About this trip

About this route

Ten days of walking, trains and waterfalls, for people who would rather be on a path than in a car. You spend the first half on a working tea estate above Kandy and in the Knuckles cloud forest, then take the hill country train down to Ella and finish on village trails near Wellawaya and a night inside Galle Fort.

The route climbs from the airport to Elkaduwa, crosses to Kandy and the Knuckles, runs by rail to Ella, drops to Wellawaya and ends on the south coast.

It is private throughout, with your own vehicle and driver-guide for all ten days, so the walking days can be lengthened, shortened or swapped as you go.

Why this route works

  • Three nights on the tea estate, so you unpack once and walk straight out of the door.
  • The Knuckles range is a World Heritage cloud forest with its own weather, and it is far quieter than the trails around Ella.
  • Four waterfalls with pools you can swim in, including Diyaluma, the second highest in the country.
  • The train is a working service through the tea country, not a tourist charter.

Who it suits

  • Walkers. There are two treks of about five hours and several shorter ones.
  • Anyone who wants the hill country slowly rather than as a photo stop.
  • Swimmers, because most of these waterfalls have a pool at the bottom or the top.

Who it does not suit

  • If you want temples and ancient cities, this route barely touches them.
  • If steep, rough descents are difficult for you, the Diyaluma trek is the one to swap out, and we will swap it.

Included activities

  • Kandy city tour and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
  • Tea estate walk with the field manager
  • Knuckles cloud forest and waterfall trek
  • Upcountry train journey
  • Ravana falls and the Ravana caves
  • Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak
  • Paddy field cultivation at Wellawaya
  • Village walk, Kirindi Oya river and a night trail
  • Ella Wala waterfall and the trek to Diyaluma
  • Cooking demonstration
  • Galle Fort walking tour

Best time to go

The hill country can be walked all year, but this side of the mountains is wettest from roughly October to January, when the trails get slippery and the views close in. The Galle night at the end is best from November to April, which is the south coast season. If your dates fall in the wet months we move the hardest treks to the mornings.

How booking works

Send your dates through the enquiry form on this page, or message us on WhatsApp. You get back a day by day plan with the hotels named and a price for your group. Nothing is held or charged while you think about it.

To confirm, we ask for a deposit of 50 percent of the total, with the balance due at least five days before you arrive. Bookings made within ten days of arrival are paid in full at the time of booking. Card payments are handled by PayHere, and a booking is confirmed only once we send you written confirmation.

Prices shown here are per person in US dollars, based on the level 1 hotels. A higher hotel level, extra nights or changes to the route all change the price, so ask us for a quote on your own dates. Cancellation terms are set out in our refund policy.

Day by day

A plan, not a timetable. Any day can be swapped once you are here.

Day 1 Journey through fields and forests

Your driver-guide meets you at the airport and drives straight up into the central hills. The road leaves the coast, follows the paddy valleys and then climbs into tea and forest, and the last stretch to Elkaduwa winds through mist most afternoons.

It is a long first drive, so nothing else is planned. You have three nights here and the walking starts tomorrow.

Day 2 Kandy city , Temple of the Tooth

Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and still works as the centre of the country. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic holds the most important Buddhist relic in Sri Lanka, and your visit is timed around the puja, when the shrine is opened and the drummers play.

The rest of the day is yours for the lake path, the market or the forest reserve above the town. Back at the estate there is a waterfall trail with a pool at the end of it.

Day 3 Tea tour , Cloud Forest , Waterfalls Trek

You walk the estate with the field manager while the pluckers work. The rule is two leaves and a bud, and you follow the crop back to the weighing shed to see what a day actually earns.

In the afternoon you move on to the foothills of the Knuckles range, a cloud forest and World Heritage Site with its own weather and a long list of species found nowhere else. Take the slower road and there are waterfalls on the way.

Day 4 Scenic Train Ride , Ravana Ella Waterfall

This is the train day. The upcountry line winds through villages, forest and tea estates, then round high passes with the valleys open below. It is a working service, so it is rarely quiet and rarely on time, and it is still the part of the trip people describe first when they get home.

Afterwards there is Ravana falls and the caves above it, or a rest, depending on what the timetable did to your afternoon.

Day 5 Little Adams Peak , Nine Arch Bridge

About five hours of walking that takes in most of what Ella is known for. The Nine Arch Bridge is a stone viaduct built without steel, and trains still cross it several times a day if you time it.

Demodara station below has the only spiral loop in the country, where the line passes under itself to lose height. Little Adam's Peak finishes the day. It is a steady climb rather than a scramble, and the last hour of light is the reason to do it late.

Day 6 Paddy Field Cultivation , Diyaluma Waterfall View

The road from Ella to Wellawaya drops out of the hills fast. You stay in a valley of paddy fields ringed by mountains, where the fields beside the property are farmed by the village rather than staged for guests.

You can learn how the rice year runs and join whichever part of it is happening that week. Later there is a viewpoint for the Diyaluma falls, which you will be climbing in two days.

Day 7 Village Trek , Kirindi River , Night Trail

The morning goes on footpaths between fields and riverbanks, which is how people here actually get from one place to another. Expect to be greeted a great deal, and to be offered tea, a coconut or something sweet from a wayside hut.

There is a stop at the Kirindi Oya for a swim before the walk back through the paddy. After dark you go out again on the jungle trails to look for what only moves at night.

Day 8 Ella Wala Waterfall , Diyaluma Waterfall

The morning walk follows forest trails to Ella Wala, a waterfall of four or five metres with a natural pool under it. It is shallow, quiet and made for a swim and a picnic.

The afternoon is the hard one. Diyaluma is the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, with a main drop of about 220 metres and a chain of pools at the top. The climb is steep and rough underfoot. The pools are the reason people do it anyway.

Day 9 Explore Galle City , Old and New

A drive to the south coast and Galle, the oldest living city in Sri Lanka. The fort is a walled town the Dutch built on Portuguese foundations, and people still live and work inside it.

You walk the ramparts and the cobbled lanes with your guide, past the lighthouse, the old warehouses and the churches, with time left for the cafes, galleries and jewellers. Late afternoon on the wall is the best hour of the day.

Day 10 flight home

Your driver-guide takes you back to the airport. From Galle it is roughly two and a half hours on the southern expressway, and we set off with enough time in hand for the check-in queues. If your flight is late, there is room for one more stop on the way.
