Yala safari cost starts with the park fee: USD 25 a foreign adult per daytime entry in the tourist season (USD 20 at other times), plus USD 10 per jeep and tax (Gazette 2292/11). On 29 October 2026 a half-day private jeep cost USD 65 on the yalasrilanka.lk rate card and USD 80 to 100 on Lakpura’s Pelago listing. Add tourist-season park fees and four to six sharing pay about USD 37 to 53 each before tax (yalasrilanka.lk; Pelago). Listings that fold in tickets and tax came to about USD 57 to 60 a head in a jeep of four to six (SL Ride; Exclusive Yala Safari). These are other sellers’ prices, read on one day, not ours.
Key takeaways
- The park charges per entry, not per day. Go in at dawn and again after lunch and you pay twice; stay in all day and you pay once.
- Sellers’ figures for the gate ran from USD 25 before charges and tax to about USD 50 per foreign adult, so ask what yours includes.
- On one rate card a full-day jeep costs LKR 7,550 less than two half days.
- The cheapest per-person listings started at USD 13 to 25 a head, before tickets. A private jeep holds up to six on most listings, at one price for the vehicle.
- Dry weather closed Blocks 1 and 2 from 14 September 2026, with 16 October announced for reopening. We found no Sri Lankan news report confirming that they had.
What you pay the park: the official fees
The 2022 rules, published in the Gazette on 8 August that year, put Yala in Category I alongside Udawalawe, Minneriya, Wilpattu and Kaudulla (Gazette 2292/11). On 29 October 2026 the UNEP law database showed nothing newer (UNEP LEAP).
| Charge | Tourist season | Regular period | What the source says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foreign adult, daytime | USD 25 | USD 20 | Per entry |
| Child aged 6 to 12 | USD 15 | USD 10 | Under 6 free |
| SAARC adult | USD 20 | USD 15 | SAARC child USD 10 or 8 |
| Service charge | USD 10 | USD 10 | Charged per jeep when foreign visitors enter by day |
| Vehicle fee | Rs 300 | Rs 300 | Jeep, van or double cab; the gazette ties it to bungalow and campsite stays |
| Government taxes | Added | Added | “Subject to the taxes and charges imposed by the Government”; no rate named |
Every row is from the gazette. It lets the Director-General decide which months count as the tourist season, makes a permit valid for one entry only, and fixes the daytime visiting window at 6am to 6pm. It names no tax rate, and we found no official page that does. The Udawalawe Safari Help price list below adds 18%, which has been the standard VAT rate since 1 January 2024 (Daily Mirror). Two other sellers say VAT comes on top without giving a rate. You pay in rupees at the gate, and yalasrilanka.lk says the rupee figure moves with the exchange rate (yalasrilanka.lk). Permits can also be bought ahead on the wildlife department’s eServices, with a convenience fee for paying online (permit terms).
The gate total, report by report
We found no official page that prints the total a foreign adult pays at the gate, so we dated every seller’s figure we could read.
| Report | Date | Foreign adult | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Udawalawe Safari Help price list (PDF) | Uploaded December 2025 | USD 25 | Plus USD 11 service fee per group and 18% tax |
| Exclusive Yala Safari (fee page) | 22 September 2026 | About USD 25 | Before service charges and VAT |
| Yala Safari Service on Pelago | Read 29 October 2026 | USD 30 | “+ tax and vat” |
| Shehan Safari Jeep Tours on GetYourGuide | Read 29 October 2026 | USD 43 | Entrance and service fee together |
| Ajith Safari (price list) | Read 29 October 2026 | About USD 43 | Confirmed before each tour |
| Yala Safari Booking (price page) | Read 29 October 2026 | USD 42 to 45 | SAARC adult about USD 40 |
| Yala National Park Safari Tour on GetYourGuide | Read 29 October 2026 | About USD 50 | Bought at the gate |
The two USD 25 figures say they are before charges and tax; the USD 42 to 50 figures do not say what they cover. Our own sum from the gazette, for one adult alone in a jeep in the tourist season, is USD 35 before tax. The price list’s 18% would make it USD 41.30, but that rate is the seller’s, not the gazette’s.
Yala jeep and tour prices: 15 listings read on 29 October 2026
Each price below was read on 29 October 2026. The rows show what each seller publishes, grouped by the site it appears on; they are not a ranking and not our advice. GetYourGuide and Pelago show “from” prices for their default booking, so another date or group size can cost more. We converted rupee prices at LKR 332.49 per dollar, the Central Bank’s indicative rate for that day (CBSL).

An Airbnb host also listed a 4-hour morning drive from LKR 16,614 a group, about USD 50, with pick-up from Tissamaharama, Kataragama and nearby villages. It does not say whether the park ticket is in that price (Airbnb). Two rate cards disagree on the full day: Exclusive Yala Safari quotes the official Block 1 rate as LKR 31,350, against LKR 35,350 on yalasrilanka.lk. The booking site yalasrilanka.lk titles itself the park’s official site, but we could not find who runs it. Viator, Klook and Tripadvisor showed us only a bot check that day, so they are missing.

Yala safari cost per person, by group size
The jeep is priced per vehicle and the park fee per head, so each extra passenger lowers your share of the jeep. The middle column takes the yalasrilanka.lk half-day rate of LKR 21,450 and adds the gazette’s tourist-season fees before tax. The last column divides SL Ride’s per-jeep prices, which include tickets and tax, by the number of people (SL Ride).
| People in the jeep | Rate card plus park fees, before tax | SL Ride all-in, a head |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | USD 100 | USD 110 |
| 2 | USD 62 | USD 70 |
| 3 | USD 50 | USD 63 |
| 4 | USD 44 | USD 60 |
| 5 | USD 40 | USD 58 |
| 6 | USD 37 | USD 57 |
SL Ride’s column is higher at every size, and its price also covers tax, water and snacks. Children cost less: SL Ride charges USD 24 for a child aged 5 to 11, and under 5 is free on its list.
Half day or full day, morning or afternoon
Half day or full day
A permit covers a single entry (Gazette 2292/11). So a full day spent inside the park needs one set of fees, while a morning drive and an afternoon drive need two. On the yalasrilanka.lk rate card, two Block 1 half days come to LKR 42,900 for the jeep and a full day to LKR 35,350 (yalasrilanka.lk). Lakpura’s Pelago listing prices a private jeep without tickets at USD 80 for 3 hours, USD 100 for 6 and USD 165 for 12 (Pelago).

Morning or afternoon
Neither the yalasrilanka.lk rate card nor Lakpura’s listing prices a morning drive differently from an afternoon one. Wikivoyage gives 05:00 and 14:30 as the usual start times for tours from Tissamaharama (Wikivoyage). The park is generally closed to visitors from noon to 2pm, according to SLTDA’s December 2025 visitor management report (SLTDA report). The yalasrilanka.lk planning page suggests entering just after 6am or after 4pm, when animals come out of the shade (plan your trip).
Shared or private jeep
Sharing splits the jeep, not the park fee. Lonely Planet’s January 2026 safari article says you’ll easily find people to share a 4WD for Block 1. For Bundala or the other parts of Yala you’ll probably need your own (Lonely Planet). Wikivoyage’s Yala page also says the cost is usually split between the people in the truck, and that pairing up with others helps you bargain (Wikivoyage).
In the listings, Ajith Safari’s per-seat rate starts at USD 15 and a shared GetYourGuide jeep at USD 25 a head, both before tickets. A private jeep on the yalasrilanka.lk card costs the same LKR 21,450 whether one person rides or six. Split four ways, that rate card comes to about USD 16 a head before fees, close to a shared seat. So sharing saves most for one or two people.
Block 1, other blocks, and where you are picked up
Most people take a half-day safari in Block 1, Lonely Planet says (Lonely Planet), through the Palatupana or Katagamuwa gate (yalasrilanka.lk). The rate card charges LKR 1,650 more for a half day through Galge, the gate for Blocks 5 and 6 (yalasrilanka.lk). The park fee does not change: the gazette sets one Category I fee for Ruhunu (Yala) and names no blocks (Gazette 2292/11). What each block is like, and which one has leopards, is in our Yala National Park guide.
Pick-up is the other line to check. The yalasrilanka.lk rates include pick-up in the Tissamaharama and Kirinda area and charge for anywhere else on request. SL Ride’s is free for hotels in Yala, Tissa and Kirinda (SL Ride). Lakpura’s Pelago listing picks up within 5 km of the Palatupana gate and not beyond (Pelago). Lonely Planet adds that hiring a 4WD in Kirinda or Kataragama is possible but harder. Getting to Tissamaharama from Colombo, Ella or the south coast is set out in how to get to Yala National Park, and what a car with driver costs covers the drive itself.
Tips, water and binoculars
The gazette sets no tracker fee. The yalasrilanka.lk planning page says the park ticket includes a tracker and that trackers are in short supply. It adds that “Rs.500 would be par for the course” as a tip (plan your trip). For the driver, Lonely Planet’s Udawalawe jeep price is “plus tip” (Lonely Planet), and three listings in our table leave tips out of the price. Tipping is your call, and no rule we found sets an amount.
Bottled water came with seven of the listings in our table, and Lakpura’s second Pelago page gives 500 ml a person (Pelago). Yala Dreams and Thivein list binoculars among what’s included. The other listings don’t mention them, so bring a pair if you can.
The 2026 closure and your booking
The wildlife department shut Blocks 1 and 2 to tourists from 14 September 2026, citing the dry weather (Newswire), while Blocks 3 to 6 stayed open (Daily Mirror). The park authorities then set 6am on 16 October as the reopening time, the Daily Mirror wrote on 12 October (Daily Mirror). When we searched again on 29 October 2026, the newest item on Newswire’s Yala tag page was still that announcement (Newswire). The one report of the reopening itself came from srilankavisits.com on 19 October (Sri Lanka Visits). That is a travel website with its own tours and packages pages, not a news outlet, and we found no Sri Lankan news report saying the same. So treat the reopening as announced, not confirmed, and ask your seller which block you’ll enter before you pay. The closure history and the best months are in our Yala guide, and the weather by month page covers the seasons.
Udawalawe, Bundala and Minneriya: what they cost instead
Udawalawe and Minneriya sit in Category I with Yala, so their park fee is the same USD 25 or 20. Bundala is in Category II, where a foreign adult pays USD 12 and a child USD 6 for a daytime visit, plus the same USD 10 per vehicle (Gazette 2292/11). In a jeep of four, that’s USD 14.50 a head in fees at Bundala before tax, against USD 27.50 at Yala.
The jeep can undo the saving. On 29 October 2026 Ajith Safari’s per-person list started at USD 30 for a half day at Udawalawe, USD 40 at Bundala and USD 35 at Minneriya. Its Yala rate was USD 15 (Ajith Safari). Lonely Planet gives about Rs 10,000 plus tip for a half-day jeep at the Udawalawe gate (Lonely Planet), and says Bundala usually means a private 4WD. For choosing a park by animal and month, see the Sri Lanka safari guide, and the Minneriya safari page covers the elephant gathering. If you are on the south coast anyway, whale watching from Mirissa has its own boat prices.
Questions about Yala safari cost
How much is a Yala safari per person?
In a half-day private jeep shared by four to six, about USD 37 to 53 each before tax, using the two rate cards above and the gazette’s tourist-season fees. All-in listings that include tickets and tax came to USD 57 to 60 a head on 29 October 2026. Alone, the same sums give about USD 100 to 110.
Is the park fee included in the jeep price?
Usually not. Ten of the 15 listings in our table leave the ticket out, and the yalasrilanka.lk rate card says its prices exclude entry tickets bought at the gate (yalasrilanka.lk). Ask for a written quote that splits the jeep, the park fee, the service charge and the tax.
Is a half day or a full day better value?
Per hour, the full day. One full day is one entry, and on one rate card the jeep costs LKR 7,550 less than two half days. If you only want one drive, a half day costs less in total.
What is the best time of day for a Yala safari?
Early morning or late afternoon. The park generally closes to visitors from noon to 2pm (SLTDA report), and the yalasrilanka.lk planning page suggests entering just after 6am or after 4pm.
Do I need to book a Yala safari in advance?
The wildlife department sets a number of permits for each park and closes bookings once it is reached (permit terms). SL Ride advises booking ahead in December to April (SL Ride). Booking a jeep a day or two ahead also lets you confirm which block is open.
