A Sri Lanka itinerary 7 days long has room for one loop, not the whole island. The one we’d plan has four bases: two nights in Sigiriya, one in Kandy, two in Ella and one in Unawatuna or Galle Fort, with an elephant stop at Udawalawe on the way south. That adds up to 17 to 20.5 hours on the road. When we checked on 5 October 2026, there was still no through train from Kandy to Ella (Colombo Times), so the rail day now starts at Nanu Oya. Go between January and March if you can: those are the driest months at Galle’s weather station (WMO climate normals).
Key takeaways
- One week fits one loop of about 740 km: Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and a night on the south coast. Its six road legs usually take 17 to 20.5 hours.
- On 5 October 2026 the railway’s booking site listed no Kandy to Ella train on the five dates we searched, though it did list trains from Nanu Oya to Ella.
- Tickets for Sigiriya, Dambulla and the Temple of the Tooth, plus a train seat booked online, came to about USD 57 to 61 an adult that day.
- From May to September, go east instead: Sigiriya, Trincomalee and Kandy, a week with 12.5 to 15.5 hours of driving.
Sri Lanka itinerary 7 days: the route at a glance
Seven days here means six nights, landing on day 1 and flying home on day 7.
We ran each leg through the route planner at OpenStreetMap on 5 October 2026. It works on empty roads, so every time is rounded up, never below the planner’s own figure. Leg distances are rounded to the nearest 5 km, and each time in the table links to its route.
| Day | Sleep in | Main stop | Road leg |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sigiriya | Land and drive inland | Airport to Sigiriya: about 145 km, 3.5 to 4 hours. |
| 2 | Sigiriya | Sigiriya rock from 7am (CCF tickets) | No transfer. |
| 3 | Kandy | Dambulla cave temple, then the Temple of the Tooth | Sigiriya to Kandy: about 90 km, 2.5 to 3 hours. |
| 4 | Ella | The tea hills, by road or partly by train | Kandy to Ella: about 135 km, 4 to 5 hours. |
| 5 | Ella | Little Adam’s Peak, then the Nine Arch Bridge | No transfer. |
| 6 | Unawatuna or Galle Fort | A jeep drive at Udawalawe on the way south | Ella to Udawalawe: about 90 km, 2.5 to 3 hours. On to Unawatuna: about 130 km, 2 to 2.5 hours. |
| 7 | Fly home | Galle Fort in the morning | Unawatuna to the airport: about 150 km, 2.5 to 3 hours. |
How many hours will you spend in the car?
Add the six legs and the week comes to 17 to 20.5 hours over about 740 km.
Skip the park on day 6 and the direct road from Ella to Unawatuna is about 200 km, usually 3.5 to 4 hours (OpenStreetMap), which makes the week 16 to 19 hours. Take the train on day 4 and 1.5 to 2 of those road hours become a rail ride.
Why so slow? Outside a few good main roads, Wikivoyage says, the interior’s roads are narrow and bumpy, and you share them with cyclists, pedestrians and animals (Wikivoyage). We’d plan every leg to end before dark.
The 7 day itinerary, day by day
Day 1: airport to Sigiriya
This route skips Colombo: from arrivals you drive north-east to Sigiriya, usually 3.5 to 4 hours. Land late and we’d sleep near the airport, drive up next morning and climb in the late afternoon, which the Central Cultural Fund counts among the cooler times to visit (Central Cultural Fund).
Day 2: Sigiriya rock
Be at the ticket counter when it opens at 7am (CCF tickets), and expect a climb of 1.5 to 2 hours: the Central Cultural Fund counts some 1,200 steps to the top (Central Cultural Fund).
Pidurangala, the rock just to the north, is number two in our guide to what to do in Sigiriya, and the walk up takes 20 to 30 minutes (Wikivoyage). Between July and October, consider a jeep drive at Minneriya instead. Elephants gather at its reservoir in those months, and Love Sri Lanka puts the best viewing in August and September, from 3pm to 6pm (Love Sri Lanka).

Day 3: Dambulla and Kandy
Dambulla’s cave temple is 19 km from Sigiriya, on the way to Kandy (OpenStreetMap), and its five sanctuaries hold 157 statues (UNESCO).
In Kandy, go to the Temple of the Tooth for the evening service, from 6.30pm to 8pm. The temple doesn’t admit visitors in shorts or sleeveless tops (Sri Dalada Maligawa). One night covers the temple and a walk by the lake, while the Peradeniya gardens and the rest of our Kandy in one day plan need a second.
Day 4: Kandy to Ella
Older itineraries gave this day to the train, and by road it usually takes 4 to 5 hours. When you can get seats there’s a better version. Drive about 80 km to Nanu Oya station, allowing 2.5 to 3 hours (OpenStreetMap), and ride the train from there to Ella while the car brings the bags.
Day 5: Ella
Wikivoyage rates the hike up Little Adam’s Peak as relatively easy, puts the Nine Arch Bridge about 45 minutes’ walk from the centre and gives Ella Rock about two hours each way (Wikivoyage).
Pack a rain jacket: from January to March Bandarawela, the WMO station nearest Ella, averages 10 to 15 rain days a month (WMO climate normals).

Day 6: Ella to the coast, with elephants on the way
This is the longest day, so leave Ella by 7am. Udawalawe National Park opens from 6am to 6pm (Love Sri Lanka), and a herd of about 250 elephants is believed to live there all year (Wikipedia). A jeep tour takes several hours (Wikivoyage), which puts you on the coast by late afternoon.
The catch is the timing: Love Sri Lanka says early morning and late evening are the best times for a safari, and this plan puts you in the park around midday. If elephants matter more than a second night in Ella, leave after lunch on day 5, sleep at Udawalawe and enter when the gate opens.
Yala is the other choice for a safari, but it needs a night of its own. Citing dry weather, the wildlife department shut Blocks 1 and 2 for a month from 14 September 2026, to 15 October (Ada Derana), and left Blocks 3 to 6 open (Daily Mirror). A drought set those dates, not a calendar, so check the park’s status before you plan around it.
Day 7: Galle Fort and the flight home
Unawatuna is 5 km from Galle (Wikivoyage). The Portuguese founded the fortified town of Galle in the 16th century, and UNESCO’s listing describes it as the best example of a fortified city that Europeans built in South or South-East Asia (UNESCO).
Our airport transfers page prints 2 hours 15 minutes as the drive time for Galle and Unawatuna, but with a flight to catch we’d allow 2.5 to 3 hours and book an evening departure.

Kandy to Ella in 2026: what’s running
The position on 5 October 2026: no through train from Kandy to Ella. Cyclone Ditwah hit in November and December 2025, and Wikivoyage counts 70% of the railway network as damaged (Wikivoyage). On 2 October 2026, Colombo Times listed three gaps in the hill line. Kandy station was cut off from Peradeniya, and two stretches higher up were under repair: Gampola to Nawalapitiya, then Hatton to Nanu Oya (Colombo Times). Nanu Oya to Badulla, the part that passes through Ella, has carried passengers since 20 June 2026 (Ada Derana).
We ran searches on the railway’s booking site on 5 October 2026 for five dates up to 2 November, and none returned a train from Kandy to Ella. For Nanu Oya to Ella on Monday 2 November it showed a morning and an afternoon train, each taking 2 hours 25 minutes, with reserved seats at LKR 1,200 and LKR 2,500. On Wednesday 14 October the only seats cost LKR 7,000, and the other three dates came back empty (Sri Lanka Railways seat reservations). Booking opens 30 days before travel (reservation FAQ), so buy as soon as your date appears.
The reopening dates on offer are targets: News 1st reported on 1 October 2026 that Sri Lanka Railways had plans under way to resume Colombo to Kandy trains in January (Newsfirst). In September, engineers expected to finish the stretch below Nanu Oya by December (Daily Mirror).
Reopened track can still be interrupted. On 5 October 2026 a Colombo-bound train derailed on fallen earth and rocks on the newly restored line below Peradeniya (Newswire). Trains between Rambukkana and Peradeniya were suspended for a time, and the railway said that afternoon’s departures would run (Ada Derana).
So plan day 4 by road and count the train as a bonus. Read the section-by-section status in our Kandy to Ella train guide before you book, and check again the day before you travel.
What the week costs in tickets
Hotels and the car depend on your dates, so this table leaves them out. These are the fixed prices we could verify on 5 October 2026, for one foreign adult.
| Item | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ETA entry permit | Free for 30 days on 40 passports, UK, US, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand included. Every foreign visitor needs one before landing. | Official ETA site |
| Sigiriya | USD 35, or LKR 11,690, on the list dated 24 September 2026. | CCF prices |
| Dambulla cave temple | LKR 3,000 in cash only, as of September 2025. | Wikivoyage |
| Temple of the Tooth in Kandy | For most countries, LKR 3,000. | Sri Dalada Maligawa |
| Nanu Oya to Ella, reserved seat | LKR 1,200 third class or LKR 2,500 air-conditioned on 2 November. LKR 7,000 on 14 October. Paying online adds 5%. | Seat reservations, reservation FAQ |
| Udawalawe park fee and jeep | No official fee list found. | Department of Wildlife Conservation |
Sigiriya, Dambulla, the temple and a train seat at LKR 1,200 or 2,500, with the 5% online fee, come to LKR 18,950 to 20,315. That’s about USD 57 to 61 at the Central Cultural Fund’s rate of LKR 334 to the dollar on 24 September 2026 (CCF price list).
Udawalawe comes on top: you can buy a day-visitor permit online from the Department of Wildlife Conservation, yet we found no price list there (Department of Wildlife Conservation), and Wikivoyage’s figures date from January 2020 (Wikivoyage). Ask for the park fee and the jeep as one written figure.
When to go, and a week for May to September
The Department of Meteorology’s calendar puts the south-west monsoon between May and September, with the north-east monsoon following from December to February (Department of Meteorology).
At Galle, the weather station averages 71 to 90 mm in each of January, February and March, on six or seven rain days. From May to September every month brings 162 to 316 mm on 14 to 17 days (WMO climate normals), while Trincomalee, on the east coast, gets 26 to 113 mm on two to six days (WMO climate normals). Our Sri Lanka destinations guide lists the driest months at the other bases.
So from May to September we’d turn the week east:
- Day 1: the airport to Sigiriya, in 3.5 to 4 hours, for three nights.
- Days 2 and 3: Sigiriya and Dambulla, then a day trip to Polonnaruwa, 75 to 105 minutes each way (OpenStreetMap).
- Day 4: Sigiriya to Trincomalee, usually 2.5 to 3 hours (OpenStreetMap), for two nights.
- Day 6: Trincomalee to Kandy, usually 4 to 5 hours (OpenStreetMap), for one night.
- Day 7: Kandy to the airport, allowing 2.5 to 3.5 hours (OpenStreetMap).
That’s 12.5 to 15.5 hours between bases, before the Polonnaruwa trip. It leaves out Ella, and the east-coast beach beyond Ella, Arugam Bay, doesn’t fit either: the airport is usually 6 to 7 hours away (OpenStreetMap).
October and November are wet for both versions: Galle, Trincomalee and Bandarawela each average more than 200 mm in both months (WMO climate normals).
One week in Sri Lanka at a slower pace
Four bases in six nights is quick. If you’d sooner unpack three times, drop the Cultural Triangle and take two nights in each place:
- Day 1: the airport to Kandy, allowing 2.5 to 3.5 hours (OpenStreetMap).
- Day 3: Kandy to Ella, by road or by Nanu Oya and the train.
- Day 5: Ella to Unawatuna, with or without Udawalawe.
- Day 7: Unawatuna to the airport.
That’s 13.5 to 17 hours on the road, or 12.5 to 15.5 if you skip the park, and the second coast night gives you a full day on the beach.
Want a different mix, such as more beach or no safari? Start from our Sri Lanka itinerary planner.
What a week can’t cover
We’d leave these for a longer trip:
- Nuwara Eliya. A night there splits day 4 in two: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is a drive of 2.5 to 3 hours (OpenStreetMap) and Nuwara Eliya to Ella 2 to 3 (OpenStreetMap).
- Yala. It needs a night of its own near Tissamaharama, where guest houses and hotels book the jeep tours (Wikivoyage).
- Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. Two nights in the Cultural Triangle cover Sigiriya and Dambulla only.
With five days, our 5-day itinerary starts in Kandy and leaves the Triangle out. With ten, the 10-day itinerary adds a full day in Kandy, a safari at Yala and a beach day. Both still board the train at Kandy, so swap that day for the one above.
Questions about a Sri Lanka 7 day itinerary
Is 7 days enough for Sri Lanka?
Yes, for one loop: Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and a night on the south coast. It costs 17 to 20.5 hours on the road, and Nuwara Eliya, Yala and Anuradhapura have to wait.
What is the best month for one week in Sri Lanka?
For this loop, January to March: Galle’s station gets 71 to 90 mm in each of those months, against 162 to 316 mm from May to September (WMO climate normals). In those wetter months, take the Trincomalee week instead.
Can you still take the Kandy to Ella train?
Not from Kandy on 5 October 2026, the day we checked: the railway’s booking site had no Kandy to Ella train for any of the five dates we searched (Sri Lanka Railways seat reservations). It did list Nanu Oya to Ella trains on two of those dates, so drive there from Kandy and ride the last stretch.
Is there a Sri Lanka itinerary 7 days PDF?
No, we don’t publish one, but the route table near the top holds the whole week, so save or print this page from your browser. Note the date: we checked these facts on 5 October 2026.
Plan your week with us
We work from Weligama and arrange private trips: your own car, with a driver-guide. The private car with driver page lists Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and one beach as its five to seven day route.
On that page, fuel, tolls and parking are inside the arrangement, along with the driver’s room and meals, while hotels, entrance tickets, your own meals and safari jeeps are yours to pay.
Send us your dates and flight times, and say which version of this Sri Lanka itinerary for 7 days you want.
Fact check: we reran the route planner and the railway’s booking site and reread the ticket, rail, park and ETA pages on 5 October 2026. Train services and park closures were still moving that week, so check the linked pages before you book.
