Most Weligama restaurants are in the town, around the railway station and the fish market, or along the road behind the surf-school beach. Of the 21 places we list, 19 are there, between 250 m and 1.4 km from the station. The other two are at Kapparatota, on the western shore, about 2.5 km south-west. We measured each one on OpenStreetMap. The listings take in seafood restaurants, roti shops, cafes, and Thai, Italian and Asian kitchens. To choose, compare the ratings and review counts below, then read each place’s own page.
Key takeaways
- The tables list 21 places with the Google Maps rating and number of reviews we read on 16 October 2026. They’re grouped by position on the bay, not ranked.
- Three seafood restaurants stand within about 130 m of a Google-listed fish market, roughly 450 m south of the station.
- Four of the five cafes and coffee shops in the tables are on the road behind the surf-school beach, 460 m to 1.3 km east of the station.
- One cliff-top kitchen’s menu, read on 16 October 2026, priced vegetable rice and curry at Rs 1,500 and a 500 g grilled fish at Rs 2,500.
- Sri Lanka Tourism says the tap water isn’t safe to drink. The CDC’s food and drink advice is below.
Where to eat in Weligama: the bay at a glance
Weligama is a town in Matara District whose two main industries are tourism and fishing (Wikipedia). The town and the station are at the western end of the beach. OpenStreetMap shows 70 restaurants, cafes, fast-food and ice-cream places around the bay, and 64 of them are within 1.5 km of the station. It still shows some places that Google Maps lists as permanently closed (OpenStreetMap). The mapped surf schools sit about 560 m to 1.2 km east of the station (OpenStreetMap).
We measured every place in our tables in a straight line from the centre of Weligama railway station, using the OpenStreetMap point for each one. Every point was within 25 m of the place’s own pin on Google Maps.
| Area | From the station | Places listed |
|---|---|---|
| Town centre | 250 to 460 m south and south-east | 5 |
| By the fish market | 470 to 535 m south and south-west | 4 |
| Surf-school beach and east | 460 m to 1.4 km east and south-east | 10 |
| Kapparatota, western shore | 2.4 to 2.6 km south-west | 2 |
Weligama restaurants: the listings on 16 October 2026
The tables report what Google Maps showed for each place on the morning of 16 October 2026, Sri Lanka time. Names are as listed, minus taglines, with Google’s category, rating and review count. They are listings, not our judgement and not a ranking. Within each area, places run in order of distance from the station.
The tables don’t cover every place in town. We left out places we couldn’t match on both maps, places that are mainly bars, and hotel restaurants. On the day we read them, three listings carried a “Temporarily closed” notice: KAIYŌ, Le’ Fish and Sea Salt Society. Ratings, counts and notices change daily, so open the listing before you go.

Weligama cafes: brunch, coffee and rooftops
Five places in the tables call themselves cafes or coffee shops in a name, a Google category or a website. On 16 October 2026 they said this:
- Nomad sums itself up as coffee, brunch and a bakery, open daily from 8am to 6pm. Brunch runs all day, lunch starts at noon and the last orders go in at 5.30pm (Nomad menu page).
- Hangtime Hostel’s rooftop cafe, listed on Google Maps as Hangten Rooftop Restaurant, takes non-guests from 7.30am to 9.30pm. By its own account it’s across from the surf schools and serves Sri Lankan and international dishes.
- Google Maps files Moochies under cafe and KOPI under coffee shop, and After surf has “cafe” in its name (Moochies; KOPI; After surf).
For bars, sunset drinks and party nights, go to our Weligama nightlife guide, which also covers the Hangtime rooftop’s evening events. Sri Lanka Tourism notes that alcohol isn’t sold on Poya (full moon) days (Sri Lanka Tourism), and the nightlife guide lists the dates.
Lunch and dinner: hours and menus from their own pages
Chef Akila Kitchen, a cliff-top place at Kapparathota that isn’t in our tables, says it opens daily for lunch and dinner (Chef Akila Kitchen). Bangkok Kitchen bills itself as Thai street food with a rooftop bar, open for dinner from 5.30pm to 9.30pm (Bangkok Kitchen). Rise’s page gives Italian food for dinner only, Tuesday to Sunday, 5pm to 10pm (Rise).
MARU’s site builds its menu around poké bowls (MARU). The Cliff’s menu page speaks of local ingredients with global influences, and labels its vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes (The Cliff).
Seafood and the Weligama fish market
Google Maps lists a fish market 446 m south of the station by our measurement (Google Maps). OpenStreetMap marks seafood stalls on the same stretch, 450 to 510 m from the station (OpenStreetMap). The three seafood restaurants in our fish market table are between about 30 m and 130 m from that listing. Kuma Seafood Restaurant’s listing gives “Fish Market” as its address (Kuma).
On the western shore, OpenStreetMap marks two harbours, tagged as marinas, 1.5 and 2.1 km south-west of the station (OpenStreetMap). A Daily FT report of 30 January 2017 said a 128 m jetty had opened at Kapparatota on 20 January. That let local fishermen anchor at sea rather than bring their boats ashore. The report expected a new market place for their catch, and said the fish market then stretched along the Colombo to Matara road (Daily FT). We found no later source on where the market stands now.
Love Sri Lanka says the coastal regions offer superior seafood dishes (Love Sri Lanka). For raw fish, read the CDC’s advice in the food safety section first.
What to eat: rice and curry, kottu and hoppers
Rice and curry is the core of Sri Lankan cooking. Alongside the rice comes a fish or meat curry, plus other curries of vegetables, pulses or fruit (Wikipedia). Kottu is shredded roti stir-fried with vegetables, with egg, meat or cheese as options. Hoppers are made from a fermented batter, usually rice flour and coconut milk, and come spicy or sweet (Wikipedia).
Our Sri Lanka food guide explains these dishes and how to order them. An older post on Sri Lanka’s most famous dish looks at rice and curry alone.

Small local eateries are often called “hotels”, which Wikivoyage warns can confuse visitors. Many of them sell rice and curry in packets, along with “short eats”, which are spicy rolls and samosas (Wikivoyage).
To learn the dishes yourself, try our Weligama cooking class. It’s a hands-on class held in a family home in Weligama and booked through GetYourGuide, where you cook traditional dishes and then eat them for lunch. For the current price and how to book, see the class page.

What a meal costs: prices from a menu
Of the restaurant websites we read, two printed prices. Chef Akila Kitchen’s menu carries no date. These are the prices it showed in rupees when we read it on 16 October 2026 (Chef Akila Kitchen).
| Dish | Price listed |
|---|---|
| Roti with curry | Rs 1,250 |
| Vegetable rice and curry | Rs 1,500 |
| Chicken massaman | Rs 2,500 |
| Grilled fish, 500 g | Rs 2,500 |
| Prawns, grilled or curry | Rs 3,000 |
The Hangten rooftop’s menu is a PDF on Hangtime’s website, and its file name dates it to 2026 and 2027. Prices carry no currency sign: rye bread with two toppings is 1500 and with four is 2200. The menu says its prices include taxes and service charges (Hangtime menu).
Wikivoyage’s Sri Lanka guide, a wiki page that gives no date for its figures, puts rice and curry at Rs 300 to 500. It adds that the most expensive tourist places seldom charge more than US$10 (Wikivoyage). Chef Akila’s vegetable rice and curry is three to five times that figure. One menu is one restaurant, though, so ask to see a menu before you sit down.
Vegetarian, vegan and halal food
These statements come from the places’ own pages, read on 16 October 2026:
- Nomad: gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options (Nomad).
- Hangtime’s rooftop: plant-based options, and every smoothie on the menu is vegan (Hangtime; menu).
- Rise: vegan and vegetarian food, and gluten-free pizza and bread when not sold out (Rise).
- MARU: its eggplant and tofu bowls can be made vegan (MARU menu).
- The Cliff: vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes are marked on the menu (The Cliff).
In local cooking, however, a vegetable curry isn’t always vegetarian. Many Sri Lankan dishes, vegetable curries above all, contain Maldives fish, a cured tuna. It’s also an essential part of coconut sambol (Wikipedia). Ask before you order.
None of the restaurants’ own pages that we read describes its food as halal. If you need it, ask the restaurant directly.
Food safety and drinking water
Sri Lanka Tourism’s travel tips page carries no date, and we read it on 16 October 2026. It says tap water is not safe to drink, and that some hotels and restaurants boil and filter it too hastily, so bottled water is the best solution. The bottle should carry SLS certification, with the seal broken in front of you. Beware of ice unless you’re sure it wasn’t made from tap water, and keep bottled water for rinsing after brushing your teeth (Sri Lanka Tourism).
On food, the same page blames most upset stomachs on unsanitary preparation. It warns about undercooked fish (shellfish above all) and meat (pork and mince above all), salads not washed in purified water, and fruit that’s already peeled. Take care with ice cream too, in particular from street vendors and cheap restaurants. After a recent power cut, be wary of anything kept in a fridge.
The US CDC’s Sri Lanka page, last reviewed on 25 August 2026, recommends a hepatitis A vaccine for unvaccinated travellers aged one or over, and a typhoid vaccine for most travellers. It has extra advice for infants and for some older travellers, and asks you to see a doctor at least a month before the trip. The typhoid vaccine isn’t 100% effective, it says, so safe food and water habits also matter (CDC). Its food and drink page, last reviewed on 6 January 2026, sets out those habits (CDC):
- Wash your hands with soap and water before eating, or use a sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol.
- Eat hot food hot and cold food cold. At a buffet, hot dishes should be steaming and cold ones chilled.
- Dry food and food in factory-sealed packs are usually safe, if nobody else has opened or handled them.
- Avoid raw food: salads, cut fruit and vegetables, fresh salsas and sauces, and raw meat or seafood, including ceviche. Fruit you peel yourself, or wash in bottled or disinfected water, may be safer.
- Avoid street food, or follow the same rules if you eat it.
- Don’t drink tap water or swallow it in the shower, and brush your teeth with bottled or disinfected water. Don’t use ice where the water may be contaminated.
- Sealed bottles and cans are safer than tap water, but some vendors refill bottles with untreated water and fake the seal. Fizzy drinks in bottles or cans are typically safe.
- Hot coffee and tea should be safe if served steaming hot, not warm. Take care with added cream or lemon.
- Pasteurised milk from a sealed bottle is usually safe. Don’t drink milk or cream kept in open jugs at room temperature.
- Avoid fountain drinks and juice squeezed by someone else.
The CDC page also covers baby formula, alcohol and mixers, and bushmeat.
Questions about Weligama restaurants
What is the best restaurant in Weligama?
We don’t rank restaurants. On 16 October 2026 the highest rating in our tables was After surf rooftop cafe’s, 4.9 from 2,376 reviews (After surf). MARU had the most reviews, 3,117, at 4.8 (MARU). A rating can’t tell you what suits your group, so read the recent reviews.
Is there a fish market in Weligama?
Yes. On 16 October 2026 Google Maps listed a fish market 446 m south of the railway station by our measurement, with seafood restaurants beside it (Google Maps). On the western shore at Kapparatota, a 128 m fishing jetty opened in January 2017, a Daily FT report said at the time (Daily FT).
Are there restaurants with a view in Weligama?
We can’t judge a view from a listing, so here are the places’ own words. Bangkok Kitchen says its rooftop bar overlooks Weligama bay, and Hangtime’s rooftop cafe promises ocean views. Chef Akila Kitchen calls itself a family kitchen on the cliff (Bangkok Kitchen; Hangtime; Chef Akila Kitchen).
Are there vegan restaurants in Weligama?
Several places state vegan options on their own pages, including Nomad, Rise and Hangtime’s rooftop cafe (Nomad; Rise; Hangtime). In local curries, check for Maldives fish, which often goes into vegetable dishes (Wikipedia).
Can you drink the tap water in Weligama?
Sri Lanka Tourism’s undated travel tips, read on 16 October 2026, say tap water isn’t safe to drink and that some hotels and restaurants boil and filter it too hastily. It advises bottled water with SLS certification, the seal broken in front of you, and care with ice (Sri Lanka Tourism).
