Sri Lanka tour packages put several services under one price. On the five package pages we read on 13 October 2026, that price covered transport, a bed for every night, breakfast on most or all mornings and a named list of visits. Flights from home, most lunches and dinners, the visa, travel insurance and tips sit outside the price of the Sri Lanka tour packages we sell, and that page says so. It also names what moves a quote: the season, the hotels and how many of you travel. So compare two quotes line by line, never total against total.
Key takeaways
- On the five pages we read, one price covered transport, beds, breakfast and listed visits. Our tour list leaves out flights, most other meals, the visa, insurance and tips.
- A Sigiriya ticket is USD 35. Yala’s entry fee in the 2022 gazette is USD 25 a foreign adult in the tourist season, before the service fee, the jeep and taxes.
- “Package” covers four products. Private and tailor-made routes can be changed, and a group departure mostly can’t.
- In early October 2026 no train ran through from Kandy to Ella, so ask what a quoted train ride means.
- A land-only trip bought direct from a company in Sri Lanka sits outside ATOL, the UK’s flight-package scheme. Ask about your deposit and buy insurance.
What a Sri Lanka tour package includes
A package, in the European Union’s consumer wording, is a combination of two or more types of travel service for the same trip, such as transport and accommodation (Your Europe). The five pages we read were one of ours and four group tours from two international firms, set out in the cost section below.
Take Scenic Sri Lanka, a private eight-day route of ours. Its page puts these inside the price: an air-conditioned vehicle of your own with an English-speaking driver-guide, seven nights of hotels with breakfast and entrance fees for the listed sites. A jeep and tracker for two safaris, a train ride, bottled water, government taxes and service charges are in as well. The same page lists what is out: international and domestic flights, lunches and dinners, visa fees, travel insurance, tips and personal spending.
A car with a driver is a smaller bundle. On our private car with driver page it takes in fuel, expressway tolls, parking, and a room and meals for the driver. That page lists hotels, entrance tickets, safari jeeps and site guides as yours to pay directly.

The four kinds of tour packages in Sri Lanka
Sellers use the word for four different products, and a quote for one can’t be set against a quote for another. The “suits” column is our view.
| Kind | Suits, in our view | Fixed | You can change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Escorted group tour | Solo travellers and pairs who want company and a set price | Dates, route, hotels, group size | Little: optional activities, sometimes your own room |
| Private tour with a car and driver-guide | Couples, families and friends who want their own pace | Vehicle, driver-guide, booked hotels | Order of days, stops, timings |
| Tailor-made itinerary | Fixed dates, a special interest or an unusual route | Nothing until you confirm | Route, length, hotel level |
| Day excursions on an independent trip | Travellers who book their own beds and transport | One day: pick-up, visit, drop-off | The rest of the trip |
The group tours we read cap the party at 12 on Intrepid Travel’s pages and 15 on G Adventures’ pages, and G Adventures lists a room of your own as a paid extra. We sell the last three kinds. Our tour list is labelled “Private, never a group tour” and says nothing is confirmed until you’re happy with the plan. Its seven day trips are single days out. If you’d rather fix the route first and price it second, our Sri Lanka itinerary planner takes you through it in that order.
Included or not: 12 lines to check on any quote
Hold a quote for any Sri Lanka travel package against these 12 lines. The middle column shows how one real page, ours, answers them, and where even a detailed list goes quiet.
| Line | Our Scenic Sri Lanka page | Ask any seller |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle and fuel | Vehicle in; fuel not itemised | Is fuel in, whatever the route becomes? |
| Driver’s food and lodging | Not itemised | Who pays for the driver’s room and meals? |
| Tolls and parking | Not itemised | Are expressway tolls and site parking in? |
| Hotels and meals | Seven nights with breakfast; lunches and dinners out | Which hotels, which room type, which meals? |
| Site tickets | In, for the listed sites | Which sites, by name? |
| Safari jeep and park fees | Jeep and tracker in; park fee not named separately | Is the park’s entry fee in as well as the jeep? |
| Train tickets | One train ride in | Which stations, which class, and what if no train runs? |

Site tickets and park fees have published prices, so you can check those two yourself.
Site tickets
The Central Cultural Fund sells the tickets for the big ancient sites. On its price list, last updated on 10 October 2026, a full ticket is USD 35 for Sigiriya and USD 30 for either Polonnaruwa or Anuradhapura (Central Cultural Fund). A route with all three comes to USD 95 an adult, so “entrance fees not included” is a line worth pricing.
Safari jeep and park fees
A safari has two costs: what the park charges and what the jeep’s owner charges. The park’s side comes from regulations gazetted on 8 August 2022. Yala, Udawalawe, Minneriya, Kaudulla and Wilpattu are among nine Category I reserves, where a foreign adult pays USD 25 for a daytime visit in the tourist season and USD 20 outside it. A child of 6 to 12 pays USD 15 or USD 10. Which months count as the tourist season is for the department’s Director-General to say. The same schedules set a USD 10 service fee per vehicle for a foreign group’s daytime visit and Rs 300 for a jeep’s entry, and make every charge subject to government taxes (Gazette No. 2292/11).
On those schedules, two adults sharing a jeep in the tourist season owe the park USD 60 and Rs 300 before tax. Treat that as a floor: the schedule dates from 2022 and taxes come on top. Ask the seller what it has allowed per person for the park. We found no later amendment in the United Nations Environment Programme’s law database on 13 October 2026 (UNEP). The Department of Wildlife Conservation offers day-visitor permits online, and its website printed no fee table that we could find (Department of Wildlife Conservation). The jeep’s own hire is a separate sum, usually split between the passengers (Wikivoyage).
Tips and taxes
No Sri Lankan law covers tips or service charges, Department of Labour officials said in a Sunday Times report of June 2024 (Sunday Times). The standard rate of VAT went up to 18% on 1 January 2024 (Inland Revenue). Ask whether it and any hotel service charge are inside the quoted figure.

What a Sri Lanka tour package costs in 2026
We print none of our own prices here and won’t invent an average. A quote moves with your dates, hotels and group size, so each route on our tour list carries its own current figure. To weigh a package against doing it yourself, use our Sri Lanka budget travel guide, which prices buses, trains, tickets and food one by one.
One official yardstick: the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority’s review of 2025 puts average expenditure per day at USD 171.74 in the first seven months of that year and USD 148.26 in the last five. It marks both as provisional and bases them on surveys of inbound tourists (SLTDA). That is every kind of visitor on every kind of trip, so it isn’t the price of a package.
These are four group departures as their sellers’ own pages listed them on 13 October 2026. The table reports listings. It isn’t our judgement of any tour, and the rows run in order of length.
| Tour and seller | Length | Listed from | The listing includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sri Lanka Express, G Adventures | 8 days | USD 1,119, reduced from USD 1,599 | 7 nights, 7 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 3 dinners |
| Classic Sri Lanka, Intrepid Travel (UK site) | 8 days | GBP 1,168, reduced from GBP 1,460 | 7 hotel nights, 7 breakfasts, 2 lunches |
| Sri Lanka Encompassed, G Adventures | 14 days | USD 1,854, reduced from USD 2,649 | 13 hotel nights, 13 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 1 dinner |
| Best of Sri Lanka, Intrepid Travel (UK site) | 15 days | GBP 1,887, reduced from GBP 2,220 | 14 nights, 12 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners |
G Adventures’ pages tell travellers to allow USD 115 to 150 for meals not included on the eight-day trip and USD 225 to 295 on the 14-day one. They also say international flights are generally not included and that travel insurance is compulsory. Read any “from” price the same way: find the meals, flights and fees it leaves out before you set it beside another.
What 2026 changed: trains, Yala, fuel and the ETA
The hill-country train
Cyclone Ditwah wrecked parts of the hill-country line in November 2025. Trains from Colombo returned only on 2 October 2026, and only as far as Peradeniya and Gampola, short of Kandy, because a bridge wasn’t finished (Sunday Times). Three days later a derailment stopped them until the afternoon, and that evening more earth fell on the track near Peradeniya (Newswire). Two sections further up were still being repaired on 2 October, the Hatton to Nanu Oya stretch and the one from Gampola to Nawalapitiya. Beyond them, trains ran on from Nanu Oya to Badulla, the stretch through Ella (Colombo Times).
So in early October 2026 nobody could ride one train from Kandy through to Ella, and a quote that still sells that journey is out of date. The line’s state, section by section, is in our Kandy to Ella train guide. Our own Scenic Sri Lanka page lists a train ride on the day out of Kandy, so put the question to us too: which stations, and what replaces it?
Yala
Blocks 1 and 2 of the park shut on 14 September 2026 in dry weather (Ada Derana). On 12 October the Daily Mirror reported that the park authorities would reopen “Zones 1 and 1A” at 6am on 16 October, with bungalows and campsites to follow on 1 November (Daily Mirror). Ada Derana gave the same date the next day for Blocks 1 and 2 (Ada Derana). It was still an announcement when we checked on 13 October, so confirm it. Ask, too, what a package swaps in if a park shuts.
Fuel
The UK’s travel advice, last updated on 21 September 2026, says fuel purchases are limited and each vehicle gets a weekly allowance. It adds that the government has announced special arrangements for hotels and tour operators (GOV.UK). Ask how a seller’s vehicles are covered.
The ETA
Every foreign national must hold an ETA before landing. For citizens of 40 countries it has been free for a 30-day stay since 25 May 2026, and the list includes the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand (official ETA site). For other passports the online fee is USD 50, or USD 20 for South Asian countries (ETA fees). A “visa fee” line on a quote may be out of date for you.
How long should a package be?
In 2025 visitors who came for a holiday stayed an average of 8.7 days (SLTDA). The routes on our tour list run from a single day to 21 days.
The legs and their drive times are in our Sri Lanka itinerary for 5 days and the 7-day itinerary. Use them to test whether a quoted route is rushed.
How to compare two Sri Lanka tour package quotes
- Put both on the same footing first: the same dates, the same number of nights and people, and a price per person in one currency.
- Mark each of the 12 lines as in, out or unclear on both quotes. Send the unclear ones back and ask for the answers in writing.
- Price what is out. Add the site tickets and park fees above for the places on your route, then a sum for meals and tips.
- Compare hotels by name and room type. A star rating won’t tell you which room you’ll get.
- Trace each route on a map. Wikivoyage warns of needless backtracking that stretches a trip and its price, and of shop stops nobody asked for (Wikivoyage).
- Read the deposit, balance and cancellation terms, then look the seller up. Sri Lanka Tourism keeps a searchable register of travel agents, and you can search it for any company, ours included.
Only then compare the totals: a lower one can simply mean more lines left out.
Who protects your money?
A flight-inclusive package sold in the UK must come with ATOL protection: a refund, or a flight home, if the firm stops trading (ATOL). UK law also makes a package organiser liable for every service in the package, whoever performs it (Package Travel Regulations 2018), and EU rules give package buyers insolvency cover too (Your Europe). A land-only tour bought direct from a company in Sri Lanka sits outside ATOL, which is protection for “a package trip that includes a flight” (ATOL). Our own tour pages list international flights as not included, so they are trips of that kind. So ask any local seller, us included, in writing, what happens to your deposit if it cancels or closes, and run the checks in our guide to Sri Lanka tour operators. Buy travel insurance too, which ATOL says is a different thing and the UK advises for Sri Lanka (GOV.UK).
Questions about Sri Lanka tour packages
What is included in a Sri Lanka tour package?
On the five pages we read: transport, a bed each night, breakfast and a named list of visits. Our own tour list adds bottled water, local taxes and the entrance fees for sites on the route. It leaves out flights, the visa, most lunches and dinners, tips and insurance.
How much does a Sri Lanka tour package cost?
It depends on the season, the hotels, the group size and what is left out. On 13 October 2026 four group tours of 8 to 15 days were listed from USD 1,119 to USD 1,854 and from GBP 1,168 to GBP 1,887. G Adventures says international flights are generally not in its prices. For our private routes, see each tour’s page for the current price.
Are flights included in Sri Lanka holiday packages?
Often not. Our tour pages list international flights as not included, and G Adventures says the same of its tours. Sri Lanka holiday packages sold with flights by a UK company are a different product, and the ATOL rules above apply to them.
Ask us for a quote you can check
We’re Oura Travel, a Weligama company on Sri Lanka’s south coast, and every route we sell is private. Tell us when you’re coming, how many of you there are and which lines you want inside the price, through our contact page. Then hold our answer against the same 12 lines as everyone else’s.
