Sri Lanka budget travel comes to about USD 507 to 613 a person on our costed 10-day route, with a car and driver shared by two. By bus it’s about USD 285. Both sums leave out flights and beds. Every price in them is sourced, and dated where its source is. Tickets are the fixed cost: Sigiriya is USD 35 and each ancient city USD 30 (Central Cultural Fund). Site tickets: the biggest fixed cost
Foreigners pay up to ten times the local admission price at many sites (Wikivoyage). In the Cultural Triangle, Sigiriya at USD 35 plus Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura at USD 30 each makes USD 95 an adult, or USD 190 for a couple (Central Cultural Fund).
Three ways to cut the bill:
- See one ancient city instead of two and save USD 30 a person.
- Children aged 6 to 12 pay the half ticket (CCF e-ticketing): USD 20 for Sigiriya and USD 15 for each ancient city (Central Cultural Fund).
- Climb Pidurangala, the rock north of Sigiriya. It cost Rs 1,000 in August 2024 (Wikivoyage), about USD 3 at the CCF rate.
The CCF’s tickets page describes a Cultural Triangle round ticket valid for two months (Central Cultural Fund). Its price list showed no price for it on 2 October 2026, so ask at a counter before buying singles.
What a safari costs
A safari bill has two parts: the park’s charges and the jeep. The Department of Wildlife Conservation sells day-visitor permits online (Department of Wildlife Conservation), but we found no fee table on its site.
The jeep is the part you can shrink, because passengers normally share its cost (Wikivoyage). Our Safari Excursion is a private jeep in Yala or Udawalawe, listed from USD 110 a person on 2 October 2026. A note on the page says that price is for the jeep and its driver, with transport from your location added. Its inclusions list also mentions entrance tickets, so ask whether the park fee is in.
Getting around Sri Lanka on a budget
Buses
Public transport links nearly all tourist destinations, and buses are the cheap part of it. They can be crowded and short of luggage space (Wikivoyage). Fares rose on 6 July 2026, when the minimum went up to Rs 34 (Ada Derana). On the National Transport Commission’s table, which is in Sinhala, a normal bus costs Rs 521 from Colombo to Kandy. Air conditioning roughly doubles that to Rs 1,018 (National Transport Commission).
Trains in 2026
On the two routes where we could compare official fares, third class by train beat the bus. Sri Lanka Railways’ undated notice lists Colombo Fort to Anuradhapura, unreserved, at Rs 750 in second class and Rs 360 in third (Sri Lanka Railways). A normal bus on that run is Rs 861 to 989, depending on the route (National Transport Commission).
Cyclone Ditwah damaged 70% of the network in late 2025, though Wikivoyage’s February 2026 notice had the coast line to Galle and Beliatta open (Wikivoyage). On 2 October 2026 Ada Derana reported that services from Colombo Fort to Peradeniya and Gampola had resumed that day. The train it described reaching Peradeniya that morning was a trial run and carried no passengers (Ada Derana). Colombo Times said the regular timetable was due to start that afternoon. Peradeniya to Kandy would stay suspended, it reported, with the Gampola to Nawalapitiya section and the Hatton to Nanu Oya section still under repair. It had trains running normally between Nanu Oya and Badulla (Colombo Times), and Ella is a few stops before Badulla (Wikivoyage). So on that day you couldn’t ride from Kandy to Ella in one go. Check Sri Lanka Railways before you count on a train.
Sharing a car and driver
Our driver cost guide, published on 6 July 2026, lists USD 50 to 70 a day for a standard car carrying one to three passengers. It isn’t consistent on vans: its summary says USD 70 to 100 for four to seven passengers and its table USD 75 to 100 for five to eight (our driver cost guide). Treat them as guide ranges and ask for a quote. Shared, the car is USD 25 to 35 each a day for two and about USD 17 to 23 for three. Six in a van pay about USD 12 to 17 each.
On our private car with driver page, fuel, expressway tolls and parking sit inside the arrangement, as do the driver’s room and meals. Hotels, site tickets, your own meals and safari jeeps don’t.
Sri Lanka budget tours and packages: what’s included
A budget tour package can mean a seat on a group coach or a private car and driver priced for a small party. Oura Travel sells the second kind: our tours page calls every route “Private, never a group tour”. It listed 30 routes of 1 to 21 days on 2 October 2026. Day trips started from USD 50 a person and a six-day route from USD 650. A 13-day route started from USD 1,100, about USD 85 a day, and the four 10-day routes from USD 1,570 to 1,800. The page says each price is per person and moves with the season, the hotel level and how many of you travel.
On the 13-day route’s page, the price covers a private air-conditioned vehicle with a driver-guide, twelve nights with breakfast and the itinerary’s site tickets. Safari jeeps, bottled water, taxes and service charges are in too. Flights, lunches and dinners, visa fees, insurance and tips are not (The Heart of Ceylon).
Wikivoyage warns about operators who pad a route with backtracking, and about drivers who steer you to shops for commission (Wikivoyage). So ask every operator the same questions:
- Is the price per person or per vehicle, and for how many people?
- Are fuel, tolls, parking and the driver’s bed and meals in the price?
- Which entrance tickets, safari jeeps, hotels and meals are covered?
- Are taxes and service charges in?
- Will there be any stops you didn’t ask for?
Food and a bed
For a cheap lunch, go to the small restaurants confusingly called ‘hotels’: pick a busy one and order rice and curry (Wikivoyage). It’s the first of the eleven dishes in our Sri Lanka food guide. Colombo’s small bakeries sell rotis, hoppers and short eats at Rs 50 to 100 an item, on an undated Wikivoyage figure (Wikivoyage).
For a day’s food, take Wikivoyage’s prices: breakfast Rs 1,200, rice and curry Rs 300 to 500, kottu Rs 1,000 and two litres of water Rs 300 (Wikivoyage). That’s Rs 2,800 to 3,000, or about USD 8.40 to 9 at the CCF rate. The figures are from 2025, apart from the undated rice and curry price, so allow more.
Beds are the cost we can’t date. Wikivoyage says you’ll find simple rooms, hostels and homestays across the country, and that you can’t book the cheapest homestays online. Its undated figures are about EUR 25 a night for those and EUR 30 to 60 for small boutique hotels on the coast (Wikivoyage).
When fewer visitors come
Sri Lanka Tourism calls December to February the peak tourist season on the south-west coast. It says May to September brings heavy rain there and is the best time for Trincomalee, Arugam Bay and Jaffna (Sri Lanka Tourism). Countrywide, 277,327 visitors arrived in January 2026 against 124,551 in June. April, May and June were the three quietest months of the year up to August (SLTDA). Those are national counts, not a guide to one beach or to room rates.

Free and cheap things to do
Wikivoyage notes, without a date, that even a remote Buddha statue or waterfall now charges Rs 300 or more (Wikivoyage). The Nine Arch Bridge near Ella was free on its August 2024 listing (Wikivoyage). A walk round the walls of Galle Fort is free too, and a 2021 note warns against unauthorised guides who charge for it (Wikivoyage).
Money: cash, cards and what’s added to the bill
Keep a stock of Rs 50, Rs 100 and Rs 500 notes: away from hotels and large shops, few people can break a big one (Sri Lanka Tourism). The bigger towns have ATMs, but some machines reject foreign cards (GOV.UK). Most hotels, restaurants and shopping centres take credit cards, and a surcharge for paying by card is illegal (Sri Lanka Tourism).
Businesses registered for VAT charge 18% (Inland Revenue). Hotels and restaurants may also add a service charge. The Sunday Times reported in June 2024, citing labour officials, that Sri Lanka has no law on service charges or tips (Sunday Times). Ask whether a quoted price includes both.
A costed 10-day Sri Lanka budget trip
Road times are OpenStreetMap’s, rounded up for traffic. We’ve put the safari at Udawalawe. Yala’s Blocks 1 and 2 closed for drought on 14 September 2026 (Ada Derana). The closure was announced as lasting until 15 October, so check Yala’s status before you choose it.

A budget for Sri Lanka built from the first table, for one adult:
- Tickets and safari: USD 145 plus Rs 9,540.
- Car and driver for 10 days at our guide’s USD 50 to 70 a day: USD 500 to 700, so USD 250 to 350 each for two.
- Food at Rs 2,800 to 3,000 a day: Rs 28,000 to 30,000.
That’s USD 395 to 495 plus Rs 37,540 to 39,540. At the CCF rate the total is about USD 507 to 613 a person. It’s our estimate on 2 October 2026, not a quote.
By bus, take the normal fare from Colombo to Badulla, Rs 1,117 (National Transport Commission). At 214 km, that ride is longer than any leg here (OpenStreetMap). Seven days of this route include a road journey. If each cost that much, buses would total about Rs 7,800. We’d treat that as a ceiling, and it brings the trip to about USD 285.
Not included: flights, beds, the day 5 train fare, the park fee if your safari quote leaves it out, transport to the park, local tuk-tuks, drinks other than water, tips and insurance.
