A Sri Lanka itinerary 5 days long has four nights, which is room for three bases at most. The loop we’d plan runs coast first: one night in Unawatuna or Galle Fort, two in Ella and one in Kandy, with 12.5 to 15.5 hours on the road in all. It goes that way round for a 2026 reason. When we searched the railway’s booking site on 13 October 2026 it listed no train from Kandy to Ella, yet it had seats from Ella down to Nanu Oya on every date we tried (seat reservations). Go from January to March if you can, when Galle’s station records its lowest rainfall of the year (WMO climate normals).
Key takeaways
- Five days means four nights: one on the south coast, two in Ella, one in Kandy. The four road legs total about 595 km, usually 12.5 to 15.5 hours.
- Searched on 13 October 2026, the railway’s booking site showed no train from Kandy to Ella either way, but Ella to Nanu Oya on all 10 dates.
- May to September brings the south-west monsoon, so we’d go to Sigiriya and Kandy instead: three legs and 8.5 to 10.5 hours of driving.
- Four nights in one south-coast base cuts the airport runs to 5 to 6 hours in all, before any day trips.
The 5 day route at a glance
All of these legs come from OpenStreetMap’s route planner, run on 13 October 2026. It assumes nobody else is on the road, so we rounded every time up and printed nothing below its own figure.
| Day | Night in | What you do | Drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Unawatuna or Galle Fort | Land, head south, Galle’s ramparts at dusk | Airport to Unawatuna: 2.5 to 3 hours, about 150 km. |
| 2 | Ella | Galle Fort early, then the long climb inland | Unawatuna to Ella: 3.5 to 4 hours, about 200 km. |
| 3 | Ella | A walk up Little Adam’s Peak; the Nine Arch Bridge | No transfer. |
| 4 | Kandy | The train to Nanu Oya, then the Temple of the Tooth | Ella to Kandy: 4 to 5 hours, about 135 km. |
| 5 | Fly home | A morning in Kandy | Kandy to the airport: 2.5 to 3.5 hours, about 110 km. |
Add the four legs and you get about 595 km and 12.5 to 15.5 hours in the car. Ride the train on day 4 and the total falls to 11 to 13.5.
Why coast first?
- Seats from Ella to Nanu Oya were listed on all 10 dates we searched, against 5 of 10 from Nanu Oya to Ella (seat reservations).
- About 140 of the 150 km to Unawatuna are expressway on the planner’s route (OpenStreetMap), which we’d pick over a hill road.
- Ella is the nearer hill base: Nuwara Eliya to a west-coast beach such as Bentota, for example, is about 210 km, usually 4.5 to 5 hours (OpenStreetMap), an hour more than Ella to Unawatuna.
5 days in Sri Lanka, day by day
Day 1: the airport to the south coast
For Galle and Unawatuna, our airport transfers page prints a drive time of 2 hours 15 minutes. The planner’s figure on empty roads is about 2 hours, and for planning we’d allow 2.5 to 3. Unawatuna is 5 km from Galle (Wikivoyage), and our Unawatuna beach guide has the swimming advice to read before you get in the water.
Galle Fort is why the loop starts here. It’s a 16th-century Portuguese foundation and, on UNESCO’s list, the best example of a fortified city of European build in South and South-East Asia (UNESCO).
Land after dark and we’d sleep near the airport, then leave at first light. The fort becomes a two-hour stop on the way to Ella.

Day 2: Galle Fort, then up to Ella
See the fort early and leave by late morning. Ella is usually 3.5 to 4 hours away, and roughly half of the 200 km is still expressway (OpenStreetMap).
Leave before dawn and the day can go to elephants instead. Udawalawe National Park is about 130 km from Unawatuna, usually 2 to 2.5 hours. It’s open from 6am to 6pm, and Love Sri Lanka names early morning and late evening as the best safari times (Love Sri Lanka). A jeep tour takes several hours (Wikivoyage).
From the park gate to Ella the planner’s route is about 120 km, usually 3 to 3.5 hours. Run the other way, Ella to the park, it returns about 90 km, the figure in our 7-day post. That’s 5 to 6 hours of driving plus the jeep.
Day 3: Ella
Two walks fill the one day with no transfer. Little Adam’s Peak lies east of the centre, and Wikivoyage calls the hike relatively easy. The Nine Arch Bridge is down the same road, 45 minutes from town on foot (Wikivoyage).
Bandarawela’s weather station, 9 km from Ella in a straight line, averages 7 to 8 rain days a month from June to August and 22 to 24 in October and November (WMO climate normals).

Day 4: the train to Nanu Oya, then Kandy
The rail day runs downhill. On each of the 10 dates we searched, the booking site listed a morning and an afternoon train from Ella to Nanu Oya (seat reservations). Take the morning one, which the site showed reaching Nanu Oya around midday, and send the bags by road.
Our private car with driver page describes a Kandy to Ella train day: the driver carries the bags by road and you meet again on the platform at Ella. Ask for the reverse, with the car waiting at Nanu Oya. From Nanu Oya station it’s about 80 km to Kandy, usually 2.5 to 3 hours. Without seats, drive the whole way.
In Kandy, aim for the evening service at the Temple of the Tooth, from 6.30pm until 8pm; its FAQ says visitors in shorts or sleeveless clothes are not permitted (Sri Dalada Maligawa). For a longer stay, Kandy in one day sets out the temple, Kandy Lake and the botanic gardens at Peradeniya hour by hour.
Day 5: Kandy to the airport
Kandy to the airport usually takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours. With a flight to catch, we’d leave Kandy six hours before take-off, so a morning flight doesn’t fit this loop. Book an afternoon or evening departure, or take the one-base version.
A night flight leaves room for the white spiral tower at Ambuluwawa, 27 km from Kandy by way of Gampola. Wikipedia gives a typical visit two to three hours and calls the climb physically demanding (Wikipedia). The airport is about 100 km on, usually 2.5 to 3 hours.

Sri Lanka itinerary 5 days by train: what we found in October 2026
We found no through train from Kandy to Ella on 13 October 2026. Cyclone Ditwah damaged 70% of the country’s railways at the end of 2025 (Wikivoyage). On 2 October 2026, Colombo Times reported trains suspended between Peradeniya and Kandy station, with repairs still under way on the Gampola to Nawalapitiya stretch and the Hatton to Nanu Oya stretch (Colombo Times). The top of the line, Nanu Oya to Badulla through Ella, reopened on 20 June 2026 (Ada Derana).
On 13 October 2026 we ran ten searches in each direction on the railway’s seat reservation site, for travel dates every third day from 14 October to 10 November (seat reservations).
| Stretch | Searches with seats | On the train | Reserved seat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ella to Nanu Oya | 10 of 10 | 2 hours 32 minutes | LKR 1,200 to 2,500. |
| Nanu Oya to Ella | 5 of 10 | 2 hours 25 minutes | LKR 1,200 to 2,500. |
| Kandy and Ella, either way | 0 of 10 each way | None listed | None listed. |
| Colombo Fort and Galle, either way | 10 of 10 each way | 2 hours 19 to 25 minutes | LKR 1,100. |
| Colombo Fort to Peradeniya | 4 of 10, none after 23 October | 2 hours 22 to 2 hours 39 minutes | LKR 900 to 2,000. |
That is one day’s listing on a booking site, not a timetable: a blank search means it had no seats to show, not that no train ran. The table shows the regular trains. The two Wednesdays in the sample also had dearer ones: a slower morning train from Ella at LKR 2,500 to 3,500, and an afternoon train from Nanu Oya at LKR 5,000 to 7,000.
So the loop can use up to three trains. The coast line covers day 1 from Colombo Fort, though both expresses the site listed left in the afternoon. For day 5 the site listed trains from Peradeniya to Colombo Fort up to 23 October, the tenth day after our search, and none later. Trains came back to Peradeniya on 2 October 2026 and went no nearer to Kandy (Sunday Times), and a derailment interrupted them on 5 October (Daily Mirror). Galle to Ella and Nanu Oya to Kandy stay on the road.
You can reserve from 30 days before the travel date (reservation FAQ). Read our Kandy to Ella train guide again the week you travel: it follows the line section by section.
What the tickets cost
We read these prices on 13 October 2026 on the pages linked beside them, each for one foreign adult. Rooms and the car vary with your dates and are left out.
| What | Price | Where we read it |
|---|---|---|
| Kandy’s Temple of the Tooth | Most countries: LKR 3,000. SAARC countries, Thailand and Myanmar: LKR 2,500. | Sri Dalada Maligawa |
| Ella to Nanu Oya, reserved seat | Regular trains: LKR 1,200 third class, 1,700 second, 2,500 air-conditioned. Online adds 5%. | Seat reservations, reservation FAQ |
| Colombo Fort to Galle express | LKR 1,100, air-conditioned. | Seat reservations |
| Electronic Travel Authorization | Free for 30 days for nationals of 40 countries since 25 May 2026. Required before you land. | Official ETA site |
| Sigiriya (monsoon route) | USD 35, or LKR 11,725, on the list updated 10 October 2026. | CCF prices |
| Dambulla cave temple (monsoon route) | LKR 3,000 for foreigners, cash only, as of September 2025. | Wikivoyage |
| Udawalawe park fee and jeep | No price on the department’s permit page. | Department of Wildlife Conservation |
On the main loop two tickets have fixed prices: the temple at LKR 3,000 and a regular train seat, LKR 1,200 to 2,500 before the 5% online fee. Together they come to LKR 4,260 to 5,625. That’s about USD 13 to 17 at the Central Cultural Fund’s exchange rate, LKR 335 to the dollar on 10 October 2026 (CCF price list).
For Udawalawe, get the entry fee and the jeep quoted together, in writing.
When the south coast is wet: Sigiriya and Kandy
The south-west monsoon months are May to September in the Department of Meteorology’s climate newsletter (Department of Meteorology). Galle’s station averages 162 to 316 mm in each of them (WMO climate normals). Maha Illuppallama, the station we use for Sigiriya, is 38 km away in a straight line and gets 21 to 40 mm a month from June to August (WMO climate normals). Katugastota, Kandy’s station, sits in between at 95 to 141 mm a month through the monsoon (WMO climate normals).
- Day 1: the airport to Sigiriya for two nights. It’s about 145 km, usually 3.5 to 4 hours.
- Day 2: the Sigiriya rock when the ticket counter opens at 7am (CCF tickets). The Central Cultural Fund puts the ascent at 1.5 to 2 hours and roughly 1,200 steps (Central Cultural Fund). Dambulla’s cave temple is 19 km away for the afternoon.
- Day 3: Sigiriya to Kandy for two nights. It’s about 90 km, usually 2.5 to 3 hours.
- Day 4: a full day in Kandy.
- Day 5: Kandy to the airport, usually 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
That’s three legs and 8.5 to 10.5 hours. From July to October the dry season draws elephants to the reservoir in Minneriya National Park. Love Sri Lanka rates August and September best and advises an afternoon safari between 3pm and 6pm (Love Sri Lanka). Seven more stops near the rock are in our things to do in Sigiriya guide.
October and November are wet on both routes: each of the four stations named in this post averages more than 260 mm in both months (WMO climate normals).
Five days in one place: the south coast
The rule in our itinerary planner is two nights for every stop, plus one, which makes four nights one base, not three. If long drives aren’t your idea of a holiday, pick one south-coast town and stay.
Oura Travel is based in Weligama, so take that as the example. The airport is 171 km away, usually 2.5 to 3 hours each way, which makes 5 to 6 hours of airport driving in all, before any outings. Our day trips from Weligama guide has six outings within an hour each way, Galle Fort and Mirissa’s whale boats among them.
Whale watching off Mirissa has a season, November to April, and even then Love Sri Lanka won’t promise a sighting (Love Sri Lanka). January, February and March suit this version: Galle’s station records 71 to 90 mm in each (WMO climate normals).
What 5 days can’t fit that 7 can
- The Cultural Triangle and the coast in one trip. Our 7-day itinerary opens with two nights at Sigiriya and runs the loop the other way, at a cost of 17 to 20.5 driving hours.
- A second night by the sea, unless you trade one of Ella’s two. The legs and the total don’t change.
- A night in the tea country at Nuwara Eliya.
- Yala. Tours are booked through guest houses and hotels in Tissamaharama (Wikivoyage), which means a night there. Blocks 1 and 2 closed in dry weather on 14 September 2026 (Ada Derana). On 13 October the same outlet reported both due to reopen to tourists on 16 October (Ada Derana). That was an announcement when we read it, so ask which blocks are open.
Questions about a 5 day Sri Lanka itinerary
Is 5 days enough for Sri Lanka?
Enough for one loop of three bases, or one region at a slow pace. A 5 day tour of Sri Lanka can’t cover the whole island. The loop here costs 12.5 to 15.5 hours in the car and leaves out Sigiriya, Nuwara Eliya and Yala.
Can you do a Sri Lanka itinerary of 5 days by train?
Only in part. On 13 October 2026 the railway’s booking site listed Ella to Nanu Oya and Colombo Fort to Galle on every date we searched. It listed no train from Kandy to Ella in either direction (seat reservations).
What is the best month for 5 days in Sri Lanka?
January, February or March for the coast, Ella and Kandy loop: those three are the driest of the year at the Galle weather station (WMO climate normals). In the monsoon months, May to September, take the Sigiriya and Kandy version.
