Weligama surf lessons are mostly beginner lessons. Love Sri Lanka’s 2022 surf map says the bay caters mainly to the novice surfer: the breaks are small and predictable and the sea bed is soft (Love Sri Lanka). Depending on the source, the season starts as early as September and ends as late as May. On the ten surf school websites we read on 6 October 2026, a beginner lesson of 60 to 75 minutes was listed from $15 or EUR 17. Private lessons of 90 minutes were listed at LKR 6,000, $50 and LKR 15,000. Oura Travel is based in Weligama, and our part is the drive.
Key takeaways
- Nine of the ten school websites give a lesson length, from 60 minutes to about 2 hours. Stated ratios run from 2 to 5 students per instructor.
- Eight of the ten showed a price on 6 October 2026. Beginner lessons of 60 to 75 minutes started at $15 or EUR 17, and private 90-minute lessons were listed at LKR 6,000, $50 and LKR 15,000.
- Seven name the International Surfing Association (ISA) when they describe their instructors. The ISA’s public directory lists current certificates by name.
- Love Sri Lanka’s surf map says the season often runs from September to May. Wikivoyage and three schools point to November to April.
- GOV.UK’s warning: the surf or rip tides at many of Sri Lanka’s beaches are dangerous at certain times of the year. Its instruction: get advice at your hotel, or from your tour operator, before you go in the sea.
Who Weligama surf lessons suit
Love Sri Lanka is the tourism promotion bureau’s site. Its 2020 page on the beach has a section headed “Perfect for the Beginner Surfer”, and says surf schools sit all along the sand, hire out boards and teach (Love Sri Lanka). On Wikivoyage, the country page picks Weligama as the south coast’s place for beginners (Wikivoyage).
The town’s own Wikivoyage page, last edited in August 2025, adds two cautions. The water can hold a lot of surfers in high season, beginners above all. It calls the current “quite strong and unpredictable”, and tells readers to “swim with caution” (Wikivoyage).
Weligama surf lesson prices at 10 surf schools
We opened each school’s own website on 6 October 2026 and copied what it lists for a beginner. The table covers ten schools whose own pages loaded and listed a beginner lesson, not every school on the bay.

| Weligama Surf Center | Private beginner lesson, 1 hour 30 minutes, paid on site | LKR 6,000 | 6 Oct 2026 |
The table reports listings in alphabetical order. It is not a ranking, and we are not recommending any school in it. Prices are in the currency each page uses, unconverted, and a bare dollar sign is copied as the page shows it. The one exchange rate on these pages is Weligama Surf Center’s: 6,000 rupees as about 20 US dollars (Weligama Surf Center).
Lucky’s booking page showed lesson times but no price before a slot is chosen (Lucky’s). Its school page says a lesson lasts about 2 hours and its FAQ about 1.5 (Lucky’s).
What the schools say about instructors, ages and swimming
Seven of the ten websites named the ISA on 6 October 2026 when describing their instructors: Ama, Be Cool, Chill & Surf, Freedom, Kuma, Lucky’s and The Surf Club (Ama; Lucky’s). At Kuma and The Surf Club the claim is about one named instructor. Freedom adds that all its instructors are lifesaving trained (Freedom). These are the schools’ own statements, and we haven’t checked any of them.
Minimum ages differ. Lucky’s takes nobody under 16 (Lucky’s). Ama describes lessons from age 4, with at most 2 children per instructor up to age 6 (Ama). Be Cool says children under 8 should have a parent or guardian with them on the water (Be Cool).
On swimming, the schools’ answers differ. Ama says its group lessons take place in waist-deep water and that you needn’t know how to swim (Ama). Chill & Surf puts it this way: “If you can swim comfortably, you can learn to surf” (Chill & Surf). Be Cool says you needn’t be a strong swimmer, but recommends swimming lessons first if you’re new to swimming (Be Cool).
On the pages we read, only Lucky’s mentions travel insurance: its FAQ says camp guests must have a policy that covers surfing (Lucky’s).
Lessons listed on booking platforms
These four listings loaded for us on 6 October 2026, priced in US dollars.
| Listing | As described | Price shown | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| GetYourGuide: Beginner Surf Lesson with Local Instructor | 3 hours with pick-up, of which 2 hours surfing. Small group, board, rash guard. 4.9 from 39 reviews | From $10 per person | 6 Oct 2026 |
| GetYourGuide: ISA-certified Surf Lessons with Professional Photography | 1.5 hours, private or small group. Photos only in a USD 90 option. 4.7 from 12 reviews | From $22 per person | 6 Oct 2026 |

| Expedia: Ride a Wave Surf School | 1 hour 30 minutes | $22 per adult, taxes and fees included | 6 Oct 2026 |
The review scores are the platforms’ own. GetYourGuide states on its results page that it orders activities by several factors, and the revenue they generate is one of them (GetYourGuide). The first two listings above are marked not suitable for non-swimmers.
How a first surf lesson runs
By the schools’ accounts, you start on the sand. Lucky’s opens with a warm-up and theory on the beach: ocean safety, wave timing and paddling (Lucky’s). Chill & Surf allows 15 minutes for the same, with the pop-up practised on dry land. It then describes about 70 minutes in the water, though it lists the programme at 60 (Chill & Surf).
In the water, Kuma says its instructors steady your board on the first wave (Kuma). Total beginners at Ama start on soft boards, then move to fibreglass (Ama).
The ratios the schools state run from 2 students per instructor at Freedom to 5 at Lucky’s and on Ama’s group lesson page (Ama). Surfing England’s rules for its registered schools, a 2017 document, set a ceiling of 8 novices per coach. They also require soft boards with rubberised or plastic fins for absolute beginners (Surfing England). Those rules bind schools in England, not here.
Where the surf schools in Weligama are
OpenStreetMap shows six surf schools side by side on the beach in the middle of the bay: Freedom, Kuma, Lucky’s, Ama, Samaru and BeCool. We measured them on 6 October 2026: the six lie 674 m to 962 m east of Weligama railway station in a straight line (OpenStreetMap). Five are in our table. Samaru isn’t, as we found no website for it.
The map is not a full list. The table’s other five schools weren’t on it by name, and it tagged at least six other points around the bay as surf shops or surf schools. Our Weligama beach guide measures the whole bay and says what sits at each end.
When to learn to surf in Weligama
Sources disagree on the season. The schools’ lines are as read on 6 October 2026.

Galle, 24 km to the west, has the closest station with 1991 to 2020 normals. There, January averages 87 mm of rain, February 71 mm and March 90 mm, and no other month is under 100 mm. October is the wettest, with 345 mm on 18 rain days (WMO climate normals).
When the south coast’s season ends, the east coast’s is under way. Our best time to surf in Sri Lanka page goes coast by coast, and our Arugam Bay surf guide takes the eastern breaks one at a time.
Board hire, and where to go after the first lessons
Wikivoyage’s only dated board price is marked 2019: Rs 400 per hour, or Rs 1,500 for the day (Wikivoyage). On 6 October 2026 Liza and Weligama Surf Center both listed LKR 1,000 an hour (Liza; Weligama Surf Center). For a full day, Liza lists LKR 3,000 and The Surf Club LKR 5,000 (The Surf Club). Freedom lists $2 per board per hour and Chill & Surf EUR 4 for 65 minutes (Freedom; Chill & Surf).
For surfers with more experience, Love Sri Lanka points to Midigama and calls it a 10-minute drive (Love Sri Lanka). We ran the route through the planner: 5 km, usually 10 to 15 minutes (route).

Safety: what the official advice says
The Sri Lanka travel advice on GOV.UK carries an update date of 21 September 2026 and was marked as still current on 6 October (GOV.UK). Its “Swimming safety” entry is two sentences and a link. The first is a warning about “many beaches in Sri Lanka”: they “have dangerous surf or rip tides”, it says, “at certain times of the year”. The second is an instruction. “Get advice from your hotel or tour operator”, it reads, “before going in the sea.” The link reads “water safety on holiday” and goes to the Royal Life Saving Society (GOV.UK).
Australia’s Smartraveller page for Sri Lanka, updated on 14 August 2026, has a passage headed “Tours and adventure activities”. “Transport and tour operators”, it begins, “don’t always follow safety and maintenance standards. This includes adventure activities, such as water sports.” For anyone planning an adventure activity, it then lists four steps (Smartraveller):
- check if your travel insurance covers it
- check operators are trained
- ask about and insist on minimum safety requirements
- always use available safety gear, such as life jackets or seatbelts
It ends: “If you don’t see proper safety gear or you’re not sure about the company’s safety, choose another provider or don’t do the activity at all.”
The same page has its own swimming entry: “Swimming conditions at some beaches are unsafe, and there can be strong rips. Lifesaving services are rare and not to the same standard as Australia. Take appropriate precautions.” It adds that saltwater crocodiles live in some places and have killed people. It says to get local advice before you swim, and never to swim in rivers or lagoons (Smartraveller).
School websites use warmer words. On 6 October 2026 one called the bay one of the safest places in the world to learn to surf, and another called it one of the most forgiving beach breaks in Asia (Chill & Surf; Be Cool). Those are sellers’ words, and neither advisory says anything like it.
On insurance, GOV.UK says cover should include “your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency” (GOV.UK). Smartraveller says to check which activities your policy covers and warns that some cost extra (Smartraveller).
An instructor’s ISA certificate can be looked up. The ISA says its Level 1 course is for instructors of beginners and early intermediates. Its public directory is updated every 24 hours, it says, and a certificate missing from it is expired or invalid (ISA). The directory lists a name, a country, a level and an expiry date. On 6 October 2026, 22 of its rows read Surf Level 1 Instructor with Sri Lanka as the country, and 5 read Surf Level 2 Coach.
That count says nothing about any school named here. The page doesn’t say whether the country means nationality or place of work, or where anyone teaches. To check a claim, ask the school for the instructor’s name and look it up.
For dated local reports from this bay in 2026, read the swimming section of our beach guide.
Getting to Weligama with boards
From Bandaranaike airport the route planner gives 171 km, a drive that usually takes 2.5 to 3 hours (route). Our page on Colombo airport to Weligama compares a private transfer, a taxi, the bus and the train for that trip.
Our airport transfers page says boards up to 7 feet lie flat inside the high-roof vans and longboards go on a padded roof rack. It asks for the board bag length when you book.
