Sri Lanka Itinerary 9 Days: 8 Nights, Route and Drive Times

A Sri Lanka itinerary for 9 days and 8 nights: Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, Kandy, Ella and the south coast near Galle, with every drive timed, the October 2026 train position and the ticket prices we checked.

Sri Lanka Itinerary 9 Days: 8 Nights, Route and Drive Times

A Sri Lanka itinerary 9 days long gives you eight nights, enough for the classic first loop at a steady pace. We’d base you near Sigiriya for three nights, then Kandy for one, Ella for two and Weligama or Mirissa for two, with Galle Fort as a day out. Driving on the five moving days adds up to 16 to 19.5 hours. When we checked on 20 October 2026, Kandy had no through train to Ella (Colombo Times), so we plan that day by road. February suits the loop best: it’s the only month in which the four stations we use for its bases all average under 100 mm of rain (WMO climate normals).

Key takeaways

  • Four bases over eight nights: Sigiriya 3, Kandy 1, Ella 2 and Weligama or Mirissa 2. That’s about 715 km and 16 to 19.5 hours between bases, plus two shorter day trips.
  • The third Triangle night pays for Polonnaruwa and an afternoon jeep drive at Minneriya or Kaudulla, where elephants gather in the dry months.
  • On 20 October 2026 Kandy still had no through train to Ella. Go by road, or drive to Nanu Oya and ride the open stretch if you can get a seat.
  • Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla’s caves and the Temple of the Tooth come to LKR 27,840, about USD 83, for one foreign adult on the price lists we read on 20 October 2026. The park and the jeep are extra.

Sri Lanka itinerary 9 days: where you sleep each night

Day 1 is the day you land and day 9 the day you fly. We timed every drive on 20 October 2026 using OpenStreetMap’s route planner. Its figures are for clear roads, so ours are rounded up and match our other pages. Click a time to see its route.

How much driving is that?

The five transfers total about 715 km, or 16 to 19.5 hours. With the day 3 loop and the Galle round trip it’s about 880 km and roughly 20 to 25 hours. Days 5 and 7 are the long ones, four hours or more each on our ranges, and day 7 covers the most distance.

Inland roads in particular can be narrow and bumpy, Wikivoyage warns, with cyclists, walkers and animals on them (Wikivoyage), so we’d finish each drive before dark. Our page on Sri Lanka car hire with driver cost compares published day rates.

Days 1 to 3: three nights in the Cultural Triangle

Shorter routes give it two nights and drop Polonnaruwa.

Day 1: from the airport to Sigiriya

Skip Colombo and drive straight inland from arrivals: 3.5 to 4 hours.

Day 2: Sigiriya rock, then an easy afternoon

Ticket counters open at 7am and shut at 5pm (Central Cultural Fund). The fund counts about 1,200 steps, says the climb takes 1.5 to 2 hours and names early morning and late afternoon as the cooler times (Central Cultural Fund). We’d be at the gate for opening. The frescoes, the museum and photo spots are in our what to do in Sigiriya guide.

After lunch, Pidurangala, the rock just north, stands almost as high at 340 m. Wikivoyage allows 20 to 30 minutes for the climb, which begins in a working temple, so dress for it (Wikivoyage). A gentler option is a village tour, which the same Sigiriya guide counts as a slower half day.

Oura Travel’s own video (19 minutes 9 seconds), uploaded to the company’s channel in July 2025. Its description says it follows a village tour near Sigiriya, with a paddle boat ride, a walk through paddy fields, clay stoves and coconut weaving. Watch on YouTube.

Day 3: Polonnaruwa and an elephant drive

Polonnaruwa became the capital in 1056 AD and stayed the seat of government until the 14th century (Love Sri Lanka). UNESCO inscribed the ancient city in 1982 (Wikipedia). Wikivoyage recommends a bicycle for the ruins, where Gal Vihara is four Buddha images carved into one rock face (Wikivoyage).

The day runs as a loop. Polonnaruwa is 56 km from Sigiriya, 75 to 105 minutes. The Minneriya park gate is 35 km back west, 40 to 50 minutes, and Sigiriya 21 km beyond it, 30 to 40 minutes.

Love Sri Lanka gives two seasons for the elephant gathering: May to September, with about 200 elephants at a time, on its Minneriya page (Love Sri Lanka). Its gathering page puts it in July to October, picks August and September as the peak and suggests going from 3pm to 6pm (Love Sri Lanka). Wikipedia notes that by about September the herds have shifted to the Kaudulla tank (Wikipedia), and most hotels can book a jeep and say which park is better that day (Wikivoyage).

Treat those figures with care. On 27 November 2025 the Daily FT reported on the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society’s case in the Court of Appeal. A gathering put at 402 elephants in September 2017 had shrunk to 20 by September 2021, it said, after unseasonal dry-season releases from the Moragahakanda reservoir kept much of the lakebed under water. In court the authorities undertook to keep the tanks’ natural sequence of water levels, which the society expects to restore the gathering (Daily FT). We found no count for 2026.

Both parks sit in the top fee band of the 2022 wildlife regulations, which allow daytime entry between 6am and 6pm (Gazette 2292/11). A Wikivoyage listing updated in August 2024 put one jeep for two or three people at EUR 160 to 200, without saying what that covers (Wikivoyage), so ask for one all-in figure.

Day 4: Dambulla on the way to Kandy

The cave temple at Dambulla, 19 km from Sigiriya (OpenStreetMap), sits on the Kandy road, so it adds almost no distance. Wikivoyage counts 153 Buddha statues across its five caves, lists hours of 7am to 7pm and warns of a ten-minute climb on stone steps (Wikivoyage).

Kandy’s Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic opens at 5.30am and closes at 8pm, and its evening service starts at 6.30pm. The temple doesn’t admit anyone wearing shorts, a sleeveless top or revealing clothes, though cover-ups are on offer at the entrances, and shoes are left at the booths (Sri Dalada Maligawa). With one night, the evening service is what we’d keep. Add a second night and our Kandy in one day plan shows how to fill the full day, Peradeniya’s botanic gardens among it.

Days 5 and 6: two nights in the hills

By car, or by car and train

By road, Kandy to Ella takes 4 to 5 hours through tea country.

On 2 October 2026 trains from Colombo returned as far as Peradeniya and Gampola (Sunday Times). The unfinished Peradeniya bridge still cut off Kandy, and two stretches further up, from Hatton to Nanu Oya and from Gampola to Nawalapitiya, were still under repair (Colombo Times). Our news search on 20 October found no later word on those gaps. At the Ella end, trains from Nanu Oya to Badulla restarted on 20 June 2026 (Sunday Times), and on 2 October the Colombo Times said they were running normally (Colombo Times).

That makes the train day start with a drive: Kandy to Nanu Oya station, 80 km in 2.5 to 3 hours. Ride from there while the car goes ahead to Ella. Leave Kandy by mid-morning for the 2.30pm train, which our guide lists on every day except Wednesday. Reservations open 30 days before the travel date, and paying online adds 5% (seat reservation FAQ). Seats towards Ella are hard to come by. Our Kandy to Ella train guide has the timetable and fares. When it searched on 19 October 2026, no online seats from Nanu Oya were left on 22 of the next 30 days.

Ella, or Nuwara Eliya first

In Ella, Wikivoyage rates Little Adam’s Peak the easy walk. Reaching the Nine Arch Bridge on foot takes about 45 minutes from town. Ella Rock is harder, roughly two hours up and two back, and its first 1.5 km follow the railway itself (Wikivoyage).

Prefer tea estates? Split the nights. The drive up to Nuwara Eliya takes 2.5 to 3 hours from Kandy, and Nanu Oya station is 8 km from the town (OpenStreetMap), handy for the morning train. By road, Nuwara Eliya to Ella is 2 to 3 hours. The split adds 30 to 60 minutes of driving and takes away your full day in Ella.

Days 7 to 9: Weligama or Mirissa, and Galle Fort

Set off early on day 7: the coast is 3.5 to 4.5 hours away. Weligama’s stilt fishermen perch on poles planted in shallow water off the beach (Wikipedia). Love Sri Lanka’s surf map rates its breaks small, predictable and right for beginners, in season from September through May. Mirissa, 5 km east (OpenStreetMap), gets bigger surf from November to March (Love Sri Lanka). For the bay, the swimming and the seasons, see the Weligama beach guide.

GOV.UK’s Sri Lanka page carries an update of 21 September 2026, still its latest when we read it on 20 October 2026 (GOV.UK). Under the heading “Swimming safety”, GOV.UK’s text runs: “Many beaches in Sri Lanka have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of the year. Get advice from your hotel or tour operator before going in the sea.” Beside it, GOV.UK links holiday water-safety guidance by the Royal Life Saving Society (GOV.UK).

Give day 8 to Galle Fort. The Portuguese built it in 1588, the Dutch fortified it heavily from 1649, and UNESCO inscribed it in 1988 (Wikipedia). From November to April, a whale-watching morning from Mirissa is the alternative. Love Sri Lanka names December to April as Mirissa’s best months, says boats are out by 6am and warns that nothing is guaranteed (Love Sri Lanka).

Day 9’s airport run needs 2.5 to 3 hours. On clear roads the planner gives about 2 hours 15 minutes, and our airport transfers page about 2 hours 40, so we’d book an afternoon or evening flight.

What the tickets come to

Rooms, the car and food depend too much on your choices to price. The table shows what one foreign adult pays, as far as we could confirm it on 20 October 2026.

The four sites come to LKR 27,840, about USD 83 at the fund’s rate of LKR 336 to the dollar (CCF prices). Of the four, only Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa are on the fund’s list, updated 14 October 2026; the temple sets its own fee, and Dambulla’s comes from a 2025 listing. Add the park, USD 20 to 25 for one entry, not a whole day (Gazette 2292/11), and it’s about USD 103 to 108 before the jeep, vehicle charges and taxes. A third-class reserved seat on the regular trains from Nanu Oya was LKR 1,200 when our train guide looked on 19 October 2026.

When to go on this route

On the meteorologists’ calendar the year has four parts. The south-west monsoon blows from May until September. December through February is the north-east monsoon’s turn. Inter-monsoon months sit between them: March and April, and October and November (Department of Meteorology). For this loop we took one WMO station near each base and its 1991 to 2020 averages.

StationNearFeb rainOct rain
Maha IlluppallamaSigiriya, 38 km82 mm, 4.4 days270 mm, 13.8 days
KatugastotaKandy, 4.5 km78 mm, 6.1 days303 mm, 18.1 days
BandarawelaElla, 9 km96 mm, 10.3 days347 mm, 22.3 days
GalleWeligama, 24 km71 mm, 5.8 days345 mm, 18.2 days

Distances are straight-line, and a rain day here is any day logging 1 mm or more (WMO climate normals).

February is the month to aim for, because no other month keeps all four stations under 100 mm. In January, Katugastota tops it, and Bandarawela does in both January and March. October is the wettest month at three of the four stations, and November at Maha Illuppallama. From May to September the pattern turns against this loop: 21 to 113 mm a month at Maha Illuppallama, but 162 to 316 mm at Galle (WMO climate normals). For those months, our Sri Lanka round trip guide sets out loops that end on another coast.

Is nine days the right length for you?

A 9 day Sri Lanka itinerary like this one suits a first visit taken slowly, with at least two nights at three of the four bases. Yala, Anuradhapura, the north and the east coast wait for another trip.

A selfie of seven smiling people seated in the open back of a vehicle under trees, with another person facing away behind them and a motorbike and flat green fields beyond
Seven people grin for a selfie from the back of an open vehicle on a country track.

With a week, our 7-day itinerary keeps Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and one coast night, with no Polonnaruwa on its main loop. With a day more, the 10-day itinerary trades the extra Triangle night for a safari park and gives the beach longer.

Questions about 9 days in Sri Lanka

Is 9 days enough for Sri Lanka?

Yes, for the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, one hill base and the south coast. The loop above drives 16 to 19.5 hours between bases and gives most places two nights. Nine days won’t stretch to the north, the east coast or a safari night too.

What is the best route for 9 days in Sri Lanka?

We’d run it clockwise as above: three nights at Sigiriya, then Kandy, Ella and the south coast. The long drives land on days 5 and 7, while the Kandy day and the airport run are the shortest, 2.5 to 3 hours each.

Can you do the Kandy to Ella train on a 9-day trip?

Not from Kandy on 20 October 2026. The newest report on the repairs that we found, from 2 October, listed three stretches between Kandy and Nanu Oya still shut or under repair (Colombo Times). Drive to Nanu Oya instead and board there if seats are free, booking the day sales open.

When is the best time for a 9 day Sri Lanka itinerary?

February, on the four stations’ averages, then January and March. Taken together, the four stations are wettest in October and November.
