Surfing in Sri Lanka in July means crossing to the east coast. From May to September the south-west monsoon brings heavy rain to the south-west coast (Sri Lanka Tourism), which takes Weligama and the rest of our home coast out of its surf season for most of that time. Arugam Bay is then mid-season: July and August are when its waves are at their best and the town is at its busiest (Wikivoyage). We’re based in Weligama and plan the trip east for guests.

Which coast works in July
Sri Lanka’s two coasts take turns, and that shapes a whole July trip to Sri Lanka, not just the surf. The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau’s weather page puts the south-west monsoon at May to September, with heavy rain on the south-west coast and in the hills (Sri Lanka Tourism). The same page names Arugam Bay as one of the dry-zone places to head for instead. Love Sri Lanka puts the best surf on the south-west coast from October to April, and in the east from April onwards (Love Sri Lanka).
The edges of the east-coast season vary by source: Wikivoyage counts April to October (Wikivoyage), Love Sri Lanka’s surf map July to the end of September (Love Sri Lanka). Either way, July falls well inside it. For both coasts across the whole year, see our guide to surfing in Sri Lanka.
The south coast from June to September
Weligama’s small, predictable waves suit beginners, but Love Sri Lanka gives its surf season as September to the end of May, Midigama’s as October to April and Mirissa’s as November to March (Love Sri Lanka). Wikivoyage’s Sri Lanka page puts surfing on the west and south coasts at November to April (Wikivoyage). Even in season, Wikivoyage warns that the current off Weligama can be strong and unpredictable (Wikivoyage).
So we don’t build a July surf trip around our own bay. If you’re on the south coast in these months anyway, ask a surf school about the day’s conditions before you go in. When its season comes round again, you’ll find the bay covered in our Weligama beach guide.
Arugam Bay’s breaks and who they suit
Main Point and Baby Point are in the bay itself. Elephant Rock, Peanut Farm, Panama and Okanda lie to the south, and Pottuvil Point is to the north. You can hire a board almost anywhere in town, and tuk-tuks will take you and the board out to the nearer points (Wikivoyage). Crocodile Rock causes some confusion. Wikivoyage treats it as another name for Elephant Rock and says it’s used mostly by beginners from sunrise. Love Sri Lanka describes it as a separate, quieter point a couple of hundred metres south of the bay, fine for all levels and best in July and August (Love Sri Lanka). Neither grades Peanut Farm, Panama or Okanda, so ask a surf school in town which of them is working. The town itself is covered in our Arugam Bay guide.
Learning to surf in July
First-timers should go east too rather than wait for Weligama’s season. Baby Point is the gentlest start, as its wave begins and ends over sand (Love Sri Lanka). Elephant Rock has surf schools (Love Sri Lanka), but Love Sri Lanka’s breaks guide calls its waves quite challenging, so learn there with an instructor rather than on your own. July and August are the busiest months (Wikivoyage), so get in early, before the easy breaks fill up. Take lessons for the first few sessions, since an instructor will know which spot is gentlest that morning. Watch Main Point from the beach.
Getting to Arugam Bay from the airport or the south coast
There’s no railway to Arugam Bay (Wikivoyage), so plan on a long drive.
- From the airport at Katunayake: about 340 km, usually 6 to 7 hours (OpenStreetMap).
- From Weligama: about 257 km, usually 4.5 to 5.5 hours (OpenStreetMap).
- From Ella: about 132 km, usually 2.5 to 3 hours (OpenStreetMap).
Buses run from Colombo, but most stop at Pottuvil, about 4 km short of most guesthouses (Wikivoyage). Elephants often move between the Lahugala and Kumana national parks near the bay (Wikipedia), which is one reason we’d plan the drive to arrive in daylight. With a private car and driver you can also break the trip with a night in the hills, and if you’re bringing boards, our vans have room for them.
Pairing the surf with a safari
Kumana National Park, called Yala East until 2006, borders Yala on the south-east coast (Wikipedia). In Wikivoyage’s August 2024 listing, jeep trips from Arugam Bay left around 5 to 6am and took about six hours, including roughly 45 minutes on the road each way (Wikivoyage). Migrating birds reach the Kumana swamp in their tens of thousands between April and July (Wikipedia), which suits a June or July surf trip. In early September 2026 the Department of Wildlife Conservation closed Kumana’s campsites and cancelled bookings because of the drought (Newswire). That closure applied to campsites, but check that day drives are running before you plan around one.
For elephants closer to town, Lahugala Kitulana National Park borders the far side of Pottuvil Lagoon (Wikivoyage).
Yala is further away than it looks on a map. Tissamaharama, the town next to Yala where guesthouses and hotels book jeep tours (Wikivoyage), is about 152 km from Arugam Bay, usually 3 to 3.5 hours by road (OpenStreetMap). It works best as a stop on the way back to the south coast. Yala’s Blocks 1 and 2 have also been closed for drought since 14 September 2026 and are due to stay shut until 15 October (Ada Derana), which matters if you’re travelling before mid-October 2026. Staying safe in the water
The UK Foreign Office warns that many Sri Lankan beaches have dangerous surf or rip tides at some times of year, and tells visitors to ask their hotel or tour operator before going into the sea (GOV.UK). At Arugam Bay, Main Point breaks close to rocks and onto coral, and Love Sri Lanka advises checking the tide and swell before you paddle out (Love Sri Lanka).
Then there are the lagoons. At Crocodile Rock, Love Sri Lanka tells visitors to watch for crocodiles and the warning signs (Love Sri Lanka), and locals advise against swimming in the lagoon behind Elephant Rock (Love Sri Lanka). Wild elephants and crocodiles do sometimes attack people, the Foreign Office notes (GOV.UK). Pack a rash vest and high-factor sun cream.

June is the quieter start of the east-coast surf season, and our guide to Sri Lanka in June covers the rest of that month. Is July a good month to surf in Sri Lanka?
Yes, on the east coast. July falls in the middle of Arugam Bay’s season, and Wikivoyage names July and August as the months when its waves are best (Wikivoyage). The south-west coast is in its monsoon then, so save Weligama for November to April.
Can you surf in Weligama in July?
It’s out of season then. None of the sources we checked puts Weligama’s surf season in July: Love Sri Lanka gives it as September to May (Love Sri Lanka), and Wikivoyage puts the south coast at November to April (Wikivoyage).
