwa is the exit our Colombo airport to Weligama guide uses. Ceylon Taxi names tolls as included (Ceylon Taxi), and so do all four GetYourGuide listings in our table. Malkey’s with-driver page doesn’t mention them (Malkey), and nor do Lakpura’s two listings (Lakpura).
Hours and waiting
A listed “day” has a length. Lakpura’s runs 8 hours, generally between 6am and 8pm (Lakpura). Malkey charges Rs 300 an hour after 8 hours, or Rs 1,000 for a luxury car or a van (Malkey). Ceylon Taxi’s day is 12 hours (Ceylon Taxi), and PearlTrail lists unlimited waiting (GetYourGuide). Ask any seller how a long day with waiting is billed.

Peak season
On Sri Lanka Tourism’s weather page, the months from December to February are the south-west coast’s busiest for visitors (Sri Lanka Tourism). December 2025 was the year’s busiest month for arrivals, at 258,928 (SLTDA). Malkey says its charges carry a seasonal surcharge in busy months but gives no figure (Malkey). None of the other listings printed a seasonal price, so ask for the rate on your dates.
Chauffeur guide or driver: what you are paying for
The two are different official categories. The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) describes a chauffeur tourist guide as someone registered both to guide and to drive a vehicle of up to seven seats. For SLITHM, the licence from SLTDA is the main legal requirement for anyone guiding visitors (SLITHM). A tourist driver takes a four-day course, open to Sri Lankans aged 23 to 60 who have held a Sri Lankan licence for five years (SLITHM). Afterwards they apply for SLTDA’s Tourist Driver Identity (SLTDA). Both kinds can be looked up. The tour guides register filters by guide type, chauffeur included, and the authorised tourist drivers register searches by name, number or association.
On price, we can’t show a difference. No listing we read priced the same car with a chauffeur guide and with a tourist driver. Three GetYourGuide sellers describe their drivers as registered or licensed, and that is their own description (GetYourGuide). Ask any seller, us included, for the driver’s name and SLTDA number, then check it. How to do that is on our driver checks page.
A 7-day trip priced from the listings
Our Sri Lanka itinerary for 7 days runs airport, Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Udawalawe, Unawatuna and back. Its six road legs come to about 740 km and 17 to 20.5 hours, over seven days and six nights. We priced it on four sellers’ day rates from the first table: Malkey’s sedan at the low end, SLTAXI’s USD 105 as the highest flat day rate, and Ceylon Taxi and Lakpura. The 740 km counts the legs only, not driving on days 2 and 5, which have none, or the run to a seller’s start point. This shows how the sums work. It is not a recommendation.
| Listing | The sum | Total | Not in the total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Malkey, Bezza sedan | 7 x LKR 15,000 = 105,000, plus 40 km over the 700 km allowance x 150 = 6,000. Then 18% VAT: 19,980 | LKR 130,980, about USD 395 | Driver’s meals and room, 7 x 4,000 = LKR 28,000, if hotels don’t provide them. “Night out Rs. 300”, 6 x 300 = LKR 1,800. Kilometres to and from Colombo 6 |
| Ceylon Taxi, sedan | 7 x USD 60 | USD 420 | Extra kilometres and any multi-day discount, both quoted separately. If counted day by day, the legs run about 250 km past 100 a day |
| Lakpura, standard car | Its 7-day price. The 900 km allowance covers 740 | USD 541.79 | Driver’s room, 6 x USD 15 = USD 90, where hotels have none. Its count starts and ends at Colombo Fort, not the airport |
| SLTAXI | 7 x USD 105, if every day costs the same | USD 735 | Day 6, about 220 km, runs some 40 km past the 180 km a day, at a rate the listing doesn’t give. Fuel and the driver’s room aren’t mentioned |
So the same week came to about USD 395 at one end and USD 735 at the other, before tickets, hotels and tips. With the driver’s meals, room and night-out charge added, before any VAT on them, the Malkey sum becomes LKR 160,780, about USD 485. Lakpura’s becomes USD 631.79. If you’d rather start from your own list of places, our itinerary planner works out nights and drive times first.
Tipping a driver in Sri Lanka
Lonely Planet’s guide, updated in July 2026, says nobody is expected to tip, but drivers and service staff very much appreciate it. For good service it suggests 10% of the bill (Lonely Planet). In June 2024 the Sunday Times reported that, according to Department of Labour officials, tips and service charges aren’t covered by any Sri Lankan law (Sunday Times). The listings keep tips outside the price. Malkey leaves them to the client’s discretion (Malkey), and Lakpura lists tips as not included (Lakpura).
Other ways to get around, and what they cost
Driving yourself
The airport’s own site says a visiting driver can obtain a temporary licence as soon as they land at Bandaranaike. You need a full home licence still valid for at least a year from that day, an English translation where needed, and your passport and visa. The licence covers motorcycles and light vehicles for up to five months (Bandaranaike airport). The Department of Motor Traffic’s schedule charges Rs 15,000 for one month and Rs 21,000 for up to two (Department of Motor Traffic). For UK visitors, GOV.UK says a hire vehicle needs a Sri Lankan ‘recognition permit’ as well as a 1949 international driving permit (GOV.UK). For comparison, Malkey’s self-drive list had a Toyota Vitz at LKR 45,000 a week with 560 km, against LKR 105,000 before VAT for seven days of its Bezza with a driver. On self-drive, tolls and parking are the client’s, and 21.3% in SSCL and VAT goes on top (Malkey).
Tuk-tuks, PickMe and Uber
Lonely Planet advises against tuk-tuks without a meter, and says Uber works in the main cities while PickMe works in most places (Lonely Planet). PickMe works out each fare from distance, time, vehicle type and demand, and shows an estimate in the app before you confirm (PickMe). Its Rentals service keeps a car and driver with you on an hourly or daily package, with no waiting charges, and takes multi-day bookings by phone on 1331 (PickMe Rentals). Uber’s airport page offers a price estimate before you request a pickup at Bandaranaike, and shows the actual price in the app when you do (Uber). Wikivoyage adds that tuk-tuks can be hailed through both apps, which it names as the most popular in 2025 (Wikivoyage).
Trains and buses
For the hill line, our Kandy to Ella train guide sets out which sections run. Bus fares from the National Transport Commission’s tables are in our Sri Lanka budget travel guide.
Questions about the cost of a driver in Sri Lanka
How much does a private driver cost per day in Sri Lanka?
On 19 October 2026, listings put one day with a car and driver at LKR 15,000 plus VAT (Malkey) to USD 117.78 per vehicle (Lakpura). LKR 15,000 is about USD 45. Wikivoyage’s undated figure for a full day in a Colombo taxi is lower, around USD 40 for about 8 hours (Wikivoyage). Check what each price includes before you compare.
Do I pay for the driver’s food and accommodation?
It depends on the seller. Malkey adds LKR 4,000 a day for the driver’s meals and room if you don’t provide them (Malkey). Lakpura asks USD 15 a night where the hotel has no driver room (Lakpura). Three of the four GetYourGuide listings include both.
Is a chauffeur guide more expensive than a driver?
We couldn’t find a listing that prices the two separately for the same car. The difference is in the licence: a chauffeur tourist guide is registered to guide as well as drive (SLITHM). Ask for the SLTDA number and look it up.
How much is a car and driver for a week?
On our 7-day, 740 km route the listings gave LKR 130,980 (about USD 395) at one end and USD 735 at the other. Lakpura’s seven-day car price was USD 541.79 (Lakpura). The driver’s keep can add LKR 29,800 with Malkey or USD 90 with Lakpura.
Getting a quote from us
Oura Travel works from Weligama, arranging private road trips in which one car and driver stay with you for the route, and our about us page says who we are. The private car with driver page shows no day rate. It says the driver’s room and meals, fuel, tolls and parking are handled by us, while hotels, site tickets, park jeeps and your own meals stay with you. For a single run from the airport, our airport transfers page says every transfer includes fuel, expressway tolls and parking. Send your dates, group size and rough route from either page or our contact page. Then hold our quote against the five lines above, exactly as you would anyone else’s.
Fact check: we opened every listing, fee table and rule quoted here on 19 October 2026 and used the Central Bank’s rate for that day. Sellers change prices without notice, so reopen each link before you pay.
