How to Get to Yala National Park: Routes and Drive Times

Yala safaris start from Tissamaharama. Road times from Colombo, the airport, the south coast, Ella, Kandy and Arugam Bay, with the official bus routes, where the railway stops, flights, and the gate.

How to Get to Yala National Park: Routes and Drive Times

How to get to Yala National Park starts with Tissamaharama, the park’s nearest town (Love Sri Lanka). Its hotels and guest houses sell the jeep drives (Wikivoyage). From Colombo Fort it’s 249 km by road, usually 4 to 5 hours, most of it on the Southern Expressway (route planner). From Ella it’s 90 km, usually 2 to 3 hours (route planner). No train goes there: the coast line ends at Beliatta (Wikipedia). Block 1’s gate is at Palatupana (Ada Derana).

Key takeaways

  • Base yourself in Tissamaharama. The Palatupana gate is 17.5 km on, usually 30 to 45 minutes by road.
  • By car: about 4 to 5 hours from Colombo or the airport, 2 to 3 hours from Weligama, Mirissa or Ella.
  • By train: only as far as Beliatta, 81 km short of Tissamaharama, then the road.
  • By bus: the long-distance routes in the official fare tables run to Kataragama. Ask whether yours stops at Tissamaharama.
  • Drought closed the park’s two main blocks on 14 September 2026, and their reopening was set for 16 October. Searching on 24 October 2026, we found nothing confirming it.

Drive times to Yala from each starting point

We ran each route through OpenStreetMap’s planner on 24 October 2026. Because it models empty roads, we rounded each figure up into the range a driver would usually quote, never starting below the planner’s own time.

Colombo or the airport to Yala by road

The Southern Expressway runs 222 km from Kottawa, on Colombo’s edge, to Mattala. Its newest section, Matara to Hambantota, opened on 23 February 2020 (Wikipedia). The route planner keeps you on it for 193 km from Colombo Fort, as far as its end near Mattala. Minor roads then take you to the A2, the Hambantota to Wellawaya road, which you leave at Pannegamuwa for Tissamaharama (route planner). The airport adds two more expressways and about 30 km.

Tuk-tuks and motorcycles aren’t allowed on the expressways, says the Road Development Authority’s user guide (RDA). So the fast route needs a car, a van or an expressway bus. GOV.UK’s travel advice (its latest update was on 21 September 2026) says some roads, mainly in remote areas, may be in poor condition. It calls the driving erratic, says road accidents are frequent, especially after dark, and asks drivers to watch for pedestrians and animals on busy roads. Riding a motorbike can be especially dangerous, it adds (GOV.UK). A pre-dawn drive from Colombo for a 6am gate is exactly that kind of night driving. In our view the better plan is to arrive in Tissamaharama the afternoon before. GOV.UK’s warnings page adds that fuel is rationed: each vehicle gets a weekly allowance, and the government has promised special measures for hotels and tour firms (GOV.UK).

Straight off a flight, a night on the south coast splits the trip in two. Our Colombo airport to Weligama guide covers that first leg, its toll and the taxi counters.

From the south coast: Galle, Weligama and Mirissa

The coast towns join the same expressway. From Weligama the planner gives 122 km, and from Mirissa 120 km, usually 2 to 3 hours to Tissamaharama (route planner). Galle is 143 km, usually 2.5 to 3 hours (route planner).

Weligama to the Palatupana gate itself is 139 km, which we’d allow 2.5 to 3.5 hours for (route planner). Daytime visits under the park regulations begin at 6am (Gazette 2292/11). To be at the gate when it opens, you’d leave Weligama between about 2.30 and 3.30am.

From Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy or Arugam Bay

Ella is the closest of the hill towns. The road drops through the Ella Gap on the A23 to Wellawaya, then follows the A2 south to Pannegamuwa. There it turns east for Tissamaharama: 90 km in all, usually 2 to 3 hours (route planner). Going straight to the gate is 107 km, usually 2.5 to 3 hours (route planner). Our Ella travel guide has the town itself.

Nuwara Eliya is 150 km away by Haputale and Wellawaya, usually 3 to 4 hours (route planner). Kandy is 223 km, usually 5 to 6 hours on the same hill roads (route planner).

From Arugam Bay the planner runs 154 km, usually 3 to 4 hours, west on the A4 and then south on the Buttala road towards Kataragama (route planner). Ada Derana reported on 28 September 2026 that the Kataragama to Buttala road falls within Block 2 of Yala. About eight wild elephants there have reportedly learned to stop vehicles for food. The Department of Wildlife Conservation stressed that getting out of vehicles and feeding wild animals is illegal (Ada Derana).

Is there a train to Yala?

No. The coast line from Colombo Fort through Galle and Matara ends at Beliatta (Wikipedia). That last stretch from Matara was handed to the public on 8 April 2019 (Daily Mirror). Wikipedia describes later phases to Hambantota and on to Kataragama. We searched on 24 October 2026 and found no 2026 report giving a date for trains beyond Beliatta. Wikivoyage’s Tissamaharama page agrees that no trains reach it yet (Wikivoyage).

From Beliatta station the road to Tissamaharama is 81 km, usually 1.5 to 2 hours (route planner). On 24 October 2026 the railway’s timetable page was offline, with a notice citing an upgrade (Sri Lanka Railways). Ask at the station for times.

The hill-country line does reach Ella, and from there Yala is a road trip. Trains between Nanu Oya and Badulla, the section through Ella, resumed on 20 June 2026 after cyclone repairs (Sunday Times). Nearer Kandy, crews were still repairing the Gampola to Nawalapitiya stretch and the line between Hatton and Nanu Oya, the Colombo Times said on 2 October (Colombo Times). Searching on 24 October 2026, we found no train running the whole way from Kandy to Ella. Our Kandy to Ella train guide follows that line and the open section from Nanu Oya.

By bus: the official routes to Kataragama

The long-distance buses in the National Transport Commission’s tables run to Kataragama, not to Tissamaharama. A 2015 listing on Wikivoyage’s Kataragama page puts Tissamaharama an hour away by bus (Wikivoyage). Its Tissamaharama page says regular buses come from most of the main southern towns, about 4 to 5 hours from Galle (Wikivoyage). We read these routes in the Commission’s fare tables, in force since 6 July 2026.

Fares are for the full route, as printed in the inter-provincial table and the expressway table. Neither prints a fare to Tissamaharama itself, nor the stops along each route. So ask at the bus stand whether a Kataragama bus calls at Tissamaharama. If it doesn’t, you’ll have that hour’s bus ride back from Kataragama.

From Ella, Wikivoyage’s page, last edited in August 2026, says buses go south through the Ella Gap to Wellawaya, where you can change. The April 2025 list for Ella’s bus stand includes four daily departures for Kataragama, and for Yala the page suggests the Matara or Galle bus, changing at Pannegamuwa (Wikivoyage). On buses, GOV.UK’s advice is blunt: public ones tend to go fast, seldom yield and are often badly kept, and serious crashes have happened. Tourist coaches are generally better driven, it says, but not always (GOV.UK).

Flying: Weerawila and Mattala

Two airports lie near the park. Cinnamon Air’s winter page names its Hambantota stop as the Weerawila domestic airport, serving Yala and Tissamaharama. On 24 October 2026 its timetable for 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027 listed a daily 11:00 flight from Bandaranaike airport. It lands at 12:30, after a stop at Sigiriya. The return leaves at 12:45 and calls at Koggala (Cinnamon Air). The fares on that page still carried last season’s dates, so ask the airline for a price.

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport is the other one. Wikipedia says Cinnamon Air flew from there to Colombo from May 2016 but stopped in 2018. Its airline list, last edited on 26 September 2026, shows only seasonal flights, most of them charters from Russian cities (Wikipedia). For most visitors the road is still the way in.

From Tissamaharama to the park gate

Love Sri Lanka’s Yala page, last updated in May 2023, lists four gate locations: Galge, Yala West, Palatupana and Katagamuwa. Of those, Palatupana and Katagamuwa are the more popular, as the two that lead to Blocks 1 and 2 (Love Sri Lanka). Ada Derana’s December 2025 report on reopenings named Palatupana as Block 1’s entrance (Ada Derana). OpenStreetMap marks the Palatupana Entrance (OpenStreetMap), 17.5 km by road from Tissamaharama (route planner).

The 2022 park regulations set daytime visiting hours at 6am to 6pm, and each permit covers one entry (Gazette 2292/11). In the tourist season one daytime entry is USD 25 for each foreign adult; in the regular period it is USD 20. A vehicle carrying foreign visitors adds a USD 10 service fee, and taxes come on top (Gazette 2292/11). Most Tissamaharama tours leave at 05:00 or 14:30, says Wikivoyage (Wikivoyage). Our Sri Lanka safari guide compares Yala with the other parks, month by month.

Yala’s 2026 closure and the announced reopening

On 14 September 2026 the wildlife department shut the two main blocks because of dry weather, planning a month’s closure. It said the aim was to spare animals disturbance while they searched for food and water (Ada Derana). Blocks 3, 4, 5 and 6 were kept open to visitors, the Daily Mirror reported (Daily Mirror). A Daily Mirror report dated 12 October said park authorities would let local and foreign visitors back in from 6am on 16 October (Daily Mirror). Ada Derana gave the same date for Blocks 1 and 2 on 13 October (Ada Derana). Newswire added that bungalow and campsite bookings would open from 1 November (Newswire). We searched again on 24 October 2026, including Newswire’s list of Yala stories (Newswire). We found the announcements but no report confirming that the gates did reopen on 16 October. Treat it as announced, and ask your hotel the day you book.

Hiring a car and driver for the trip

In our view a car with a driver is the simplest way to link Yala with the hills and the coast. Prices vary with the days and the vehicle, and we’ve compared dated listings for what a car and driver costs in Sri Lanka. If wildlife photography is the point of the trip, our wildlife photography guide covers light and gate times. For the elephant gathering at Minneriya instead, see our Minneriya safari guide.

Oura Travel is a small team in Weligama that plans private tours. Our Safari Excursion page describes a hotel collection early in the morning, then a jeep with its own driver, kept to your group, in Yala or Udawalawe. The page adds that transport from your location is charged on top of the jeep.
