Sri Lanka in August 2027: Weather, Perahera and Where to Go

Sri Lanka in August is hot and mostly dry on the east coast, across the north and in the Cultural Triangle, while the south-west and the higher hills get regular showers. The month sits in the south-west monsoon season, which the Department of Meteorology puts at May to September (Department of Meteorology). Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Pottuvil and Anuradhapura average three or four rain days each in August, against 10 in Colombo and 14 in Galle (WMO climate normals). It’s a strong month for east-coast beaches, Arugam Bay’s surf and the Triangle. In 2026 it was also Perahera month in Kandy (official schedule).

Sri Lanka weather in August: ten stations

These are 30-year averages, 1991 to 2020, from each station’s World Meteorological Organization record (WMO climate normals). A rain day here means a day with 1 mm or more.

All five stations in the north, east and Triangle stay under five wet days, while Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Colombo and Galle sit between 10 and about 14. Inland Ratnapura is the wettest of the 20 Sri Lankan stations in August, with 305 mm on about 19 days (WMO normals for Ratnapura). Sri Lanka Tourism expects heavy rain along the south-west coast and over the hills in this monsoon. It calls the season the time for the dry zone, naming Trincomalee, Jaffna and Arugam Bay (Sri Lanka Tourism’s weather page).

August between July and September

On the south-west coast August is a little drier than July and far drier than September, while the east and the Triangle get slowly wetter across the three months (WMO climate normals):

Is August a good time to visit Sri Lanka?

Most first trips will do well in August, as long as the plan leans east. The east coast, the Triangle and the north all average under five rain days, Arugam Bay is in season, and every source we read includes August in the Minneriya gathering’s months. Kandy is less clear-cut: large crowds gathered for the 2026 Perahera (Ada Derana), and Katugastota averages 11 wet days.

A south-west beach holiday fits August less well. Love Sri Lanka starts Weligama’s surf season in September (Love Sri Lanka) and Mirissa’s whale season in November (Love Sri Lanka). In our view the south coast is worth a few days in August, not a beach fortnight.

The Kandy Esala Perahera and August 2027’s holidays

The Temple of the Tooth’s festival page places its Esala Perahera in July or August, in the month of Esala or Nikini (Sri Dalada Maligawa). For 2026, the temple’s Perahera site listed five Kumbal processions from 18 to 22 August, then Randoli processions from 23 August. The grand Randoli was timed for 6.43pm on Thursday 27 August, and a daytime procession closed the festival on Friday 28 August (official schedule). On the Central Bank’s 2026 list, 27 August was Nikini Full Moon Poya (CBSL 2026 holidays). A year earlier the festival ran from 30 July to 9 August, the dates of a drone suspension the Civil Aviation Authority set for it (Daily Mirror).

In the Central Bank’s 2027 calendar, Esala poya falls on Sunday 18 July and Nikini poya on Monday 16 August (CBSL 2027 holidays). When we looked on 24 October 2026, the Perahera site carried only the 2026 programme, so expect the 2027 dates nearer the time. The same calendar marks Sunday 15 August 2027, Milad-Un-Nabi, as a bank, public and mercantile holiday. Wikivoyage notes that alcohol is neither sold nor drunk in public on poya days (Wikivoyage), and Wikipedia says meat sales are banned too (Wikipedia).

Watching the processions

Wikivoyage’s Kandy page describes ten days that grow in size, with the last five the most intense with processions lasting well over three hours (Wikivoyage). Its undated listing, as we read it on 24 October 2026, puts a Queens Hotel seat at around US$40. Pavement watchers queue from about midday outside that hotel and from 4 or 5pm elsewhere, and standing up during the procession is discouraged. Buy seats from officials, it says, not middlemen. On 17 August 2026, the eve of that year’s festival, police announced a security and traffic plan, with roadblocks and checks on people and vehicles. They asked the public to “cooperate with officers deployed for traffic control and security” (Ada Derana). In 2025 drone flights over the route were suspended, with a warning of legal action (Daily Mirror).

We found no official dress code for watching from the roadside; the rules below are for going inside. The temple’s FAQ, read on 24 October 2026, says: “Visitors wearing shorts, sleeveless, or body-revealing attire are not permitted.” Visitors can get suitable clothes at the entrances, it adds (Sri Dalada Maligawa). In GOV.UK’s travel advice (last updated 21 September 2026), anyone going into a Buddhist temple is told to “cover your legs and shoulders” and leave shoes and hats off. Disrespect towards Buddhist images can lead to arrest, it warns, and it asks visitors not to be photographed with their back to a Buddha statue (GOV.UK).

Jaffna has a festival of its own at the Nallur Kandaswamy temple, which Wikivoyage places in July and August (Wikivoyage). We found no dates for 2027.

The Minneriya elephant gathering in August

As Minneriya’s reservoir drops in the dry months, grass sprouts on the uncovered bed and the herds that roam nearby parks drift in and join up (Sri Lanka Tourism). Four sources give four seasons, and every one covers August:

Love Sri Lanka expects the bigger herds at Minneriya in August and at nearby Kaudulla in September (Love Sri Lanka).

Don’t count on big numbers. According to the Daily FT, the gathering numbered 402 elephants in September 2017 and only 20 four years later (Daily FT). The Wildlife Department’s 2026 magazine, quoting a former director general, blames releases from the Moragahakanda project since 2019, which fill the tank early (DWC). In November 2025 the Daily FT also reported a court undertaking by the water authorities to bring back the tanks’ natural rise and fall. Where to go in Sri Lanka in August

Trincomalee and Pigeon Island

Wikivoyage counts April to September as Trincomalee’s dry season, with the year’s clearest water for divers and snorkellers, and calls it peak whale-watching time (Wikivoyage). Love Sri Lanka’s whale page gives Pigeon Island March to April and August to September, saying a snorkeller there might meet a turtle “or even a whale” (Love Sri Lanka). Neither promises you’ll see one. Love Sri Lanka’s page on the national park rates May to September for snorkelling there (Love Sri Lanka).

Pasikudah

Love Sri Lanka says Pasikudah’s shallow reef runs along one of the longest such coastlines anywhere, and that you can walk out into the sea from the beach (Love Sri Lanka). Wikivoyage’s Batticaloa page lists swimming at Pasikudah and calls its water calm (Wikivoyage).

Arugam Bay

Wikivoyage gives Arugam Bay an April to October surf season, with July and August bringing the best waves and the biggest crowds (Wikivoyage). Love Sri Lanka’s surf map allows only July to the end of September and lists Whisky Point and Pottuvil Point as the hardest breaks (Love Sri Lanka). The Cultural Triangle

The Central Cultural Fund’s ticket site gives Sigiriya, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa identical hours, opening at 7am and shutting at 5pm (Central Cultural Fund). Its price page, revised on 14 October 2026, charges USD 35 for Sigiriya, and the same USD 30 at Anuradhapura as at Polonnaruwa (Central Cultural Fund). With Anuradhapura’s August highs near 34°C, we’d start at opening time and rest through midday.

The hills and Ella

Nuwara Eliya averages almost 14 wet days, while Bandarawela, about 8 km from Ella, averages 8 and Badulla 6.4 (WMO climate normals). Bandarawela’s driest month of the whole year is August, so we’d base ourselves on the Ella side.

The south and west coasts

Expect showers on 10 to 14 days in Colombo and Galle, and treat the sea with care. GOV.UK’s Sri Lanka advice carries the date 21 September 2026 and was marked still current when we read it on 24 October 2026 (GOV.UK). Under “Swimming safety” (FCDO), beside a link to the Royal Life Saving Society, its own words run: “Many beaches in Sri Lanka have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of the year. Get advice from your hotel or tour operator before going in the sea.” This covers Sri Lanka’s beaches in general, the east coast’s included.

Yala and the trains: check before you book

Ada Derana reported a month-long closure of Blocks 1 and 2 at Yala, starting on 14 September 2026, as water sources in the park dried up (Ada Derana). The same report says the park usually gets most visitors from August to March. On 13 October the paper said both blocks were due back on 16 October (Ada Derana). Newswire quoted the wildlife department opening bungalow and campsite reservations from 1 November (Newswire). We looked again on 24 October 2026 and could find no Sri Lankan news report that the gates had reopened, so ask before you pay for a jeep.

Wikivoyage puts the rail damage from Cyclone Ditwah at 70% of the network (Wikivoyage). From 2 October 2026 Colombo trains were to stop at Peradeniya, short of Kandy, as repairs to a bridge over the Mahaweli dragged on (Sunday Times). The Colombo Times said in early October that crews were still at work on two gaps: the Gampola to Nawalapitiya section and the stretch from Hatton to Nanu Oya (Colombo Times). The Nanu Oya to Badulla stretch past Ella reopened on 20 June 2026 (Sunday Times). For August 2027, note what Sri Lanka Railways’ chief engineer said in May 2026: he hoped to have the line open as far as Badulla again by mid-2027 (News 1st). How busy is Sri Lanka in August?

Fairly busy. The tourism authority, SLTDA, counted 198,235 arrivals in August 2025, beating every month from April to June and both September and October (SLTDA). August 2026 reached 191,704, down 3.3%, with India, the UK, China, Germany and France as key markets (SLTDA; SLTDA August 2026 report).

An August route by road: Kandy, Sigiriya and the east coast

This nine-night loop starts in Kandy, for the Perahera if your dates match, then crosses the dry zone to the coast. The times are OpenStreetMap router figures, rounded up because the router assumes empty roads.

In total that’s about 670 km and 15 to 19 hours at the wheel over five legs. From Sigiriya, Minneriya’s gate takes 30 to 40 minutes (OpenStreetMap). Surfers can trade Pasikudah for Arugam Bay, a further 146 km and usually 3.5 to 4 hours south (OpenStreetMap), then allow 6 to 7 hours for the airport (OpenStreetMap). Is August a good time to visit Sri Lanka?

August works well for a trip built around the east coast, the Triangle and Kandy. For a beach week in the south-west it is weaker: Galle sees rain on 14 days in an average August (WMO normals for Galle).

When is the Kandy Perahera in 2027?

The dates had not been published on 24 October 2026. The temple ties the festival to Esala or Nikini (Sri Dalada Maligawa), whose full moons fall on 18 July and 16 August 2027 by the Central Bank’s list (CBSL 2027 holidays). The 2026 festival lasted from 18 to 28 August.

What is a good Sri Lanka itinerary in August?

One that follows the dry weather east: Kandy, Sigiriya for the rock and Minneriya, then Trincomalee and Pasikudah, about 670 km of driving in nine nights by the route table above. Surfers can end at Arugam Bay instead.
