Weligama or Mirissa comes down to what you want from the sea. Love Sri Lanka’s surf map says Weligama’s small, predictable breaks mainly suit novices, while Mirissa’s bigger reef breaks need skill and confidence (Love Sri Lanka). Mirissa also has the harbour the whale boats leave from (Raja & the Whales), about 500 m from its sand on OpenStreetMap (OpenStreetMap). The two towns are 5 km apart by road (OpenStreetMap). So pick the base for the thing you’ll do most, and ride over to the other.
Key takeaways
- For surfing, Love Sri Lanka sends beginners to Weligama and the more experienced to Mirissa (Love Sri Lanka).
- Love Sri Lanka’s whale page puts Mirissa’s season at November to April, and promises no sighting even in those months (Love Sri Lanka).
- On 16 October 2026 we measured about 4 km of sand around Weligama Bay and 1.2 km end to end at Mirissa Beach on OpenStreetMap (Weligama; Mirissa). Love Sri Lanka’s 2020 figure for Weligama Bay is 2 km (Love Sri Lanka).
- By rail, Mirissa station is 4.7 km past Weligama (Sri Lanka Railways), but it stands about 1.9 km from Mirissa’s sand (OpenStreetMap).
- Neither beach comes with a safety promise from us. GOV.UK’s swimming advice is quoted word for word in the section on the sea.

How far apart are Weligama and Mirissa?
From Weligama’s centre to Mirissa is 5 km by road. The route planner gives 7 minutes on empty roads, and we’d allow 10 to 15 (OpenStreetMap). Love Sri Lanka’s 2020 family surfing page puts the towns roughly 20 minutes apart (Love Sri Lanka). Mirissa’s fishing harbour is 6 km from Weligama on the same planner (OpenStreetMap). We also measured about 2 km in a straight line from the eastern end of Weligama’s sand to the nearest point of Mirissa Beach (OpenStreetMap).
Sri Lanka Railways lists Weligama at 142.824 km from Colombo Fort, Polwathumodara at 146.248 km and Mirissa at 147.556 km (Sri Lanka Railways). So Mirissa does have a station, 4.7 km down the line from Weligama. On the map, however, Mirissa station sits about 1.9 km from the nearest sand of Mirissa Beach (OpenStreetMap), and Polwathumodara about 2.2 km (OpenStreetMap). Wikipedia puts the town itself roughly 2 km west of Mirissa station (Wikipedia). In contrast, Weligama station is 400 m from its bay (OpenStreetMap). Wikivoyage’s Mirissa page puts Weligama 7 km away. It suggests the train there and a tuk tuk for the last stretch, and adds that buses between Matara and Weligama or Galle stop in Mirissa (Wikivoyage).
We can’t give you train times. On 16 October 2026 the railway’s schedule page still showed a notice, last updated on 18 June 2026, that the page was offline for an upgrade (Sri Lanka Railways).
From Colombo’s airport the road legs are 171 km to Weligama and 176 km to Mirissa. The planner’s times are 136 and 142 minutes, so plan on 2.5 to 3 hours to either (Weligama route; Mirissa route).
A long bay and a short curve
OpenStreetMap draws Weligama’s sand as three adjoining stretches. We measured them end to end on 16 October 2026 at 1.41 km, 1.83 km and 0.80 km, about 4 km in all (OpenStreetMap). Only the western one carries the name Weligama Beach. Love Sri Lanka’s 2020 family surfing page gives a shorter figure: a 2 km stretch of shallow beach (Love Sri Lanka). The layout of the bay, from the islet at the west end to the river mouth at the east, is in our Weligama beach guide.
OpenStreetMap draws Mirissa Beach as one stretch, 1.2 km from end to end (OpenStreetMap). Love Sri Lanka calls it crescent shaped and lined with tall coconut palms (Love Sri Lanka). Secret Beach, a smaller cove just round the corner from the main beach, is mapped separately (Love Sri Lanka; OpenStreetMap). Our older Mirissa beach guide has more on the town.
No weather record separates them. Neither town has its own station in the WMO’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals, and for both the nearest is Galle: we measured 24 km from Weligama and 28 km from Mirissa. Galle’s record puts 345 mm of rain in October, its wettest month, and 71 mm in February, its driest (WMO climate normals).
What the sources say about the sea
Swimming and snorkelling are both possible, according to the Wikivoyage guide to Weligama (its last edit was in August 2025). It warns that high season puts many surfers in the water, particularly beginners, and that the current can turn strong and unpredictable, so swimmers should take care (Wikivoyage). For Mirissa, Love Sri Lanka’s 2020 page on Parrot Rock says the water there is shallow. It also says not to swim there at high tide or out of season, because the sea can get rough (Love Sri Lanka).
The GOV.UK page for Sri Lanka shows 21 September 2026 as its latest change, and on 16 October it was still marked as current (GOV.UK). Its “Swimming safety” entry says, word for word: “Many beaches in Sri Lanka have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of the year. Get advice from your hotel or tour operator before going in the sea.” Its closing line links a Royal Life Saving Society page for holidaymakers (GOV.UK). We add nothing to that.
Surfing: where beginners and experienced surfers go
The surf map Love Sri Lanka published in 2022 is the clearest source here. It describes Weligama’s breaks as small and predictable over a soft sea bed, with schools along the beach, and a season that often runs from early September to the end of May. The same map says Mirissa suits intermediate surfers. With good timing there’s a right-hander about six feet tall over the reef, and a similar left near the harbour, in a shorter season of November to March (Love Sri Lanka). Wikivoyage agrees on the split. Its Sri Lanka page gives November to April for the south and west coasts and names Weligama as the best place for beginners (Wikivoyage). Its Mirissa page describes two surf points, one for advanced surfers and one for intermediates (Wikivoyage).
If a lesson is the plan, Weligama is the obvious base. Our guide to Weligama surf lessons lists the schools along the bay with the prices on their own pages.
Whale watching and snorkelling
Love Sri Lanka calls Mirissa the country’s premier whale watching destination (Love Sri Lanka). Its whale page gives a season of November to April and says tours leave the dock by 6am. It also warns that a sighting is never certain, in season or out (Love Sri Lanka). One operator, Raja & the Whales, listed a 6.30am departure from Mirissa harbour with check-in at 6am when we read its page on 16 October 2026 (Raja & the Whales). Stay in Mirissa and the harbour is a short walk from the beach. From Weligama it’s a 6 km ride to make a 6am check-in. Our Mirissa whale watching guide has operators’ prices and the rules on how close boats may go.
For snorkelling at Mirissa, Love Sri Lanka points to Parrot Rock, where small rocks off the beach have been overgrown by coral, and names November to April as its season (Love Sri Lanka). It also names Palm Cove, at Secret Beach, as a snorkelling spot (Love Sri Lanka). Snorkelling from Weligama has a post of its own, linked in the table above.

What each town is like
Wikipedia gives tourism and fishing as Weligama’s main industries and says its name means “sandy village” (Wikipedia). Love Sri Lanka describes a small fishing village that grew into a booming tourist spot and a top surfing destination (Love Sri Lanka). The same Wikipedia article describes its stilt fishermen, who perch on a crossbar above chest-deep water, each on a pole of their own, and cast bamboo rods past the surf (Wikipedia).
Mirissa’s entry reads differently. Wikipedia calls it a small town whose beach and nightlife draw tourists, and the largest fishing port on the south coast. Its first tourist accommodation was built in 1980, and visitor numbers rose sharply in the mid-1990s (Wikipedia). Wikivoyage calls it a busy, growing town where you can get almost everywhere on foot. Its undated listing also mentions bars around the beach with long happy hours (Wikivoyage). Our nightlife guide, linked in the table, covers Weligama’s evenings, such as the bars in town and the venues along the coast.

So which should you pick?
These are our suggestions, each resting on the facts above.
- Learning to surf: Weligama, for the reasons the surf map gives.
- A whale trip on more than one morning: Mirissa, for the short walk to the harbour.
- Arriving by train with bags: Weligama, whose station is 400 m from the sand.
- A compact beach town you can walk round: Mirissa, going by Wikivoyage.
- Surfing at intermediate level or above: Mirissa’s reef, or Midigama (below).
At 5 km apart you can also have a bit of both. Our guide on where to stay in Weligama covers the bay’s areas and types of stay if Weligama wins.
Is Weligama worth visiting?
For a surf trip, the sources say yes. Love Sri Lanka rates Weligama as the south coast’s top place to surf, and says beginners and pros will each find a beach to suit them (Love Sri Lanka). It is also a working fishing town, with a rock carving that Wikipedia dates to between the 6th and 9th centuries (Wikipedia).
It may not suit you if you want the water to yourself in high season. Wikivoyage warns that there can be a lot of surfers in the water then, beginners above all (Wikivoyage). The bay’s own breaks cater mainly to novices, says the surf map (Love Sri Lanka). Love Sri Lanka’s beach page from 2020 sends more experienced surfers on to Midigama, which it puts about ten minutes’ drive away (Love Sri Lanka).
Weligama or Ahangama, Hiriketiya or Unawatuna?
People also weigh Weligama against these three towns on the same coast.
Ahangama and Midigama
Midigama is 5 km west of Weligama, usually 10 to 15 minutes in a car (OpenStreetMap). The 2022 surf map rates it for intermediate and expert surfers and says the crowds are smaller (Love Sri Lanka). Ahangama, 9 km away and usually 15 to 20 minutes (OpenStreetMap), is described by Wikivoyage as an emerging surf destination with secluded beaches (Wikivoyage). Both have stations on the Coast Line, 5.2 km and 8.7 km before Weligama (Sri Lanka Railways).
Hiriketiya
Hiriketiya Beach lies near Dikwella, a town Wikipedia places 22 km east of Matara. Wikipedia says the beach is well known to tourists and surfers (Wikipedia). From Weligama it’s 39 km by road, usually 50 to 70 minutes (OpenStreetMap). That’s far enough to make it a separate stay rather than an evening out.
Unawatuna
Unawatuna is 22 km west of Weligama, usually 30 to 45 minutes away (OpenStreetMap). Wikivoyage describes a beach resort 5 km from Galle, full of guest houses, cafes and bars (Wikivoyage). Our Unawatuna beach guide covers it properly. If you’d rather see these places from a single base, our list of day trips from Weligama sorts them by the drive.
Questions about Weligama or Mirissa
Is Weligama close to Mirissa?
Yes. The road distance is 5 km, which we’d allow 10 to 15 minutes for (OpenStreetMap). By rail, Mirissa station is 4.7 km beyond Weligama (Sri Lanka Railways), though it stands about 1.9 km from Mirissa Beach (OpenStreetMap).
Is Weligama in Mirissa?
No. Wikipedia treats them as two separate towns, both in Matara District (Weligama; Mirissa). Their beaches are separate too, about 2 km apart on the map.
Is Weligama or Mirissa better for families?
For children learning to surf, Love Sri Lanka’s 2020 family surfing page sends beginners to Weligama (Love Sri Lanka). Its 2022 page on family beaches says to check whether the sea is safe for swimming at any of them, especially with children (Love Sri Lanka).
Can you do Weligama and Mirissa in one day?
You can, because the drive is short. We’d give the morning to one bay and the afternoon to the other, and save the whale boat for its own early start.
