Things to Do in Bentota: Beach, River and Turtles Guide

Bentota in Sri Lanka for a beach stay: the sea by month, the river trip, what research says about turtle hatcheries, Lunuganga and Brief Garden hours and fees, where to stay by area, and the train and road from Colombo, checked on 31 October 2026.

Things to Do in Bentota: Beach, River and Turtles Guide

Bentota is for a beach stay with a river behind it, and the main things to do are the sand, a boat trip and two Bawa family gardens. The two nearest long-record weather stations make January to March the driest months, and we suggest two or three nights.

The town sits on the south bank of the Bentota River mouth, on Sri Lanka’s south-west coast, about 65 km south of Colombo (Wikipedia). We did not visit for this guide. Hours and fees come from each place’s own page where one exists, as read on 31 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Rain is lowest from January to March at both nearest long-record stations, Galle and Ratmalana: 70 to 101 mm a month.
  • Lunuganga opens by guided tour only, at 11am, 2pm and 3pm, for USD 20 on its own page. Brief Garden’s site gave US$15 per person on 31 October 2026.
  • A 2015 to 2016 survey found tourism was the main reason most of 11 hatcheries operated. Its authors say hatchlings should not be held for days.
  • GOV.UK’s full swimming advice is quoted below. Drownings have been reported at Bentota in January and February, so a dry month is not a safe sea.

Best time to visit Bentota, month by month

Bentota has no weather station in the WMO’s 1991 to 2020 normals, and rain here may differ from both stations we use. Galle, about 48 km down the coast, is in the table, and Ratmalana, about 47 km up it, is in the note below. Seasons follow the Department of Meteorology, and the last column is Sri Lanka Tourism’s summary for each (Sri Lanka Tourism).

MonthsRain at Galle, mm a monthRain days a monthSri Lanka Tourism says
Dec to Feb71 to 1766 to 11Peak season on this coast, calm seas
Mar, Apr90 to 2027 to 12Afternoon thunderstorms, warm, humid
May to Sep162 to 31614 to 17Heavy rain on the south-west coast
Oct, Nov283 to 34515 to 18Heavy showers, seas can be rough

Rain: WMO normals for Galle. February is the driest month at 71 mm and October the wettest at 345 mm. Ratmalana’s normals agree: 85, 70 and 101 mm from January to March, the three lowest months there too, and 395 mm in October.

Love Sri Lanka gives December to March for south coast beaches (Love Sri Lanka). November and April are far wetter at Galle.

Bentota in January

January averages 87 mm over about 7 rain days at Galle, with days near 30°C and nights near 23°C (WMO normals). Our Sri Lanka in January guide covers the rest of the island that month.

Bentota beach and the sea

OpenStreetMap draws two adjoining stretches of sand named Bentota, about 5 km in all by our measure (north stretch; south stretch).

GOV.UK’s Sri Lanka page was still current on 31 October 2026 and last updated on 21 September 2026 (GOV.UK). Its “Swimming safety” advice, in full: “Many beaches in Sri Lanka have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of the year. Get advice from your hotel or tour operator before going in the sea.” A link goes to the Royal Life Saving Society (UK Foreign Office).

Sri Lanka Tourism’s summary above is the nearest official month guide we found: calm seas from December to February, rough at times in October and November. That describes a season, not a clearance to swim. Dated reports show trouble here in the dry months too.

The Coast Guard reported six rescues by its Bentota life savers on 28 February and 1 March 2021, four of them from currents (Sri Lanka Coast Guard). The Sunday Times reported a drowning near a Bentota breakwater on 11 February 2025 (Sunday Times). Ada Derana reported another at Bentota Beach on 25 January 2026 (Ada Derana). On 11 August 2025 it reported that a swimmer caught in a current had drowned off Moragalla, north of the river (Ada Derana).

Some of those reports mention lifeguards, but we found no current official source for their hours or for warning flags, so do not count on either.

The Bentota river trip

Love Sri Lanka suggests asking your hotel to arrange river trips (Love Sri Lanka; Love Sri Lanka). Atlas and Boots, a travel blog, described one trip in May 2017, updated in June 2020. It saw mangroves, snakes and bats, then stopped at a coconut works and for a photo with a baby crocodile, which the writers oppose (Atlas and Boots). Ask before you board whether your boat does this.

Wildlife sightings are chance. Jetwing, a hotel group, says trips last one to two hours, and put a river safari at $30 to $65 per person when we checked on 31 October 2026 (Jetwing). Anantara Kalutara’s 2026 list prices a one-hour Bentota river cruise at LKR 25,500 for up to four people, with transport from that resort (Anantara price list). These are two sellers’ figures, not a local rate.

Do not confuse this with the Madu Ganga, a separate river at Balapitiya and a Ramsar wetland since 2003 (Wikipedia). Balapitiya station is 17 km down the line from Bentota’s (Sri Lanka Railways). Jetwing’s page itself says “Madu river in Bentota”, so ask where your boat starts.

Kosgoda turtle hatchery: the visit and the concerns

The stretch south of Bentota has several turtle hatcheries, and Kosgoda village is about 9 km from Bentota beach by road (route). Seven of the 11 hatcheries in a 2015 to 2016 survey were in Kosgoda, Bentota or Induruwa (Indian Ocean Turtle Newsletter).

Love Sri Lanka says hatcheries buy eggs from fishermen so they are not sold to poachers, bury them in sand, then keep hatchlings in tanks for a few days to grow stronger. Releases happen at sunset, without loud noise or flash, and visitors should not touch the babies (Love Sri Lanka).

Researchers are less kind. The 2015 to 2016 survey reports:

  • 73% of the 11 hatcheries gave tourism as their main reason for operating, and the rest gave tourism and conservation together.
  • Eggs took more than two hours to reach reburial at 73% of hatcheries.
  • Reported holding ranged from release on the day of emergence to two weeks for every hatchling. One hatchery reported keeping two or three for years.
  • Earlier studies found that holding hatchlings for days cuts crawl speed and swimming stroke rate, so the authors say it should stop.
  • The usual reason given, protection from leeches or fish, has no documented support.
  • Hatcheries reported 82% average hatching success, but the authors call those figures uncertain.
  • They accept that hatcheries may teach visitors about threats to turtles, and want licensing and more protection of nests on the beach.

An earlier survey, from 2010 and 2011, found private ownership and profit from tourism as the main motive at all seven hatcheries then working in Galle district. All seven bought their eggs, although collecting eggs from the wild is illegal (Indian Ocean Turtle Newsletter). In July 2026 The Pearl Protectors, a volunteer marine group, wrote that keeping hatchlings in tanks has no shown conservation benefit. It accepts that a few hatcheries do genuine work (The Pearl Protectors). Both surveys are ten or more years old and largely self-reported, so a given hatchery may differ today. We found no newer survey.

If you go, ask how long hatchlings are held and whether adults are kept in tanks, and do not pay to handle anything. We found no official hours or fees, so we give none. We have a stake here: one of Oura Travel’s day tours includes a hatchery stop, so read this section knowing that.

Lunuganga, Brief Garden and the temples

Geoffrey Bawa, the architect, bought Lunuganga in 1949 and worked on it for about forty years (Wikipedia). His elder brother Bevis made Brief, 8 km inland by its own account (Brief Garden). The figures below are from their own pages on 31 October 2026.

At Lunuganga you can only enter on a tour, you need no reservation, and children under 7 go free. The Trust warns of steps, steep inclines and uneven ground (Geoffrey Bawa Trust). Teardrop, which runs the hotel there, adds that tours start promptly, late arrivals cannot join, outside guides are not allowed and the main house is not included (Teardrop).

Brief’s site gives two closing times: 4.30pm in its header, and 4pm with last entry at 4pm in its package text, so arrive well before 4pm. The fee covers the garden and the bungalow tour, and children under 5 go free (Brief Garden).

Kande Viharaya

Kande Viharaya, near Aluthgama, was founded in the early 18th century, and its seated Buddha of 160 ft was unveiled in 2007. Its page says knees covered in one line and ankles in another, so go with ankles. Cover your shoulders and take your shoes off (Love Sri Lanka).

Water sports in Bentota

Love Sri Lanka calls Bentota a hub for water activities, from jet skis to stand-up paddleboarding (Love Sri Lanka).

We found no dated price list from an operator on Bentota beach. As a rough guide only, Anantara Kalutara, a resort up the coast, lists 2026 prices for sports at the resort itself, not at Bentota. Per person, a jet ski is LKR 16,500 for 15 minutes, a banana boat LKR 4,500 a round and an hour’s canoeing LKR 3,000 (Anantara price list). That is one resort’s list, read on 31 October 2026.

Bentota, Hikkaduwa or Mirissa?

Bentota is the closest of the three to Colombo airport and has the river and the gardens.

TownRoad from airportLove Sri Lanka listsBetter for
Bentota109 kmJet skiing, river boat ridesRiver, gardens, shorter transfer
Hikkaduwa141 kmSurf breaks, snorkelling, divingSurf and a marine park
Mirissa176 kmWhale and dolphin watching, surfingWhale boats, November to April

Airport distances are the routed figures in our best beaches guide. Unawatuna, further along, has its own guide.

Which area to stay in: Bentota, Induruwa, Aluthgama or Beruwala

These four sit along about 11 km of road. Rail distances are from Colombo Fort (Sri Lanka Railways). The last column mixes Wikipedia and one dated report, Nasha Planeta’s of 22 September 2024.

AreaPositionStationCharacter, as reported
AluthgamaNorth bank of the river59.7 kmTown services, bus and main rail stop
BentotaSouth bank, beach strip61 kmHotels by the sand, small railway halt
InduruwaSouth of Bentota64.9 kmQuiet, 2.1 km mapped beach, few places to eat outside hotels
BeruwalaAbout 8 km north54.3 kmFishery harbour, old mosques, few beaches by that report

Bentota puts you on the sand. Induruwa suits a quieter stay if you plan to eat at your hotel. Aluthgama has the shops and trains, but no beach of its own, Nasha Planeta says. Moragalla, beyond Aluthgama, has cafes and loungers by the same report, but often river debris on the sand (Nasha Planeta). Town notes: Wikipedia on Aluthgama and Beruwala; Induruwa’s beach on OpenStreetMap.

Getting to Bentota by train and road

**Road.** From Colombo airport our routing gives 109 km, 92 minutes on empty roads, so allow 1 hour 45 to 2 hours 15 (route). Our airport taxi guide covers fares.

**Train.** Bentota is on the Coastal Line, but its station is a small halt and most trains stop at Aluthgama (Wikipedia), 1.3 km up the line by the railway’s figures. BYC.lk, an unofficial site, listed the line as running normally in a notice checked on 28 October 2026 (BYC.lk). We found no official status notice, and no report of a closure since a derailment at Wadduwa in April 2026 (News 1st).

On 31 October 2026 trainschedule.lk, another unofficial site, listed six departures that Saturday from Colombo Fort to Bentota, between 6.50am and 7.30pm. Journeys took 1 hour 18 to 2 hours 4, at Rs 300 second class and Rs 160 third (trainschedule.lk). The railway’s own timetable site failed to load, with an expired security certificate, so confirm times and fares at the station.

**Rain.** In its update of 21 September 2026, GOV.UK warned of more flooding and landslides during inter-monsoon rain, with possible transport disruption (GOV.UK). Check your route first.

Questions about Bentota

How many days do you need in Bentota?

We suggest two nights: the river one morning and a Lunuganga tour after lunch, then Brief and a beach afternoon the next day. That is our own sum from the visit lengths above. Add a third for slow beach time. One blogger suggests at least three nights (My Adventures Across the World). See also how many days in Sri Lanka.

Is Bentota worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a first or last beach stop nearer the airport than the south coast towns, with a river and gardens. For surf or whales, look at Hikkaduwa or Mirissa.

Is it safe to swim at Bentota beach?

We cannot call any beach safe. GOV.UK’s advice, quoted in full above, is to take advice locally first, and the reports above show drownings at Bentota in the dry months as well as the wet ones.

How far is Bentota from Colombo?

About 65 km south on Wikipedia’s figure and 61 km by rail. Our road routing from Fort station gives 82 km (route).

Plan Bentota as part of your trip

Oura Travel plans private road journeys from Weligama, further down this coast. If Bentota is your first or last stop, tell us your dates and we will suggest how to fit it in.

Hours, fees and prices change, so confirm with each place before you go.
