White water rafting in Sri Lanka centres on Kitulgala, a small town on the Kelani River in Sabaragamuwa Province (Wikipedia). The Love Sri Lanka travel site grades the town’s five rapids at 2 or 3 and puts the run at about 90 minutes (Love Sri Lanka). On 20 October 2026, four operators’ listings priced a rafting run from USD 15.10 a head in a small group to USD 40, and a fifth sold a USD 80 day with abseiling and lunch. Kitulgala is 86 km from Colombo Fort by road (OpenStreetMap). Oura Travel doesn’t run rafting trips, so every price here belongs to someone else.
Key takeaways
- Kitulgala on the Kelani River is where the rafting happens. Lakpura also lists grades for the Sitawaka and Mahaweli rivers.
- Grades depend on who you ask: 2 or 3 for Love Sri Lanka, 2 and 3 for the standard 5 km run and 3 and 4 for the upper 10 km on Lakpura’s pages.
- Listed prices on 20 October 2026 ran from USD 15.10 a head in a group to USD 80 with abseiling, lunch and pick-up.
- SLTDA’s guideline for registering rafting operators sets a minimum age of 14. Most listings we read gave lower limits, from 3 to 10 years, so ask which rule applies.
- The sources disagree on the best months. Sri Lanka Tourism’s own site says November to April only; Love Sri Lanka’s rafting guide says May to December. Ask the operator about the river level a day or two before you go.
Where to go white water rafting in Sri Lanka
Wikipedia describes Kitulgala as a small town in the west of the island and a base for rafting that starts a few kilometres upstream (Wikipedia). Love Sri Lanka calls it one of the wettest places on the island, with the Kelani River splitting the town in two (Love Sri Lanka). That site is run by the Sri Lanka Tourism Alliance, a group from the private tourism sector, according to its own about page (Love Sri Lanka).
Other rivers are rafted too. Lakpura’s rafting page lists the Sitawaka at grade 3 to 4 over 2 to 2.5 hours, and the Mahaweli at grade 3 to 5 over 3 to 3.5 hours (Lakpura). It gives no season or price for either. For other ways to spend a day outdoors, see our things to do in Sri Lanka guide.
The Kitulgala rapids and their grades
We found no official grade for the Kelani: Sri Lanka Tourism’s own site names its rapids but grades none of them. So the table below gives each grade exactly as its source states it, with the length and number of rapids it lists. It reports what each page says, not our assessment of the river.
| Source (date) | Section | Grade as given | Length and rapids |
|---|---|---|---|
| Love Sri Lanka (updated January 2024) | Kitulgala | 2 or 3 | Five rapids, about 90 minutes |
| Lakpura rafting page (read 20 October 2026) | Standard, about 5 km | 2 and 3 | 60 to 90 minutes on the water |
| Lakpura rafting page (read 20 October 2026) | Upper, about 10 km | 3 and 4 | Longer, more technical runs |
| Lakpura upper section listing (read 20 October 2026) | 10 km | Class II, III and IV | 8 major and 5 minor rapids |
| Kitulgala Adventures (read 20 October 2026) | Around 5 km | Not given | 5 major and 4 minor rapids |
| Rafter’s Retreat (read 20 October 2026) | 7 km | Not given | 8 rapids |
Lakpura names three of the rapids on its standard section: Killer Falls, End of the World and Ulhena (Lakpura). On its other rafting page, Lakpura gives the Kelani at Kitulgala as grade 2 to 4 in one line, and 2 to 3 in its table (Lakpura). Sri Lanka Tourism’s undated adventure page lists Virgin’s Breast, Head Chopper, Killer Fall, Rib Cage and Slot and Drop, with no grade for any of them (Sri Lanka Tourism).
The upper section is a different trip. Lakpura’s listing for it asks for prior rafting experience and strong swimming skills, rates it “Extreme” and sets a minimum age of 16 (Lakpura).
Best time for rafting at Kitulgala
The sources disagree, and none of them carries a recent date.
| Source | Date | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Sri Lanka Tourism, adventure page | Undated; read 20 October 2026 | Rafting on the Kelani near Kitulgala from November to April only |
| Love Sri Lanka rafting guide | Updated January 2024 | Best from May to December; heavy rain can make the river too dangerous |
| Love Sri Lanka, film location page | Updated November 2022 | Peak season January to March, cooler with less rain, for water sports |
| Lakpura | Read 20 October 2026 | Runs year-round. November to April: lower water. May to September: higher, many rapids up a grade |
The official site’s months match the low-water months on Lakpura’s page and run against Love Sri Lanka’s rafting guide. Love Sri Lanka’s two pages also point at different months. The Department of Meteorology’s newsletter of November 2025 divides the year into four seasons. March and April bring a first inter-monsoon, and the south-west monsoon holds from May right through to September. A second inter-monsoon fills October and November, before the north-east monsoon brings December, January and February (Department of Meteorology). Our Sri Lanka monsoon guide explains which parts of the island each one wets.
Rain can also stop a trip. GOV.UK’s travel advice page for Sri Lanka, marked current on 20 October, carries an update dated 21 September 2026. That update says floods and landslides are more likely after heavy rain in the inter-monsoon. It adds that transport may be disrupted, and tells travellers to check with their travel provider and follow local authorities (GOV.UK). SLTDA’s guideline expects each operator’s written procedure to cover assessing the weather (SLTDA). So ask about the river on the day, whatever the month.
Rafting in Sri Lanka: prices as listed on 20 October 2026
We read every price below on 20 October 2026. Sellers appear alphabetically, and the table reports their listings, not a ranking or a recommendation. Two rows are GetYourGuide listings, where the “from” price is for one adult on the default booking.
| Operator (listing) | Listed price | What the listing covers |
|---|---|---|
| Beyond Escapes on GetYourGuide | USD 80 a person, taxes and fees included | 6 hours: rafting, waterfall abseiling, buffet lunch, pick-up and drop-off at Kitulgala |
| Go Kitulgala | From USD 30 a person; from USD 40 with lunch | Rafting; a day outing adds lunch. Booked online in advance |
| Kitulgala Adventures | USD 30 a person for 5 km; USD 40 for 7 km | Safety gear, rafts and a safety briefing |
| Lakpura | USD 30.19 for 1 or 2 guests; USD 90.57 for 6 | Private 1-hour session: guide, safety kayaker, helmets, life jackets. No food or transfers |
| Z R I Adventures on GetYourGuide | From USD 22 a person | 2 hours, private for up to 15: rafting, safety gear, training. No meals, pick-up or waterproof bags |
Lakpura’s six-guest price works out at USD 15.10 a head, the figure its booking form shows for groups of two to six (Lakpura). For a standard run, then, the listings ranged from USD 15.10 a head in a group to USD 40.
Check three things in any offer. First, how far you raft: Kitulgala Adventures charges USD 10 more for 7 km than for 5 km. Second, whether lunch and transport are inside the price. Third, whether the price is per person or per group. None of the five listings names the drive from Colombo or Kandy among its inclusions.
Safety rules and minimum ages
The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) links a rafting guideline from its registration page, under water-based adventure activities (SLTDA). The PDF’s own properties date it to January 2025. An older copy linked on the same page, dated May 2023, says the same (SLTDA). The guideline sets out these rules (SLTDA):
- Every trip begins with a direct safety briefing, including how a safety kayaker carries out a rescue.
- Every participant signs a liability waiver and medical form, and anyone with a medical condition must not take part.
- Helmets for everyone, and a properly fastened life jacket of the right size, checked by the instructor.
- Safety kayaks in the immediate vicinity, and at least one raft and one kayak on the water.
- No alcohol or drugs during the trip or for at least six hours before.
- No rafting in the dark, and a minimum age of 14 on all sections of the river.
Registration also asks for a staff list with qualifications, an open water lifeguard certificate, public liability insurance and a first aid certificate for every crew member (SLTDA). In August 2026 an SLTDA source told The Sunday Morning that every provider of a service to tourists must hold the registration or licence that applies (The Morning). SLTDA’s list of registered water sports centres on srilanka.travel had 30 entries on 20 October 2026, and you can search it by name (Sri Lanka Tourism). We have not checked the operators in this guide against it, so look up any operator yourself before you pay.
What the guideline and listings say about age
| Source | Minimum age as listed |
|---|---|
| SLTDA guideline | 14, on all sections |
| Beyond Escapes | Not suitable for children under 8 |
| Kitulgala Adventures | Above 10 |
| Lakpura, 5 km | 10 and above |
| Lakpura, 10 km | 16 |
| Love Sri Lanka | Not considered dangerous above 10, with a guide |
| Z R I Adventures | Not suitable for children under 3 |
Most of those ages are lower than SLTDA’s 14. If you’re travelling with children under 14, put the question to the operator before you book, and read our family activities in Sri Lanka guide for other ideas.
Night rafting is a second difference. Love Sri Lanka’s guide, updated January 2024, describes “Black Rafting” with headlights under a full moon (Love Sri Lanka). SLTDA’s guideline says no rafting should take place in the dark.
Health, swimming and insurance
Love Sri Lanka says an average level of fitness is enough, but advises people with heart conditions or epilepsy to sit out (Love Sri Lanka). Lakpura doesn’t recommend its 5 km run for people with back problems, heart conditions or for pregnant travellers (Lakpura). On swimming, Lakpura calls it a definite advantage on its general page and a requirement on the upper section (Lakpura). Those are the two sites’ own statements, not ours. For the day, Lakpura’s page suggests swimwear or quick-dry shorts, shoes that strap on rather than flip-flops, a change of clothes and a dry bag (Lakpura).
We found no rafting advice on GOV.UK’s Sri Lanka pages when we checked on 20 October 2026. Its “Outdoor activities and adventure tourism” heading held one paragraph, on sea swimming, quoted here unchanged: “Many beaches in Sri Lanka have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of the year. Get advice from your hotel or tour operator before going in the sea.” (GOV.UK). It says nothing there about rivers. On insurance, its summary asks for a policy that covers your planned activities as well as your route and any emergency costs (GOV.UK). So check that your own policy covers rafting.
Getting to Kitulgala
Each distance and planner time below is OpenStreetMap’s, from a run on 20 October 2026. Its times assume empty roads, so the last column is our allowance: its figure taken up to the next half hour, then half an hour more.
| From | Road distance | Planner, empty roads | Allow |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colombo Fort | 86 km | 1 h 44 min | 2 to 2.5 hours |
| Bandaranaike airport | 80 km | 1 h 38 min | 2 to 2.5 hours |
| Kandy | 64 km | 1 h 19 min | 1.5 to 2 hours |
| Nuwara Eliya | 74 km | 1 h 21 min | 1.5 to 2 hours |
| Weligama | 202 km | 3 h 8 min | 3.5 to 4 hours |
So you can raft on a day trip from Colombo or Kandy, or on the way between the coast and the hills. To stay by the river instead, Go Kitulgala listed one and two night stays at its camp on 20 October 2026 (Go Kitulgala), and Rafter’s Retreat’s site has its own accommodation page (Rafter’s Retreat). If Kandy is on your route, our guide to Kandy in one day covers what to see there. For a car with a driver between two stops, our page on what a driver costs in Sri Lanka compares sellers’ published day rates.
If you hope to join the hill-country train afterwards, check which parts are open. A search on 20 October 2026 turned up no report of any train going all the way from Kandy to Ella. Trains from Colombo Fort returned to Peradeniya and Gampola on Friday 2 October (Sunday Times). The Colombo Times said that day that the Peradeniya to Kandy stretch would stay closed until the Peradeniya bridge was finished (Colombo Times). At the Ella end, Nanu Oya to Badulla services restarted on 20 June 2026 (Sunday Times). Our Kandy to Ella train guide tracks the state of each section.
More to do around Kitulgala
The Bridge on the River Kwai, David Lean’s 1957 film, was shot on the Kelani near Kitulgala, and only the bridge’s concrete foundations are left (Wikipedia). Love Sri Lanka dates the bridge explosion scene to 10 March 1957 and says the bridge was taken down after filming (Love Sri Lanka).
Belilena cave lies 8 km from the town, reached on foot through the Makandawa Forest Reserve. Love Sri Lanka says evidence of human life found there is believed to date from as early as 32,000 years ago (Love Sri Lanka).
Birders come for the forest, which Wikipedia says holds most of the rainforest species found at Sinharaja, though in lower numbers. The Serendib scops owl was first heard calling here (Wikipedia).
Love Sri Lanka also lists abseiling and waterfalls as reasons to visit (Love Sri Lanka). For walking further up in the hills, our hiking trails in Sri Lanka guide runs from easy to hard.
Questions about white water rafting in Sri Lanka
How much does rafting in Sri Lanka cost?
On 20 October 2026, the lowest listed price for a standard run was USD 15.10 a head for two to six people (Lakpura). The highest was USD 40 a person for 7 km (Kitulgala Adventures). Love Sri Lanka’s rafting guide says May to December, but its film location page says January to March. Lakpura says the water is lower from November to April and higher from May to September (Lakpura). Ask the operator about the river level close to your date.
Is there a minimum age for Kitulgala rafting?

What does Sri Lanka Tourism say about Kitulgala rafting?
Sri Lanka Tourism’s official site, srilanka.travel, gives one line: rafting on the Kelani near Kitulgala from November to April only, with its rapids named but not graded (Sri Lanka Tourism). SLTDA’s rafting guideline sets the safety rules and a minimum age of 14 (SLTDA). Its list of registered water sports centres is on srilanka.travel too (Sri Lanka Tourism). Love Sri Lanka, quoted above, is run by a private-sector tourism alliance (Love Sri Lanka).
Can you go rafting at Kitulgala on a day trip from Colombo?
Yes, by road. The route planner gives 86 km from Colombo Fort and 1 hour 44 minutes on empty roads, so allow 2 to 2.5 hours for each leg (OpenStreetMap). Add the briefing and time on the water: 60 to 90 minutes on Lakpura’s standard section (Lakpura).
Adding Kitulgala to a trip with us
We don’t sell rafting. Our team is in Weligama, and what we arrange is private travel by car with a driver-guide. If you want Kitulgala on your route, book the river with the operator you choose, then send us your dates and the two stops either side of it.
Every listing, guideline and route on this page was opened on 20 October 2026. Operators change prices, ages and trips without notice, and the river changes with the rain, so check each one again before you book.
