Cooking Class in Ella, Sri Lanka: Classes, Prices, Tips

Six cooking classes in Ella compared from their own pages on 3 October 2026: where each one is, what it teaches, how long it lasts and what it costs, plus how to fit one around the walks and how to reach Ella this year.

Cooking Class in Ella, Sri Lanka: Classes, Prices, Tips

A cooking class in Ella, Sri Lanka, takes one to three and a half hours, and you finish by eating what you cooked. That’s from six classes whose own pages or booking listings we checked on 3 October 2026; five gave a length. Curries were on five of the six menus. Three pages priced in dollars, from USD 17 a person to USD 40 (GetYourGuide; 98 Acres Resort). Two listings showed euros and one rupees. We don’t run a class in Ella; ours is on the south coast, in Weligama.

Key takeaways

  • The six classes are held in a spice garden near the town centre, a resort café, three open-air kitchens or huts and a home kitchen with hotel pickup.
  • Five of the six menus name curries, two add a coconut sambol and two a roti. Ask the host which hill-country vegetables go in the pot that week.
  • On 3 October 2026 the railway’s booking site had seats between Nanu Oya and Ella and none from Kandy. Plan the Kandy end by road.
  • Oura’s own cooking class is in Weligama on the south coast, 4 to 5 hours’ drive away. We don’t run one in Ella.

Where cooking classes in Ella take place

Ella is a small town in Badulla District, 1,041 metres above sea level and surrounded by tea plantations (Wikipedia). Ella Spice Garden is on Lizzie Villa Road, 200 metres from the town centre (Ella Spice Garden). Two more are out along Passara Road: 98 Acres Resort, and a class that meets at The Spice Lodge by the road’s third mile post (98 Acres Resort; byFood). Wikivoyage names the same road as the way to Little Adam’s Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge. Its editors rate the home cooking in Ella’s guesthouses and hotels as probably the town’s best food (Wikivoyage).

The table shows what each class’s own page or booking listing said when we checked on 3 October 2026. It’s a sample of six in no particular order, not a ranking. Each price is in the currency its page displayed.

Village Food Corner and Bella Ella cookery classes

Two other names come up in searches for Ella cookery classes: Village Food Corner Cookery Class and Restaurant, and Bella Ella. On 3 October 2026 we couldn’t read a page of its own for Village Food Corner’s class, neither a website nor a booking listing. So we haven’t described it.

Bella Ella is on Booking.com as a homestay at Kudugal Pathana, Kithal Ella. On 3 October 2026 the listing named a cooking class among the homestay’s activities and said charges may apply. It gave no menu, length or price (Booking.com). With either one, ask the hosts what they teach, how long it takes and what it costs.

What you cook in an Ella cooking class

Curry is on five of the six menus, and two of the listings say rice and curry in so many words. That’s rice, boiled or steamed, served with one fish or meat curry and several others of vegetables, lentils or fruit (Wikipedia).

Ella Spice Garden’s site names all eight of its dishes, among them coconut roti, dhal and an okra stir-fry (Ella Spice Garden). The GetYourGuide listing adds hoppers, which are bowl-shaped pancakes, along with string hoppers and honey roti (GetYourGuide). If the names are new to you, our Sri Lanka food guide explains eleven dishes in one table.

According to Love Sri Lanka, the most faithful version of a curry comes out of a clay vessel, and an open wood fire gives food a smoky taste (Love Sri Lanka). Only the Tea Pick View listing states clay pots on its page (byFood). With the others, ask whether you’ll cook on wood or gas.

Ask how much of the cooking you’ll do yourself, too. The GetYourGuide listing carries an automated summary of 220 reviews. It says some travellers felt the class was like a demonstration and wanted more hands-on time (GetYourGuide).

What hill-country cooking adds

Love Sri Lanka says inland farming regions have plenty of fruit and vegetable dishes, while the coast does better seafood. It names four specialities for Ella: dhal curry, pol sambol, kiribath (rice cooked in coconut milk) and gotu kola mallum. The last is a salad of finely chopped leaves with coconut, onion and lime (Love Sri Lanka).

Sri Lanka’s hill country has a cool climate that suits temperate crops such as leek, carrot, cabbage, cauliflower, beet and beans (Wikipedia). Bandarawela is about 12 km from Ella by road (OpenStreetMap). Farmers around it grow leek, carrot, beetroot, cauliflower and cabbage all year, and its wholesale vegetable market is among the largest in the country (Wikipedia).

None of the six pages promises a hill-country menu by name, though. If highland vegetables are what you came for, ask the host which curries are planned and whether the produce is local.

How much a cooking class in Ella costs

Three of the six pages in the table priced in dollars: from USD 17 a person on GetYourGuide, $30 at Ella Spice Garden and USD 40 at 98 Acres Resort (GetYourGuide; Ella Spice Garden; 98 Acres Resort). The two byFood listings showed EUR 18.87 and EUR 23.58 (Tea Pick View; the class meeting at The Spice Lodge), and the Airbnb class Rs 13,230 (Airbnb). We haven’t converted them.

GetYourGuide’s page of Ella cooking classes showed us 24 of its 26 results on 3 October 2026. Fifteen were stand-alone classes of four hours or less, with prices starting from USD 9 to USD 39 a person. Three of those were marked down from a higher price. The other nine ran for five hours or more: day tours, a transfer and longer cooking outings (GetYourGuide). That’s one platform on one day, so don’t read it as the going rate.

What the money covers varies as well, and our cooking class cost guide lists the charges that can sit on top of a listed price. Ella Spice Garden’s $30 includes the garden tour, a spice tea and an e-cookbook (Ella Spice Garden). The Tea Pick View listing includes the meal and the loan of a sarong, but not transport (byFood).

Fitting a class around Ella’s walks

Ella Spice Garden runs a lunch session from 10am and a dinner session from 4.30pm (Ella Spice Garden). The GetYourGuide listing gives 11am and 5pm as its normal starts (GetYourGuide).

Wikivoyage calls Little Adam’s Peak a relatively easy hike and puts the Nine Arch Bridge 45 minutes on foot from the town centre. Ella Rock is harder, at about two hours each way (Wikivoyage). We’d take the bridge or Little Adam’s Peak before a late-morning class, and save a 5pm class for an Ella Rock day. Our Ella travel guide compares the two climbs, and Ella Rock is on our list of hiking trails in Sri Lanka.

A class also fills a wet day. In the WMO’s 1991 to 2020 averages, the station in Bandarawela has its two wettest months in October and November, with 347 and 338 mm and rain on 22 to 24 days of each (WMO normals for Bandarawela). Our Sri Lanka in October guide sets that station’s figures beside the rest of the island’s. Take a layer to an evening class in an open kitchen: the same station’s average daily low stays between 15 and 18°C all year. It stands higher than Ella, at 1,226 metres, so treat its figures as a guide.

Getting to Ella: rail and road in early October 2026

Passenger services between Nanu Oya and Badulla, which pass through Ella, restarted on 20 June 2026 (Ada Derana). We searched the railway’s booking site on 3 October 2026 for 8 and 13 October. From Ella to Nanu Oya it offered seats on two trains on both dates. Towards Ella it offered a single seat on one train on 8 October and no seats on 13 October. Searches from Kandy returned no seats on either date (Sri Lanka Railways seat reservations).

An empty search doesn’t prove that no train runs. Our Kandy to Ella train guide searched 30 days ahead on 2 October. On 15 of those days the site had nothing to sell online from Nanu Oya. The guide also has the timetable, fares and booking rules for that section.

The Kandy end is still closed. Ada Derana reported on 2 October 2026 that the Colombo Fort trains were running again, to Peradeniya and on to Gampola. Its report described a trial run with no passengers aboard (Ada Derana). Peradeniya to Kandy stays suspended until a bridge is repaired, according to Colombo Times. It also reported repairs continuing on two sections further up, one between Gampola and Nawalapitiya and one between Hatton and Nanu Oya (Colombo Times).

On 1 October, News 1st reported Sri Lanka Railways as saying that plans were under way to resume trains from Colombo to Kandy in January (News 1st). That’s a plan, not a timetable, and we found no date in these reports for the two sections above Gampola.

So from Kandy or Colombo in early October 2026, you reach Ella by road, or by road to Nanu Oya and then train. The road times below are rounded up, because OpenStreetMap’s router assumes empty roads.

Diets, children and safety: what to ask

Ella Spice Garden says it plans its cookery demonstrations around a vegan theme (Ella Spice Garden). At other classes, don’t assume a vegetable curry is vegetarian. Sri Lankan cooks use Maldive fish heavily to season vegetable dishes (Wikipedia), and it’s a cured tuna (Wikipedia). Tell the host what you don’t eat when you book, allergies included. The byFood listing for the class that meets at The Spice Lodge says it isn’t recommended for travellers with food allergies (byFood).

The Airbnb class takes guests aged 18 and over only (Airbnb). The Tea Pick View listing says infants must sit on an adult’s lap (byFood). Any class puts knives, hot oil and a stove or fire within reach, so ask what jobs the host gives children.

Our main guide to a cooking class in Sri Lanka explains how to tell a hands-on home kitchen from a hotel demonstration. Questions worth sending before you pay:

  • Is it hands-on, or do we mostly watch?
  • Which dishes are planned, and can you cook without fish, meat or dairy?
  • Is transport included, and how do we get back after dark?

Oura’s own cooking class is in Weligama

We don’t run a class in Ella. Ours is in Weligama, on the south coast. When we read it on 3 October 2026, our listing on GetYourGuide gave the class 4 hours and a price from USD 14 a person. Lunch was included, and transport to the class wasn’t. Reviewers there say it takes place in a family’s home. One wrote that a group of 10 that day meant it wasn’t always possible to join in.

It’s a different part of the trip. From Ella down to Weligama is 176 km, usually 4 to 5 hours by road (OpenStreetMap). So our class belongs to the beach days, and a class in Ella means booking with a host there. If your route ends on the south coast, the Weligama cooking class page has the details and how to book.

Questions about cooking classes in Ella

Is there a Sri Lanka cooking class in Ella?

Yes, several. GetYourGuide’s Ella page alone showed 15 stand-alone cooking classes of four hours or less when we checked on 3 October 2026 (GetYourGuide). Ella Spice Garden and 98 Acres Resort also publish classes on their own websites (Ella Spice Garden; 98 Acres Resort).

How much is a cooking class in Ella?

On 3 October 2026 the three pages that priced in dollars showed from USD 17, $30 and USD 40 a person (GetYourGuide; Ella Spice Garden; 98 Acres Resort). The other three showed EUR 18.87, EUR 23.58 and Rs 13,230. Check what each price includes, because transport and group size differ.

Can I take a class on the day I arrive in Ella?

You can, but we wouldn’t plan on it. On 3 October 2026 the railway’s booking site offered no seats from Kandy for either date we searched (Sri Lanka Railways seat reservations). The drive usually takes 4 to 5 hours (OpenStreetMap). A class the next morning or evening is safer.

Are there vegan cooking classes in Ella?

Ella Spice Garden’s website says its cookery demonstrations have a vegan theme (Ella Spice Garden). GetYourGuide’s Ella page also listed one class with vegan and vegetarian in its title on 3 October 2026 (GetYourGuide). At any other class, say what you don’t eat when you book.

Plan Ella into a private route

From our office in Weligama we put together private trips, each with its own driver-guide. If Ella is one stop on a longer route, a private car with driver covers the road legs while the Kandy trains are out. Tell us your dates and which evening you’d like kept free for a cooking class in Ella. Send us your dates.

We read every class page, listing, rail report and road time above on 3 October 2026. Prices, class times and train services change without notice, so confirm with the host and the railway before you fix a day.
