Is Sri Lanka cheaper than Thailand? On the sources we read on 24 October 2026, Sri Lanka was cheaper for rooms, sit-down dinners, trains and mobile data. Thailand was cheaper for heritage tickets, national park entry and fast domestic travel. A cheap local meal and a beer cost about the same in both. For a two-week trip, transport and site tickets decide it. Buses and trains cost little, but a car and driver started at about USD 45 a day on listings our driver guide read on 19 October, enough to cancel the savings on rooms and food.

Sri Lanka vs Thailand cost: the price table

Every price below was read on 24 October 2026 unless the row says otherwise. We converted rupees at LKR 332.03 to the US dollar, the indicative rate published by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka for 23 October 2026 (Central Bank of Sri Lanka). Baht were converted at THB 33.65, the Bank of Thailand’s weighted-average interbank rate for 22 October 2026 (Bank of Thailand). We ran each room search on one booking site for the same night, Monday 16 November 2026, and took the first results in its default order. Treat those rows as a snapshot of what was listed that day, not a price you will be offered.

Where Sri Lanka is cheaper

Rooms and dorm beds

On the same night, we found Sri Lankan rooms cheaper in both pairs of towns. The middle half of Kandy’s three-star results ran from USD 22.50 to USD 43.75. In Chiang Mai the same slice ran from USD 31.25 to USD 75.25 (Booking.com). We added Booking’s separate taxes line where shown, which applied to 15 of the 20 Kandy cards and 1 of 20 in Chiang Mai. Dorm beds were closer, USD 11 against USD 13 at the median. Wikivoyage’s Sri Lanka page takes the other view and calls accommodation “a little more expensive” than in Southeast Asia (Wikivoyage). One November night can’t settle that argument, so price your own dates in both places before you choose.

Sit-down meals

Wikivoyage prices a local plate of rice and curry between Rs 300 and Rs 500, served as a large mound of rice ringed by several curries (Wikivoyage). Numbeo’s average for a cheap restaurant meal is higher, LKR 950, and almost level with Thailand’s THB 100 (Numbeo).

The gap opens one level up: a three-course dinner for two in a mid-range restaurant averaged USD 19.58 in Sri Lanka and USD 26.60 in Thailand on the same index (Numbeo). What a typical Sri Lankan menu holds, from hoppers to kottu, is in our Sri Lanka food guide.

Trains and buses

Sri Lanka’s trains are cheap by the kilometre. Second class from Colombo Fort to Anuradhapura costs Rs 750 and third class Rs 360 (Sri Lanka Railways). The railway’s station list puts Anuradhapura 205 km from Colombo Fort (Sri Lanka Railways). That works out at about USD 1.10 per 100 km in second class. Thailand’s Bangkok to Chiang Mai day train cost THB 391 in second class and THB 231 in third in April 2022 (Wikivoyage). Chiang Mai is 751 km up the Northern Line (Wikipedia). That makes Thai second class about USD 1.55 per 100 km, at 2022 fares. Sri Lankan buses are cheap too: the ordinary Colombo to Kandy fare is Rs 521, about USD 1.57, on the National Transport Commission’s July 2026 table (National Transport Commission).

Mobile data

Dialog’s tourist plans cost Rs 1,399 a month including tax for 20GB and Rs 1,799 for 30GB, with some call credit (Dialog). Numbeo’s monthly phone plan with 10GB or more averages USD 4.13 in Sri Lanka and USD 12.41 in Thailand (Numbeo). In Thailand, Wikivoyage found a 30GB, 30-day SIM at 7-Eleven for THB 199 in November 2025 (Wikivoyage).

Where Thailand is cheaper

Heritage tickets

Tickets are where Sri Lanka gets expensive. At many sites, foreign visitors can be charged as much as ten times what locals pay, Wikivoyage notes (Wikivoyage). On the Central Cultural Fund’s list, Sigiriya is USD 35 for a foreign adult, while Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura are USD 30 apiece (Central Cultural Fund). Those three come to USD 95. National parks

Yala, Udawalawe and Minneriya are Category I parks in Sri Lanka’s 2022 fee gazette. Foreign adults are charged USD 25 per daytime entry during the tourist season, or USD 20 in what the gazette calls the regular period (Gazette 2292/11). Government taxes come on top, and a foreign group pays a USD 10 service charge for each vehicle on a day visit. The jeep is a separate bill: in January 2026 Lonely Planet put a half day at Udawalawe at around Rs 10,000 for vehicle and guide (Lonely Planet). By comparison, Khao Yai National Park charged foreign adults THB 200 through its booking app in July 2023, with another THB 200 at two of its entrances (Tourism Authority of Thailand).

Domestic flights

Long hops favour Thailand. AirAsia MOVE’s fare calendar showed Bangkok Don Mueang to Chiang Mai from THB 1,317 to THB 2,115 one way, for departures between 24 October and 15 November 2026 (AirAsia MOVE). As of 2025, Sri Lanka had one domestic airline with scheduled flights, Cinnamon Air, flying light aircraft (Wikivoyage). Its winter price guide, which still carried 2025 to 2026 dates when we read it, listed Colombo to Sigiriya from USD 153 (Cinnamon Air).

Where the two cost about the same

A cheap restaurant meal and a beer are almost level. Numbeo has a half-litre of local draught at LKR 745 in Sri Lanka and THB 75 in Thailand, which is USD 2.24 against USD 2.23 (Numbeo). A large Lion Lager ran to around Rs 1,000 in bars and restaurants on Wikivoyage’s 2025 figure (Wikivoyage).

Both are crowd-sourced averages. Numbeo had 1,334 entries for Sri Lanka from 151 contributors over the past year, against 4,383 from 453 for Thailand (Numbeo). They show the general level, not the price at a particular beach bar.

The car and driver: what changes Sri Lanka’s total

Transport moves a Sri Lanka budget more than any other line. Wikivoyage describes hiring a car with a driver as a convenient way to follow an itinerary, sometimes fitting two sites into one day (Wikivoyage).

Our car-with-driver price guide read 15 sellers’ listings on 19 October 2026. Day rates per car started at LKR 15,000 (VAT extra) and went up to USD 117.78, and what each covered varied. At our rate, LKR 15,000 is about USD 45.18 before VAT, or about USD 632 over 14 days. From the table, a three-star room in Kandy and a mid-range dinner for two total about USD 53.08. In Chiang Mai the same pair costs about USD 78.10, so on these medians Sri Lanka comes out about USD 25 a day cheaper. The lowest listed driver rate is bigger than that saving. With a car every day, the couple’s Sri Lankan room, dinner and transport come to about USD 98 before VAT. The Chiang Mai room and dinner come to USD 78, with Thai transport still to add.

The other route is public transport. Trains still didn’t run through from Kandy to Ella when our Kandy to Ella train guide was last checked on 19 October 2026, and we found no newer report on 24 October. Buses and the open rail sections cost a few dollars a ride, and you can mix the two, with buses and trains for the easy legs and a driver for the days with several stops.

Is Thailand cheaper than Sri Lanka for backpackers?

On daily costs, not quite. A backpacker day of a dorm bed, three cheap meals and one beer adds up to about USD 21.83 in Kandy and USD 24.14 in Chiang Mai. That’s about USD 2.32 a day in Sri Lanka’s favour, or about USD 32 over two weeks. The tickets then decide it. Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura cost a foreign adult USD 95 together (Central Cultural Fund). One Category I park adds USD 20 to 25, before the jeep (Gazette 2292/11). So a backpacker who skips the paid sites spends a little less in Sri Lanka. One who wants the Cultural Triangle and a safari spends more than in Thailand, where the big tickets cost far less. Visas and entry costs in 2026

A 30-day tourist ETA has been free for holders of passports from a list of 40 countries since 25 May 2026, with the UK, the US and Australia on it (Sri Lanka ETA). Other nationalities pay USD 50 for a tourist ETA, or USD 20 from South Asian countries (Sri Lanka ETA fees). Everyone still has to get an ETA before arriving. Thailand’s rules changed on 15 September 2026, when a 30-day visa exemption for tourism replaced the 60-day one. The Tourism Authority of Thailand lists 60 countries and territories for it, the UK, the US and Australia among them (Tourism Authority of Thailand). GOV.UK’s advice for British nationals, updated on 12 October 2026, adds that officers may ask for proof of at least THB 10,000 a person, and that every arrival needs a digital arrival card (GOV.UK). So a British tourist on a fortnight’s trip needs no paid visa for either country.

Money on the ground: ATMs, cards and tips

Sri Lanka has ATMs in the major towns, but GOV.UK warns that not all of them accept international cards (GOV.UK). Wikivoyage says only People’s Bank and Bank of Ceylon seem to charge no fee for withdrawals (Wikivoyage). Carry plenty of Rs 50, 100 and 500 notes, Sri Lanka Tourism advises, since small shops often can’t change a big one (Sri Lanka Tourism).

Thai ATMs mostly add a THB 250 fee for foreign cards, according to Wikivoyage’s March 2026 note (Wikivoyage). That’s about USD 7.43 a withdrawal, so fewer, larger withdrawals make sense in both countries.

On tips, a 2024 Sunday Times report quoted Department of Labour officials as saying that tips and service charges aren’t regulated by any law in Sri Lanka (Sunday Times). Each business runs its own system. In Thailand, Wikivoyage says tipping isn’t a local habit, though it is now common in many high-end hotels and tourist restaurants (Wikivoyage).

For tickets, national parks and fast long-distance travel, yes. Sigiriya costs USD 35 against THB 500 for the Grand Palace (Central Cultural Fund; The Grand Palace). For rooms, mid-range dinners and trains, Sri Lanka was cheaper on the figures we read on 24 October 2026.

Is Sri Lanka more expensive than Thailand?

It can be. A trip built around paid sites, safaris and a car and driver every day can cost more in Sri Lanka. The lowest listed driver rate on 19 October 2026 was LKR 15,000 a day before VAT.

How much does a meal cost in Sri Lanka?

At a local eatery, Wikivoyage says, a plate of rice and curry costs between Rs 300 and Rs 500 (Wikivoyage). Numbeo’s average for a cheap restaurant meal was LKR 950, about USD 2.86, in October 2026. A mid-range dinner for two averaged LKR 6,500 (Numbeo).

Which is cheaper for a two-week trip?

Transport and tickets matter more than food. On our table, a backpacker comes out about USD 32 ahead on beds, meals and beer, less than three Cultural Triangle tickets at USD 95. A couple’s room and dinner come out about USD 25 a day cheaper, less than the lowest driver rate.
