Sri Lanka in May is a changeover month. The south-west monsoon season starts in May, bringing heavy rain to the south-western lowlands and the western slopes of the hill country (Department of Meteorology), while the east coast and the Cultural Triangle stay much drier (WMO climate normals). So point a May trip north and east: Sigiriya and the ancient cities, then Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay. Vesak, the Buddhist festival of the May full moon, falls on 19 May in 2027 (Central Bank of Sri Lanka). We’re on the south coast ourselves, in Weligama, and May is the month we’d send you the other way.

What’s the weather like in Sri Lanka in May?
Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology splits the year into four seasons: the first inter-monsoon (March and April), the south-west monsoon (May to September), the second inter-monsoon (October and November) and the north-east monsoon (December to February) (Department of Meteorology). May itself is a month of two halves. The inter-monsoon’s light, variable winds and evening thundershowers usually last until about the middle of the month; then the south-westerlies arrive, soaking the windward slopes and the south-west while the leeward east gets little (Wikipedia). Colombo and Galle are wetter in May than in April or June. The east coast gets rain on about four days in the whole month, and Trincomalee and Pottuvil are the hottest stations in the table.
Sri Lanka weather in May and June
If your route is the east and the Cultural Triangle, Sri Lanka in June is drier still: Anuradhapura falls from 94 mm to 15 mm and Pottuvil from 48 mm to 14 mm (WMO climate normals). The south-west and the high hills don’t improve much. Colombo and Galle still average 15 to 17 rain days in June, and Kandy and Nuwara Eliya get a few more rain days in June than in May. Around Ella the rain does ease: Badulla and Bandarawela, the stations either side of it, both get roughly half as much rain in June as in May (WMO climate normals).
Where to go in Sri Lanka in May
Trincomalee and Pigeon Island
Trincomalee is best in its dry season, April to September (Wikivoyage). Its beaches sit behind a large offshore reef and stay shallow a long way out, so they’re better for swimming than the exposed beaches around Batticaloa (Wikivoyage). Snorkelling season at Pigeon Island National Park runs from May to September (Love Sri Lanka). Turtles and black-tip reef sharks still turn up there, but most of the island’s coral had died by 2025 (Wikivoyage).
Pasikudah
Pasikudah is the stop for easy swimming. Love Sri Lanka calls its shallow reef shoreline one of the longest in the world, with gentle waves you can wade out through (Love Sri Lanka). It’s the beach we’d pick for families, or for anyone who’d rather swim than surf.
Arugam Bay, where the surf season is getting going
Arugam Bay’s surf season runs from April to September (Love Sri Lanka), so by May it’s under way but not yet at its busiest; Wikivoyage says the town fills up in July and August, when the waves are best (Wikivoyage). Beginners learn at Baby Point or Elephant Rock, and Main Point is for experienced surfers. Kumana National Park is about an hour and a half’s drive away, and from April to July its swamps fill with tens of thousands of migrant birds (Love Sri Lanka). The Cultural Triangle
Inland, Anuradhapura’s average rainfall drops from 180 mm in April to 94 mm in May, but average highs sit near 34°C (WMO climate normals), so climb early. Ticket counters at the heritage sites open at 7am (Central Cultural Fund); be at Sigiriya for opening and keep the hot afternoon for a swim. Safaris in May
Wilpattu, 30 km west of Anuradhapura, is popular from February to October (Wikipedia). Udawalawe has a herd of about 250 elephants thought to live there all year (Wikipedia). Minneriya’s elephant gathering comes later; it’s best in August and September (Love Sri Lanka). What’s harder in May
The south-west beaches
May isn’t the month we’d choose for a beach week on our own coast. Galle averages 17 rain days in May (see the table above), and whale watching off Mirissa has finished: its season runs from November to April, when the sea is calmest (Love Sri Lanka). If you do come south, remember the sea on the south and west coasts turns rough in the south-west monsoon, so swim only where lifeguards say it’s safe. Hill-country hikes and Adam’s Peak
The monsoon brings heavy rain to the western slopes of the hills (Department of Meteorology), and the table above shows Nuwara Eliya averaging 13 rain days in May. Adam’s Peak’s pilgrimage season runs from Unduvap Poya in December to Vesak Poya in May. Outside the season the path is unlit, so night climbers carry a torch, and the peak spends much of May to October under cloud (Sri Pada). In 2027 that means climbing by 19 May. Trains to the hills
When Cyclone Ditwah hit in late 2025, it damaged about 70% of the railway (Wikivoyage). Services from Nanu Oya to Badulla, through Ella, resumed on 20 June 2026 (Onlanka). On 6 September 2026, trains still weren’t running between Rambukkana, in the lowlands west of Kandy, and Nanu Oya in the hills, although services from Colombo to Peradeniya, near Kandy, were due back in October (Newsfirst). The line into the hills was still closed when we looked in late September 2026. Confirm with Sri Lanka Railways before booking around the line.
Vesak in May 2027
Vesak commemorates the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death, and it’s held at the full moon of Vesak, a lunar month that normally lines up with May (Wikipedia). In 2027, Vesak Full Moon Poya Day is Wednesday 19 May, and Thursday 20 May is a public holiday as well (Central Bank of Sri Lanka).
Coloured lanterns called Vesak kuudu hang along streets and outside homes, and electrically lit pandals called thoranas go up, mainly in Colombo, Kandy and Galle (Wikipedia). Each thorana illustrates a Jataka tale, one of the stories of the Buddha’s previous births (Wikipedia). Roadside stalls called dansala hand out free drinks, ice cream and food to anyone passing by (Wikipedia).
Alcohol can’t be sold or drunk in public on poya days (Wikivoyage). During Vesak week the sale of alcohol and fresh meat is usually banned, and Colombo fills with people from across the island (Wikipedia), so book hotels early for 19 and 20 May.
Crowds and prices in May
May falls between the south-west coast’s high season, roughly December to April (Sri Lanka weather by month), and the July and August rush at Arugam Bay (Wikivoyage), which our Sri Lanka in July guide covers. Outside Vesak week you’re travelling between those two busy spells, but hotels set their own seasonal rates, so compare a few dates before you book.

From Ella it’s usually 5 to 6 hours back to the airport (OpenStreetMap), so book an evening flight or spend the last night near the airport. All foreign visitors need an ETA before flying; since 25 May 2026 it has been free for citizens of 40 countries, the UK, the US and Australia among them (official ETA site). The page gave no end date for the scheme when we checked, but confirm it before you apply.

Is May a good month for a Sri Lanka holiday?
It is if you build the trip around the east coast and the Cultural Triangle, which are much drier than the south-west in May. Save a south-coast beach holiday for December to April.
Does it rain every day in Sri Lanka in May?
No. The east coast averages about four rain days in the month, and even Colombo and Galle, the wettest places in our table, stay dry on nearly half of May’s days (WMO climate normals).
Can you climb Adam’s Peak in May?
Until Vesak Poya, yes: that’s when the pilgrimage season ends, and in 2027 it’s 19 May. After that the path is unlit and the summit is often cloudy (Sri Pada), so a sunrise view is less likely.
