Two things changed on the routes most of our guests use to reach Sri Lanka. From 2 August 2026, SriLankan Airlines increased Colombo–Melbourne from seven to ten flights a week. And since 6 January 2026, Singapore Airlines has been running ten weekly flights between Colombo and Singapore after adding three daytime services.
Neither is a brand-new route. Both change something that actually matters when you are planning a trip: what time of day you land. If you are comparing flights to Sri Lanka from Australia, or weighing up a Singapore connection instead, the difference is worth a few minutes of your time. We book airport pickups almost every day of the week, so we notice these things quickly.

Colombo to Melbourne: three extra flights a week
The three new frequencies run Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday as UL608, alongside the daily UL604 that was already there.

SriLankan has been open about why. Australia is one of its faster-growing inbound markets, and a lot of that traffic is people visiting family and friends, plus students moving between the two countries. Colombo also works as a connecting point for passengers heading on to India.
The bit that actually changes your first day
Look at the arrival times on the return leg, because this is where the new schedule earns its keep.
The daily UL605 lands in Colombo at 22:25. By the time you clear immigration, collect bags and get to the car, it is close to midnight. Nobody sensibly drives three hours south at that hour on their first night. So the standard advice has always been the same: book a night in Negombo, ten minutes from the airport, and start properly the next morning. It works, but it costs you a night and a hotel.
The new UL609 lands at 12:15. That is a completely different day. You are through the airport by early afternoon, on the Southern Expressway by two, and on the south coast in time for dinner. Weligama and Mirissa are roughly a three-hour drive from Bandaranaike International; Galle is a little under that.
If you are flying Melbourne to Sri Lanka on a Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday, you can now skip the Negombo overnight entirely. Over a two-week trip that is one more day on the coast instead of one more day near an airport.
The trade-off is the 06:00 departure from Melbourne, which means a very early start on the Australian side. Some of our guests happily take that swap. Others would rather sleep and land late. Both are reasonable, and now you get to choose, which was not really the case before.
Colombo to Singapore: ten flights a week
Singapore Airlines added three daytime services between Colombo and Singapore on 6 January 2026, operating Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. That took the route to ten flights a week, flown by A350s and 787-10 Dreamliners.
The word doing the work there is again daytime. Colombo–Singapore has historically been a late-night run in both directions. A daytime option makes the route usable for a short business trip, and it makes Changi a far more comfortable connecting point if you are coming from Australia, East Asia or the west coast of North America and would rather not transit at three in the morning.
For Australian travellers this is worth knowing even if you never intend to stop in Singapore. It is a genuine alternative to the direct SriLankan service, particularly if you are flying out of Perth, Brisbane or Adelaide, where a Singapore connection is often the more sensible routing anyway.
More Australians are already coming
The schedule changes are not happening in isolation. Australia has been climbing Sri Lanka’s source-market table through 2026.
- In June 2026, Australia moved into third place among source markets, with 8,710 arrivals, up 19.3% year on year.
- Average daily arrivals from Australia rose 24.5%, from 294 a day in July 2025 to 366 a day in 2026.
- Sri Lanka welcomed 1,236,695 international visitors between 1 January and 15 July 2026, according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.
India, the UK and China remain the biggest markets overall. But Australia growing at nearly 20% while total arrivals were broadly flat tells you where the momentum is, and it explains why an airline would add capacity to Melbourne rather than somewhere else.
Planning around the new schedule
A few practical notes from our side of the arrivals hall, whichever of the flights to Sri Lanka from Australia you end up on.
Match your first hotel to your flight number, not to your itinerary. If you land on UL605 at 22:25, stay near the airport. If you land on UL609 at 12:15, go straight to wherever you actually want to be. We have seen people book a Negombo night out of habit on a flight that no longer needs one.
Pre-book the transfer for late arrivals. A 22:25 landing is not the moment to negotiate with a taxi. Our airport transfer service tracks the flight, so a delay does not leave you stranded, and the driver is there whatever time you actually clear customs.
Think about the direction of your trip. Landing at midday suits a south-coast-first route: beaches, whales off Mirissa, then inland to the hills. Landing at night suits a cultural-triangle-first route, since Sigiriya and Dambulla are an easier drive from Negombo than from the coast. Book the new frequencies early in peak season. The southern coast season runs roughly November to April, which is also when the Australian school holidays land. Three extra flights a week is meaningful capacity, but it is not unlimited.
Questions we get asked
Are there direct flights to Sri Lanka from Australia?
Yes. SriLankan Airlines flies direct between Colombo and Melbourne, now ten times a week, and between Colombo and Sydney four times a week. There are no direct services from Perth, Brisbane or Adelaide, so those routes connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or the Gulf.
How long is the flight from Melbourne to Colombo?
Around ten and a half hours on the direct service. UL609 leaves Melbourne at 06:00 and reaches Colombo at 12:15 local time.
Which flight is best if I want to reach the south coast on arrival day?
UL609, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Landing at 12:15 gives you enough daylight to drive to Galle, Weligama or Mirissa comfortably. The daily UL605 arrival at 22:25 does not.
Did Sri Lanka get a new airline route to Singapore?
Not a new route, but more of it. Singapore Airlines added three daytime flights from 6 January 2026, taking Colombo–Singapore to ten flights a week. The route itself has been running for years.
How far is Bandaranaike International Airport from the south coast?
