Sri Lanka in June is in the middle of its south-west monsoon. The Department of Meteorology dates that monsoon from May to September, bringing heavy rain to the low country in the south-west and to the hill country’s western slopes (Department of Meteorology). The east coast, the north and the Cultural Triangle are the dry side: Trincomalee, Jaffna and Anuradhapura average about two or three rain days in June, while Colombo averages about 15 (WMO climate normals). We work from Weligama, on the south coast, and for June we’d point you east and north instead.

Sri Lanka weather in June: the wet side and the dry side
When the south-west winds hit the central highlands, they drop heavy rain on the slopes and the south-west, and the leeward east and north-east get little (Wikipedia).

How June compares with May and July
On the dry side, June is the pick. In these normals it has the lowest average rainfall of any month at Trincomalee, Pottuvil, Anuradhapura and Jaffna, and Trincomalee’s rain days more than halve from May to June (WMO climate normals). On the wet side, Colombo dries out steadily (314 mm in May, 197 mm in June, 123 mm in July), but Galle still gets rain on 15 to 17 days in each of those months (WMO climate normals). May has Vesak (Sri Lanka in May), and July starts Arugam Bay’s two busiest months (Wikivoyage), the peak our Sri Lanka in July guide is built around.
Where to spend June in Sri Lanka
The east coast: Trincomalee and Pasikudah
Wikivoyage recommends Trincomalee from April to September and says a big offshore reef makes its shallow beaches good for swimming (Wikivoyage). Day trips to Pigeon Island leave from Nilaveli, 16 km north of the town, though Wikivoyage says most of the coral had died by 2025 (Wikivoyage). Love Sri Lanka puts the best snorkelling there in May to September (Love Sri Lanka).
Pasikudah’s beach runs for about a mile, a reef keeps the surf gentle, and the water is shallow enough to walk out hundreds of yards (Love Sri Lanka). For children, or anyone who wants to swim rather than surf, it’s our pick on this coast.
The Cultural Triangle: start at 7am
The Central Cultural Fund’s site counters sell tickets from 7am to 5pm daily (Central Cultural Fund). With afternoon highs near 33°C at Anuradhapura (WMO climate normals), go at opening time and rest through the midday heat. Habarana and Dambulla, the bases our Cultural Triangle guide suggests, keep the daily drives short.
Love Sri Lanka says June leaves the ancient cities quiet compared with peak season (Love Sri Lanka); Poson is the exception.
The hills: Ella’s side is drier
Bandarawela and Badulla, the two weather stations nearest Ella, average 91 mm of June rain on about seven days and 52 mm on five, against 168 mm on 15 days at Nuwara Eliya (WMO climate normals). In June we’d spend the hill nights around Ella. Adam’s Peak is out of its December to May pilgrimage season, and Sri Pada says cloud hides the summit for much of May to October (Sri Pada).
Safaris in June
Our Safari Excursion puts you in a private jeep in Yala or Udawalawe, and the pickup from your hotel is early in the morning. Wikipedia puts Udawalawe’s resident herd at about 250 elephants, drawn by the reservoir (Wikipedia).
Love Sri Lanka gives May to September for Minneriya’s elephant Gathering (Love Sri Lanka). The best months are August and September, and a big herd is most likely on a 3pm to 6pm drive (Love Sri Lanka). In June we’d treat a big Minneriya herd as a bonus. Near Arugam Bay, tens of thousands of migrating birds arrive at Kumana National Park’s swamps between April and July (Love Sri Lanka).
Surfing in Sri Lanka in June
Arugam Bay has surf in June, but sources differ on when the season starts. Wikivoyage says April to October (Wikivoyage) and Love Sri Lanka’s Arugam Bay page April to September (Love Sri Lanka), but Love Sri Lanka’s island-wide surf map starts it in July (Love Sri Lanka). Love Sri Lanka’s breaks guide picks the end of June for Pottuvil Point (Love Sri Lanka). Its surf map, though, counts Pottuvil Point and Whisky Point as the bay’s most challenging breaks (Love Sri Lanka), so beginners should start at the easier breaks listed in our guide to surfing in Sri Lanka in July. The same map gives Weligama September to the end of May, so June is off-season on our own coast (Love Sri Lanka).
Poson Poya in June 2027
Poson celebrates the coming of Buddhism to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC, and among Buddhist holidays only Vesak matters more (Wikipedia). On the Central Bank’s 2027 list, Poson Full Moon Poya Day is Friday 18 June, a bank and public holiday (Central Bank of Sri Lanka).
The biggest ceremonies are at Mihintale and Anuradhapura, which draw thousands of pilgrims dressed in white, and the celebrations last five days to a week (Wikipedia). Mihintale, about 13 km from Anuradhapura, is by tradition the peak where the monk Mahinda, son of the Indian emperor Ashoka, met King Devanampiya Tissa (Love Sri Lanka), and 1,840 granite steps climb to the summit (Wikipedia). Love Sri Lanka describes barefoot pilgrims on the old steps and roadside dansal stalls handing out free food and drink (Love Sri Lanka). At Buddhist sites you take off your shoes and hat, and women should cover their shoulders (Wikivoyage).
On poya days you can’t buy alcohol, and drinking in public is forbidden too (Wikivoyage). Some parts of the island also ban meat and alcohol sales during the festival (Wikipedia). In 2026 taverns closed island-wide from the evening of 28 June until 30 June (Newswire). Liquor outlets in Mihintale, Medawachchiya, Nuwaragam Palatha Central, Nuwaragam Palatha East and Mahavilachchiya stayed shut for the whole State Poson Festival, 25 June to 3 July (Newswire). Look for the 2027 notice nearer the time.
The south coast in June
We wouldn’t plan a June beach week on our home coast. Galle averages 184 mm of rain on about 17 days in June; Hambantota, at the drier south-eastern end, gets 41 mm on five or six (WMO climate normals). Mirissa’s whale-watching season runs from November to April, when Love Sri Lanka says the sea is calmest (Love Sri Lanka). The UK Foreign Office warns of dangerous surf or rip tides on many beaches at certain times of year and advises asking your hotel or tour operator before a swim (GOV.UK). Our own advice, in the month-by-month weather guide, is to stay out of the sea along the west and south coasts between May and September, the south-west monsoon months.
Hill trains in 2027: confirm first
In late 2025 Cyclone Ditwah damaged roughly 70% of Sri Lanka’s railway (Wikivoyage). Trains through Ella, between Nanu Oya and Badulla, were back from 20 June 2026, but nothing ran between Rambukkana and Nanu Oya in early September (Newsfirst). From 2 October trains were due to run only as far as Peradeniya, near Kandy, and Gampola (Newswire). In late August a senior railway engineer said upcountry services should be fully back by the end of 2026 (Sunday Times), so check current services with Sri Lanka Railways first.

From Udawalawe to the airport is usually 4 to 4.5 hours by road (OpenStreetMap), so book an evening flight. If your dates cover 18 June 2027, either time nights 1 and 2 for Poson or keep Anuradhapura out of that week. With a private car and driver, the long east-coast legs are easier: our drivers take about ten hours off between driving days, and the vans have room for surfboards.
Questions about Sri Lanka in June
Is June a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
It is if you’re heading for the east coast, the north or the Cultural Triangle. At Trincomalee, Anuradhapura, Jaffna and Pottuvil, June has the lowest average rainfall of any month (WMO climate normals). It’s quiet, too: SLTDA counted 124,551 arrivals in June 2026, the lowest of any month to August, and 138,241 in June 2025, when only May was lower (SLTDA).
Is it rainy in Sri Lanka in June?
In the south-west and the high hills, yes: Colombo, Galle and Nuwara Eliya average rain on about half of June’s days (WMO climate normals). Love Sri Lanka says monsoon rain usually comes in short bursts, mostly in the afternoon (Love Sri Lanka).
Can you surf in Sri Lanka in June?
Yes, at Arugam Bay, inside the April to October season Wikivoyage gives (Wikivoyage). Weligama, Midigama and Mirissa, on the south coast, don’t start their seasons until September at the earliest (Love Sri Lanka).
