Sri Lanka in January is dry in the places most visitors want to be. The north-east monsoon runs from December to February and mainly affects the north-eastern parts of the island (Department of Meteorology). That leaves the south and west coasts and the Cultural Triangle with settled weather, and the hill country at its sunniest (Wikivoyage). Leave the east coast for later in the year. We plan trips from Weligama on the south coast.

Sri Lanka weather in January, region by region
The island’s other monsoon, the south-west monsoon, brings wetter weather to the south-western regions from May to September (Department of Meteorology); our Sri Lanka weather by month guide follows both monsoons through the year. The table shows January averages at weather stations around the island, from the World Meteorological Organization’s 1991 to 2020 normals (WMO normals, NOAA archive).

South and west coasts: go
Colombo and Galle each get under 90 mm of rain in an average January, spread over five to seven wet days (WMO normals). From November to April the sea off the south coast is at its calmest (Love Sri Lanka). Calm is relative, though: at Weligama the current can be strong and unpredictable (Wikivoyage), so swim with care.
Hill country: go, and pack a fleece
Nuwara Eliya averages 19.9°C by day and 10.4°C at night in January (WMO normals), and the Department of Meteorology’s outlook for January 2024 warned of possible ground frost in the district (Department of Meteorology). The Ella side of the hills is wetter, and January isn’t its driest time of year. Bandarawela, the closest of these stations to Ella, averages 153 mm over 14 or 15 wet days, about as much rain as Trincomalee and more than in any month from June to August (WMO normals). In Ella the rain often comes in the afternoon and lasts about an hour (Wikivoyage), so walk in the morning.
Cultural Triangle: go early in the day
Anuradhapura averages 86 mm of rain on about six days in January, with highs near 30°C, and February is drier still, at 60 mm (WMO normals). Heat, more than rain, is the reason to start at dawn.
East coast: skip it this month
Here the monsoon is still going. Trincomalee averages 152 mm in January and Pottuvil 263 mm (WMO normals). Pottuvil is about 4 km from most of Arugam Bay’s guesthouses, and Arugam Bay’s surf season doesn’t start until April (Wikivoyage). The north: better than you’d think
Jaffna’s rains are mostly over by January. Its average falls from 274 mm in December to 44 mm in January, on about four wet days (WMO normals). It’s a predominantly Tamil city (Love Sri Lanka), so a natural place to be for Thai Pongal.
Weather in Sri Lanka in January and February
On the west coast there’s little in it: Colombo averages 80 mm in January and 77 mm in February. Nearly everywhere else February is drier, as our Sri Lanka in February guide shows station by station. Nuwara Eliya drops from 116 mm to 73 mm, Trincomalee from 152 mm to 96 mm and Pottuvil from 263 mm to 137 mm (WMO normals).
What to do in Sri Lanka in January
Whale watching off Mirissa
The season for whale watching off Mirissa is November to April, and Love Sri Lanka rates December to April as the best months. Boats leave by 6am because whales are more likely to be seen early, but even in season nobody can promise one, and seasickness tablets are worth packing (Love Sri Lanka).
Surfing at Weligama
For January surf, stay on the south coast and base yourself at Weligama beach. According to Love Sri Lanka, nowhere on the south coast beats Weligama for surfing, whatever your level (Love Sri Lanka). Its season runs from September to the end of May, and its small, predictable breaks suit first-timers. Surfers with more experience head for the reef breaks at Midigama, in season from October to April, or Mirissa, from November to March (Love Sri Lanka). Lessons are easy to find, with plenty of surf schools on the beach (Love Sri Lanka).
Sigiriya and the ancient cities
Sigiriya is open from 7am to 5pm, and tickets can be booked online (Central Cultural Fund). A full foreign ticket was USD 35 on its price list updated on 24 September 2026 (Central Cultural Fund). Horton Plains, Ella and the hill-country train
Horton Plains is open daily from 6am to 6pm, and plastic isn’t allowed in (Love Sri Lanka). Its dry season is January to March, and nights on the plains can drop to 5°C (Wikipedia). Around Ella, climb Little Adam’s Peak or walk down to the Nine Arches Bridge before the afternoon rain, or pick a longer route from our Sri Lanka hiking trails guide.
About 70% of the rail network was damaged by Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025 (Wikivoyage). Services between Nanu Oya and Badulla, a stretch that passes through Ella, restarted on 20 June 2026 (Onlanka), but when we checked in late September 2026 there were still no trains between Kandy and the hill country. Sri Lanka Railways said on 28 September that trains from Colombo Fort to Peradeniya, near Kandy, were due to restart on 2 October 2026 (Newswire), but that doesn’t cover the line into the hills. Drive to Nanu Oya and board there, after checking with Sri Lanka Railways. Wikivoyage says reserved seats go on sale 32 days ahead and sell out almost at once, and that in the December and January high season even resellers may have none left in the final week or two (Wikivoyage).
Adam’s Peak
Pilgrimage season runs from the Unduvap full moon in December to Vesak in May. About 20,000 people climb on weekends during the season, and January and February are the busiest months. From Dalhousie it’s around 5,200 steps, and a 2.30am start gets you to the top before dawn, at about 6.30am (Sri Pada). Duruthu Poya, a public holiday, falls on Friday 22 January 2027 (Central Bank of Sri Lanka), just before one of those busy weekends, so if your dates are flexible, climb midweek.
A safari in Yala
Yala National Park usually draws its biggest crowds from August to March, and drought closed its Blocks 1 and 2 from 14 September to 15 October 2026 (Ada Derana). Check which blocks are open when you book a January drive.
January holidays and festivals in 2027
Every full moon is a poya day (Wikipedia), so the dates move each year. In January 2027:
- Thai Pongal is on Friday 15 January (Central Bank of Sri Lanka). Sri Lankan Tamils celebrate this harvest festival over two days, centred on Thai Pongal day itself (Wikipedia).
- Duruthu Poya is on Friday 22 January. Alcohol can’t be sold on poya days (Wikivoyage), and many shops and businesses close (Wikipedia).
The Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, 11 km north-east of Colombo, holds the Duruthu Maha Perahera every January (Wikipedia). Revived in 1927, the procession runs over three nights (Kelaniya Duruthu Perahara). In 2026 it was held on 8, 9 and 10 January from 8pm, with an enclosure set aside for foreign visitors (Daily Mirror). Dates for 2027 hadn’t been announced when we checked on 29 September 2026.
How busy is Sri Lanka in January?
Very. The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority counted 277,327 visitors in January 2026 and 279,328 in February, the two busiest months of 2026 up to August, against 124,551 in June (SLTDA). Book south-coast and Ella hotels early. You’ll also need an Electronic Travel Authorisation. When we checked on 29 September 2026 it was free for stays of up to 30 days for citizens of 40 countries, Australia, the UK and the US among them, under a scheme that began on 25 May 2026; apply only on the official ETA site.

This loop starts at the airport and ends with four nights on the south coast. Road times come from OpenStreetMap, which assumes no traffic, so we’ve rounded them up.

From Weligama it’s about 29 km to Galle Fort (OpenStreetMap), which usually takes 35 to 45 minutes by road. For Adam’s Peak, swap a night in Nuwara Eliya for one near Dalhousie.
