Where to Stay in Weligama: Areas, Hotels and Distances

Where to stay in Weligama comes down to what you want within walking distance. Six of the surf schools OpenStreetMap marks sit side by side in the middle of the bay, about 670 m to 960 m east of the railway station as the crow flies (OpenStreetMap). The map places most of the bay’s hostels in the town centre and along that surf stretch, with hotels such as the Marriott further east towards Pelena. Villas and resorts on the western headlands and in the inland hills are roughly 2 to 3 km from the station, so you’d travel by tuk tuk or car. We measured every area on the map and dated every price and rating.

Weligama’s areas at a glance

We divided the bay into six areas of our own and measured them on OpenStreetMap on 16 October 2026 (OpenStreetMap). For each coastal area, the figures describe the accommodation the map marks there. Inland, they come from the four places the map marks more than 700 m from the sand, two village points and the Google Maps pins of three hotels. Every distance is a straight line, so walking routes are longer.

The map is not a complete register. It marks about 100 places to stay between Midigama and the eastern headland, a few of them twice. By contrast, Booking.com’s Weligama page listed 924 hotels and places to stay on 16 October 2026 (Booking.com).

The surf-school stretch and Pelena

This is the middle and eastern part of the bay, where OpenStreetMap marks six surf schools in a row along the beach (OpenStreetMap). It also marks three surf points at the west end of the beach, about 550 m south-west of the station (OpenStreetMap). Most of the accommodation the map marks here sits between the A2 and the sand. Hangtime Hostel, for instance, is 51 m from the mapped beach and about 630 m east of the station (OpenStreetMap). Its own website describes a combination of dormitories and private rooms (Hangtime Hostel).

Further east, the Weligama Bay Marriott stands 87 m from the sand and 1.1 km from the station (OpenStreetMap). Its neighbour, Weligama Bay Resort, gives its address as Matara Road, Pelena (Weligama Bay Resort). Rise, whose website lists an Italian restaurant, a B&B and a shop, also uses Pelena in its address (Rise).

If road or railway noise would bother you, notice what the map shows behind these hotels. Across the bay, the A2 runs about 90 to 240 m from the mapped sand, and east of the surf schools the coast railway comes within about 170 to 210 m (OpenStreetMap). We found no published source on traffic or train noise, so ask the property directly.

The town centre and the station

Weligama station is about 400 m from the sand and 210 m from the A2 (OpenStreetMap). Sri Lanka Railways’ station list places it 142.8 km from Colombo Fort, between Kumbalgama and Polwathumodara (Sri Lanka Railways). The accommodation mapped here is 260 to 430 m from the station, and the route planner puts the surf schools about 15 minutes away on foot (route).

Hostels are concentrated here on the map, including Spindrift, 325 m from the station (OpenStreetMap). Surasa Beach Resort occupies the western edge of the centre, about 60 m from the sand (OpenStreetMap).

This is also where the two maps disagree. On 16 October 2026 Google Maps showed Beatroot Hostel as permanently closed and Centhara Beach Weligama as temporarily closed, although OpenStreetMap still marks both (Google Maps; Google Maps). Wikivoyage’s accommodation list still gives Beatroot a price of EUR 9, last updated in October 2021 (Wikivoyage).

The west end and the coast beyond

Taprobane to the point

West of the centre, the beach curves past Taprobane, the small island just offshore. According to Love Sri Lanka, its villa is now a five-bedroom boutique hotel, easily reached at low tide (Love Sri Lanka). On 16 October 2026 the island’s own website said it was not taking bookings while the property was under maintenance (Taprobane Island). We measured the island 950 m from the station (OpenStreetMap).

Guest houses and hotels continue from there towards the point, a median 126 m from the sand. One of them, Athma Weligama, is mapped 43 m from the beach near the island, yet on 16 October 2026 Google Maps showed it as permanently closed (Google Maps).

The west coast towards Midigama

Beyond the headland, the coast road leaves the bay, and the map marks hotels and guest houses along the coast 2.2 to 5 km from Weligama station. Cape Weligama is mapped on the headland itself, 2.8 km from the station as the crow flies (OpenStreetMap). By road it is 3.7 km to the station, about 5 minutes by car on empty roads (route). Barberyn Beach Ayurveda Resort, 2.9 km out, includes Ayurveda in its name on Google Maps (Google Maps).

Kumbalgama and Midigama have their own stations on the same line, at 139.2 km and 137.7 km from Colombo Fort (Sri Lanka Railways). Midigama is a 5 km drive: 6 minutes on the route planner with empty roads, so allow 10 to 15 minutes (route).

The east headland and the Mirissa side

Polwathumodara, at the eastern end of the bay, has its own station at 146.2 km (Sri Lanka Railways). The map marks six places to stay there, 2.5 to 3 km from Weligama station. Mandara Resort is one of them, 59 m from the sand (OpenStreetMap), and Google Maps lists it as Mandara Resort Mirissa (Google Maps).

Inland: Kadewatta and the Wattakgoda hills

North of the railway, the map shows villages rather than beachfront. The Kadewatta village point is about 1.2 km from the sand (OpenStreetMap), and the route planner gives roughly 30 minutes on foot from there to the surf schools (route).

Further inland, Google Maps has villas and resorts that OpenStreetMap does not mark. Villa Hillcrest’s pin is about 2.1 km from the sand, and the walking route to the station is 2.4 km, about 35 minutes (route). Malabar Hill describes itself as a “short tuk tuk ride from the beach” (Malabar Hill). Walking to the surf schools from there is 4.4 km on the route planner, about an hour (route).

Sapiens Home is closer to the coast, about 550 m from the sand by its Google Maps pin, and about 20 minutes on foot from the surf schools (route).

Weligama hotels near the beach and inland: listings

The table runs west to east along the coast and then inland; it has no row for the west end. Each type and rating is what the property’s Google Maps entry showed on 16 October 2026. Positions are our own measurements on OpenStreetMap, or from the Google Maps pin (marked “Google pin”) where the map has no entry. These are listings only: we have not ranked them, and we endorse none of them.

Distances are straight lines from Weligama station. The star classes are Google Maps’ labels, and other sources can disagree: OpenStreetMap, for example, tags Mandara as 3-star (OpenStreetMap). Rise had only one Google review when we looked, so it is not in the table.

What a night costs: Booking.com for one dated night

Room rates change daily, so we chose one night in January and searched it once. For 15 to 16 January 2027, two adults and one room, Booking.com showed 646 properties available in Weligama (Booking.com). The table gives the lowest price displayed for each property type when we searched on 16 October 2026.

Booking.com’s “Weligama” reaches beyond the bay: the cheapest property of all, at LKR 1,987, was listed 3.8 km from the centre and has Midigama in its name. The same search counted 76 properties with a swimming pool, 102 villas and 289 entire homes and apartments. For comparison, the Marriott’s page showed a Superior King Room with Ocean View that night from LKR 132,169, plus LKR 45,453 in taxes and charges (Booking.com). Treat all of this as a snapshot of one search, not a forecast.

Getting there and getting around

The international airport at Katunayake is 171 km away on the route planner, usually 2.5 to 3 hours by car (route). The Colombo airport to Weligama guide sets the private transfer beside the taxi, the bus and the train.

Locally, Wikivoyage says buses on the Colombo to Matara coast road come by at least every 20 minutes, at any hour (Wikivoyage). On 16 October 2026 Sri Lanka Railways’ timetable page displayed a notice that it was being redeveloped, so confirm train times at the station (Sri Lanka Railways).

GOV.UK’s Sri Lanka advice, updated 21 September 2026 and still current on 16 October, says two things about the sea. Surf and rip tides at many of the island’s beaches are dangerous during certain parts of the year, and you should ask your hotel or tour operator for advice before swimming (GOV.UK). It depends on what you want nearby. Staying along the surf-school stretch puts the surf schools within about 1.2 km, while the town centre is closest to the station. The headlands and the inland hills are roughly 2 to 3 km from the station, so you’d need a car or a tuk tuk.

Are there hotels on the beach in Weligama?
