Colombo airport to Weligama is 171 km by road, which usually means 2.5 to 3 hours in a car (OpenStreetMap route). A car booked ahead, a taxi from the airport’s counters or a ride-hailing app can make that run, mostly on expressways. Public transport needs two or three legs: an airport bus to Colombo Fort for the Coast Line train, or one to the Makumbura terminal for an expressway bus (airport transport page). The airport’s own taxi table showed Weligama at Rs 28,944 on 6 October 2026 (airport taxi rates). Oura Travel is based in Weligama and runs airport transfers.
Key takeaways
- By road it’s 171 km on the route planner, about 160 km of it on expressways, and usually 2.5 to 3 hours.
- Two road prices are published: Rs 28,944 in the airport’s taxi table on 6 October 2026, and a Rs 900 expressway toll for a car.
- Three buses by way of Makumbura cost Rs 1,580 plus one local fare. Only the first leg has an official time.
- Airport bus and unreserved train together cost Rs 605 in third class or Rs 875 in second. We print no train times: the railway’s timetable pages were down.
- For the flight home, the airport says to arrive at least 4 hours before departure, so leave Weligama 7 hours ahead at the latest.
Colombo airport to Weligama: every option compared
Fares are those on the linked official or provider pages on 6 October 2026. Road times are the route planner’s, rounded up.
| Option | Time | Cost as sourced |
|---|---|---|
| Booked private car | 2.5 to 3 hours | Quoted per journey (our page) |
| Airport counter taxi | 2.5 to 3 hours | Rs 28,944 (airport) |
| Uber or PickMe | 2.5 to 3 hours once matched | In the app only (Uber) |
| Three buses | 3 hours 20 minutes or more, by our sum | Rs 1,580 plus one fare (bus; NTC) |
| Bus, then train | Not known | Rs 605 or Rs 875 (bus; rail) |
| Flight, then a car | 2 hours 15 minutes with one stop | No fare shown (airline) |
Who each suits is our view. A booked car fits a night arrival, a family or anyone carrying boards. The counter taxi fits people who haven’t booked. The apps need mobile data and time to wait for a match. Buses and trains suit daytime arrivals with light bags.
Cinnamon Air’s winter timetable, in force from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, lists one daily flight from its domestic terminal at the airport. It leaves at 11.00 and reaches Koggala at 13.15 after one stop, with no fare shown (winter timetable). The summer timetable, 1 May to 31 October, lists no Koggala flight (summer timetable). Koggala’s airport is 15 km from Weligama, usually 20 to 30 minutes by road (route).
The road: three expressways and a Rs 900 toll
We ran the route from Bandaranaike International, Colombo’s airport at Katunayake, through the OpenStreetMap router on 6 October 2026. It came back at 171 km and 2 hours 16 minutes on empty roads, which we round up to 2.5 to 3 hours (route). The router takes the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway (E03) for 17 km, the Outer Circular Highway (E02) for 27 km and the Southern Expressway (E01) for 115 km. That’s about 160 km of expressway.
The route leaves the expressway for the B465 at the junction mapped as Weligama Exit (OpenStreetMap). Wikipedia’s interchange list puts the B465 at Kokmaduwa, the name the toll table uses (Wikipedia).
The Road Development Authority’s toll table, read on 6 October 2026, comes from a gazette dated 17 December 2025. It charges Rs 900 from Katunayake to Kokmaduwa for category 1, a vehicle with two axles and four wheels (toll rates).
Three-wheelers and motorcycles aren’t allowed on the expressways, so a tuk-tuk can’t take this route (expressway user guide).
A pre-booked airport transfer to Weligama
This is the option we sell, so we report only what our airport transfers page said on 6 October 2026. Its route table gives one row to Mirissa and Weligama: 175 km and a drive of 2 hours 40 minutes, which fits the range above. The page describes each transfer as private, with fuel, expressway tolls and parking inside the quote. It also lists a name board at arrivals, 60 minutes of free waiting from touchdown, flight tracking and child seats.
Four vehicles appear on the page: a saloon car, a high-roof van, an SUV and a mini coach with 14 to 20 seats. Your driver waits just outside the arrivals exit doors with your name on a board, the page says, and his details reach you the day before. For the current price, see the page.

To vet any driver yourself, ours included, our guide to Sri Lanka drivers explains the official registers and how to search them.
A taxi from Colombo airport to Weligama: counters and apps
The airport’s site says its taxi service is supervised by Airport and Aviation Services, the company that publishes the site. It lists counters in the arrival lobby and on the arrival porch (airport taxi page). Its destination table listed Weligama at Rs 28,944 under “Air Conditioned Rate” when we opened it on 6 October 2026. Each kilometre beyond the destination you named costs Rs 130, and each extra drop Rs 300. The page gives no date, vehicle size, counter hours or word on tolls, so ask before paying.
The airport’s transport page links Uber and PickMe too (airport transport page). On 6 October 2026 neither company’s page gave a fixed fare for this run. Uber’s airport page says to request a ride after landing and take the price from the app, and that the pickup point “may not always be at your nearest exit”. An upfront price can change if the route does or a toll wasn’t factored in, and Uber doesn’t guarantee that a driver will accept. If you can’t find the driver, it says to contact them through the app (Uber). PickMe’s site says rides can be scheduled in advance (PickMe).
Colombo airport to Weligama by bus
Two bus services are listed on the airport’s site, and neither goes to the south coast (airport transport page). The useful one runs to the Makumbura Multimodal Centre at the Kottawa interchange, a terminal for expressway buses (Makumbura Multimodal Centre).
| Leg | Fare | Official time |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to Makumbura | Rs 410 (bus page) | About 50 minutes |
| Makumbura to Matara | Rs 1,170 (NTC) | Not given |
| Matara to Weligama | Not found | Not given |
| Total | Rs 1,580 plus the last fare | See below |
For the last two legs we have only a car’s time on empty roads. That’s 1 hour 50 minutes from Makumbura to the stand mapped as Matara Expressway Bus Stand, then 22 minutes for the 17 km to Weligama (first route; second route). Allowing 2 hours and 30 minutes for those, plus the airport’s 50, gives our minimum of 3 hours 20 minutes, before two waits.
The airport bus is air-conditioned and boards at the Arrival Outer Porch, opposite the Buddha statue. Its undated timetable showed 19 departures a day on 6 October 2026, the first at 5.15am and the last at 6.30pm (airport bus to Makumbura). The National Transport Commission’s fares date from 6 July 2026 (NTC expressway fares). The Makumbura centre’s online board shows only the next departures. When we opened it around midnight, it listed Matara buses at 5.20am, 5.45am and 6.10am (departure board). No official page we found gives the evening’s last one.
Going by Galle instead costs Rs 930 on the expressway bus, so Rs 1,340 before the last hop, which is longer at 28 km (NTC expressway fares; route). For the coast-road bus we have only Wikivoyage’s undated listing: buses pass Weligama on the Colombo to Matara road at least every 20 minutes, round the clock (Wikivoyage). Its fare is in a stage chart we couldn’t read, so we print none.
Route 187 to Colombo Fort is the other airport bus: air-conditioned, 24 hours a day, about 50 minutes, Rs 325, boarding at the Departure Terminal Outer Porch (airport 187 bus). From Colombo, the Commission prices the full run to Matara at Rs 681 on a normal bus and Rs 1,320 air-conditioned. We found no official page naming their stand (NTC inter-provincial fares).
Colombo to Weligama by train
We found no through train from the airport to Weligama on the railway’s pages. Its Weligama fare is quoted from Colombo Fort, where the airport’s 187 bus goes (airport 187 bus). Weligama station is on the Coast Line, 142.8 km from Fort, which is 29 km past Galle and 5 km before Mirissa (Sri Lanka Railways station list).
An unreserved ticket from Colombo Fort to Weligama costs Rs 550 for second class or Rs 280 for third, on the railway’s undated fare notice (fare notice). With the Rs 325 bus, that makes Rs 875 or Rs 605 from the airport.
We can’t give you a train time. On 6 October 2026 the schedule page on the railway’s site said it was “temporarily unavailable while we complete the upgrade” (Sri Lanka Railways). The older timetable search that its booking FAQ still links to wouldn’t open, because its security certificate had expired (reservation FAQ). The seat reservation site did load, with Weligama among its stations (seat reservation site). Ask at Fort station, or try the schedule page again.
Arriving: ETA, cash, SIM cards and surfboards
All foreign nationals need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they land. Since 25 May 2026 it has cost nothing on 40 passports, British, American and Australian among them, for stays of up to 30 days (eta.gov.lk). Our guide to visiting Sri Lanka has the other entry rules.
The airport’s listings put eight banks and exchange counters in its arrival public concourse, six of them with ATMs, all shown as open 24 hours (airport banks). The same listings name four mobile operators there: Airtel, Dialog, Hutch and SLT Mobitel (mobile operators).
Surfboards and bulky luggage
Our transfers page puts the limit for a board inside the high-roof van at 7 feet, laid flat. Longer boards go on a padded roof rack, and the page wants the bag length when you book. Both airport buses list an extra charge, equal to the fare, for baggage over 23 kg, and neither page mentions boards (187 bus; Makumbura bus).
On reserved trains, the railway’s terms allow 40 kg of free luggage in first class, 35 kg in second and 25 kg in third, and prohibit heavy luggage (seat reservation terms). If the boards are for learning, our guide to Weligama surf lessons compares what the schools’ own pages charge.

Night arrivals, official safety advice and the flight home
On the airport’s own pages the 187 bus to Colombo runs 24 hours a day, while the last bus to Makumbura leaves at 6.30pm (187 bus; Makumbura bus). We can’t say when the last train leaves Fort. That leaves a late landing with a booked car, an app or the taxi counter, whose hours the airport’s page doesn’t give. All three mean driving at night.
What GOV.UK says about roads, taxis, buses and trains
GOV.UK last updated its Sri Lanka travel advice on 21 September 2026, and the page was still marked current on 6 October (GOV.UK). The table gives every point of its road safety, taxi, bus and rail passages, in our words except where quoted (safety and security).
| Subject | What GOV.UK says |
|---|---|
| Roads | Some roads may be in poor condition, remote ones especially. On busy ones, watch for pedestrians and animals. |
| Driving | It describes the driving as “erratic”, with road accidents frequent, “particularly at night”. Riding a motorbike can be especially dangerous. |
| A crash | Remain at the scene with your vehicle as long as it’s safe to. Where it isn’t, or where you feel under threat, go to a local police station and report it. |
| Security | Main roads in parts of the country still have security checkpoints. Do what the police or army officers on duty tell you. |
| Stopping | Vehicles that failed to stop when asked have been shot at by security forces. |
| Colombo | Roads around government and military sites are often shut for security, for example to let VIP convoys through. |
| Taxis | They can be booked through local and international apps, and fewer are available outside tourist areas. |
| Tuk-tuks | For hire in towns and villages. Fix the fare first, or take one with a working meter. |
| Drivers | Harassment is reported occasionally, particularly of women travelling at night. If you have any concerns about a driver or how they drive, change to another tuk-tuk or taxi. |
| Public buses | Often driven at speed, rarely give way and often in poor repair, which GOV.UK links to serious bus accidents in recent years. |
| Tourist buses | They tend to be driven more safely and professionally, although standards can vary. |
| On a train | Stay inside the carriage whenever the train is moving. Visitors have been killed hanging out of open doorways or windows. |
| Rail theft | Look after your belongings at all times, because theft and pickpocketing have happened. |
Its summary page says heavy inter-monsoon rain has raised the risk of flooding and landslides across the island, with disruption possible to transport and other services. It tells travellers to ask their travel provider and to follow what local authorities say. It also reports that the government is limiting fuel sales because of the situation in the Middle East, and that each vehicle will be given a weekly quota. Special arrangements for hotels and tour operators have been announced, it says, to limit disruption to tourism (GOV.UK).
Weligama to Colombo airport
Going back, the router gives 170 km and 2 hours 15 minutes, so allow the same 2.5 to 3 hours (route). The airport’s undated departures page says to arrive at least 4 hours before departure, because queues can be long (departure procedures). Three hours on the road plus those four makes 7 hours before take-off. We’d add one more, our own margin, for rain or a hold-up and leave 8 hours ahead.
How to get to Weligama from Colombo, Galle, Ella or Mattala
For other starting points, the same router gives these figures, rounded up the same way.
| From | Road distance | Usual time by road |
|---|---|---|
| Galle Fort | 28 km (map) | 45 minutes to an hour |
| Colombo Fort | 142 km (map) | 2.5 to 3 hours |
| Ella | 174 km (map) | 3.5 to 4.5 hours |
Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is closer, at 96 km from Weligama (route). By road that’s usually 1.5 to 2 hours. On 6 October 2026 the operator’s undated page listed three international airlines: Red Wings, SkyUp and Belavia (Mattala airlines). Its arrivals board listed no flights and gave 12 August as its last update, so check that yours flies there (Mattala arrivals).
Once you’re in town, the Weligama beach guide has the bay’s layout, swimming advice and a weather table. Things to do in Weligama covers the bay and short rides from it, and day trips from Weligama sorts longer outings by the drive.
