Day trips from Weligama sort themselves by the drive. Six are within an hour each way: Mirissa’s whale boats, Koggala, Matara, Unawatuna, Dondra Head and Galle Fort. Six more take one to two and a half hours: Mulkirigala, Hikkaduwa, the Madu River, Rekawa, Sinharaja and Udawalawe. Yala and Ella are long days, with Ella 174 km away and usually 3.5 to 4.5 hours each way (route). We ran every leg through the OpenStreetMap route planner on 6 October 2026 and rounded each time up. Oura Travel is based in Weligama and plans private road journeys with a car and a driver-guide.
Key takeaways
- Six trips are within an hour each way, and Galle Fort is the furthest of them at 28 km.
- Udawalawe is the nearer safari: 110 km, usually 2 to 2.5 hours. Yala’s Palatupana gate is 139 km.
- Ella means 7 to 9 hours of driving there and back, so we’d give it a night.
- Blocks 1 and 2 of Yala were shut for a month from 14 September 2026, until 15 October. Ask which blocks are open.

Within an hour of Weligama
What’s on the bay itself is covered on our things to do in Weligama page.
Mirissa and the whale boats
Mirissa’s fishing harbour, where the whale boats leave from, is 6 km east. The season runs from November to April, and Love Sri Lanka warns that a sighting can’t be guaranteed even then (Love Sri Lanka). One operator’s website, read on 6 October 2026, has its boat leaving at 6.30am and staying out four to five hours on average (Raja & the Whales). Our Mirissa whale watching guide compares prices and sighting figures.
Koggala: the folk museum and the stilt fishermen
Koggala is known for stilt fishing: a man perches on a single pole planted just offshore (Wikipedia).
The childhood home of the writer Martin Wickramasinghe is now part of a folk museum. Its website lists 9am to 5pm daily, except two days at the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April. On 6 October 2026 it showed Rs 1,000 for a non-resident adult and Rs 400 for a non-resident child (Martin Wickramasinghe Trust).
Matara and Dondra Head, the island’s southern tip
Matara has two colonial-era forts (Love Sri Lanka). One is the Star Fort of 1765, which still has its moat and a museum (Love Sri Lanka).
Dondra Head is Sri Lanka’s southernmost point. Its lighthouse, finished in March 1890, is the island’s tallest at 49 m (Wikipedia). Love Sri Lanka says the 196 steps to the top need special permission (Love Sri Lanka).
Unawatuna
Unawatuna is 22 km west, on the road to Galle. On Rumassala hill there, Love Sri Lanka says, a Japanese Peace Pagoda has views of the sea and Galle Fort (Love Sri Lanka).
Weligama to Galle Fort
The fort’s main gate is 28 km from Weligama, usually 45 minutes to an hour by road. UNESCO says the Portuguese founded Galle in the 16th century and that it reached its height in the 18th, under the Dutch (UNESCO).
Wikivoyage’s listing, dated October 2021, says there’s no charge to walk round the fort (Wikivoyage). A full ticket for the Central Cultural Fund’s museum inside it (Central Cultural Fund) was USD 6 on the fund’s price list, last revised on 24 September 2026 (price list).

One to two and a half hours each way
Mulkirigala rock temple
Mulkirigala is a Buddhist temple on a rock 205 m high, with seven shrines in five compounds (Wikipedia). Love Sri Lanka says you climb to the summit for the stupa and the view, ideally in the early morning or evening. It asks visitors to cover shoulders and knees and leave footwear at the entrance (Love Sri Lanka). We found no official ticket price on 6 October 2026.
Hikkaduwa
Hikkaduwa’s reef is one of Sri Lanka’s three marine national parks (Love Sri Lanka). Wikivoyage’s listing, marked as updated in 2026, calls the coral badly damaged but recovering. It says touching it is forbidden and that fines have been strictly enforced since 2025 (Wikivoyage).
The Madu River and a turtle hatchery
The Madu River widens into a lake at Balapitiya (Wikipedia), 69 km from Weligama. Ramsar lists a mangrove lagoon with 15 islands in a wetland of 915 hectares (Ramsar Sites Information Service).
Our Galle day tour page sets out a full day: collection from your hotel in the morning, the river by boat with fish therapy, a turtle hatchery on the way and Galle Fort. The page has the current price.
Rekawa turtle watch: an evening, not a day
The Turtle Watch’s website says it runs every night of the year from 8.30pm, with no booking needed at present. On 6 October 2026 its ticket was LKR 2,000 for a foreign adult and LKR 1,000 for a child. It expects about 5 to 15 turtles a night from April to July and 1 or 2 from October to January (Rekawa Turtle Watch).
In the quiet months the guide usually ends an empty watch at 11.30pm, so the drive back starts close to midnight. We’d sleep in Tangalle, about 8 km away (Rekawa Turtle Watch).
Sinharaja Forest Reserve
UNESCO lists Sinharaja as Sri Lanka’s last viable area of primary tropical rainforest, where 19 of the island’s 20 endemic bird species live (UNESCO). You see it on foot. Wikivoyage, on a page last edited in August 2026, says leeches are everywhere and that you need a passport or ID card for the entry permit (Wikivoyage). Wikipedia says every visitor goes in with a guide, and lists a south-eastern entrance at Deniyaya and Mederipitiya (Wikipedia).
That’s the side to use from Weligama: the route planner reaches a gate on the Mederipitiya road after 77 km. Kudawa, which Wikivoyage calls the main entrance, is 142 km away (route). The Forest Department’s website wouldn’t load on 6 October 2026, so we print no ticket price.
Weligama to Udawalawe: the park and the Transit Home
The gate of Udawalawe National Park is 110 km from Weligama, usually 2 to 2.5 hours by road. Love Sri Lanka says herds of elephants are commonly seen there at any time of year, best in the early morning and late evening (Love Sri Lanka). Wikivoyage’s page, last edited in December 2025, has safaris from Udawalawe town usually leaving at about 5.30am (Wikivoyage). To be at the gate by then you’d leave Weligama 2 to 2.5 hours earlier, between 3am and 3.30am.
Our Safari Excursion page offers Udawalawe or Yala, with an early-morning pick-up from your hotel. Its listed price covers a private jeep and its driver, and transport from where you’re staying costs extra.
The Elephant Transit Home, 102 km from Weligama (route), raises orphaned calves and releases them when they are 6 to 8 years old, mostly into the neighbouring park (Conservation Physiology). Our elephant orphanage guide explains why its feeding times are unofficial.
The long days: Yala and Ella
Yala: 139 km to the Palatupana gate
Yala’s Palatupana gate is 139 km from Weligama, usually 2.5 to 3.5 hours each way, so 5 to 7 hours of the day is driving. Wikivoyage, on a page last edited in February 2026, has most jeep tours leaving Tissamaharama at 5am or 2.30pm (Wikivoyage). Tissamaharama is 122 km from Weligama (route), and we allow 2 to 3 hours, half an hour less than to the gate. Take that off 5am and you leave the bay between 2am and 3am, in the dark; GOV.UK’s road advice is below.
Blocks 1 and 2 were closed to visitors from 14 September 2026 because of dry weather, for one month, until 15 October (Ada Derana). The Daily Mirror reported the decision as leaving Blocks 3 to 6 open (Daily Mirror). Love Sri Lanka has the Palatupana gate leading to Blocks 1 and 2 (Love Sri Lanka), so our 139 km is to a gate for those two blocks. We found no later report on 6 October 2026. Whenever you go, ask which blocks are open and which gate your jeep will use.
Weligama to Ella day trip: 174 km and a long day
Ella is 174 km from Weligama on the planner’s route back and 177 km going out, usually 3.5 to 4.5 hours each way (route). That’s 7 to 9 hours on the road. Leave at 5am, return at 8pm, and a 15-hour day leaves 6 to 8 hours for every stop, every meal and Ella itself. We’d give it a night.
Our Ella day excursion page describes the one-day version: a morning pick-up from your hotel and a drive to Ella. Its stops include Ravana Falls, Buduruwagala temple, the Nine Arch Bridge, a tea plantation and Little Adam’s Peak, and it lists a train ride. The page gives the current price but no timings, so ask us.
The Colombo Times of 2 October 2026 reported trains running as normal between Nanu Oya and Badulla (Colombo Times), the stretch through Ella (Wikivoyage), so check first; our Kandy to Ella train guide explains the gaps.

Which trip in which month
Galle has the nearest weather station with 30-year averages. January, February and March each bring under 100 mm of rain there, while May, September, October and November each bring more than 250 mm (WMO climate normals).
The whale season runs from November to April (Love Sri Lanka). Rekawa expects most turtles from April to July (Rekawa Turtle Watch). Love Sri Lanka gives February to July as the ideal months for Yala (Love Sri Lanka). For Sinharaja, Wikivoyage suggests December to early April, or August and September (Wikivoyage).
Minneriya’s elephant gathering, at its best in August and September (Love Sri Lanka), isn’t a day trip from here. The park gate is 307 km away, usually 5.5 to 7 hours each way (route).
GOV.UK’s update of 21 September 2026 says heavy inter-monsoon rain has made floods and landslides more likely island-wide, and that transport and other services may be hit. It says to check with your travel provider and follow local authorities’ advice (GOV.UK).
How to do them: car, train and bus
For inland trips such as Sinharaja and Udawalawe we’d use a car with a driver. Weligama is also on the Coast Line. On Sri Lanka Railways’ station list Mirissa is 5 km down the line and Matara 14 km. In the other direction Koggala is 14 km, Unawatuna 23 km, Galle 29 km and Hikkaduwa 48 km (Sri Lanka Railways). We give no times: on 6 October 2026 the railway’s schedule page showed only a notice about a new schedule site (Sri Lanka Railways).
Buses along the coast road pass at least every 20 minutes, day and night, by Wikivoyage’s Weligama page, last edited in August 2025 (Wikivoyage).
GOV.UK’s safety page, as updated on 21 September 2026, has advice on all three (GOV.UK).
- Buses. Public buses often go fast and rarely yield, it says, and are often poorly maintained, which has meant serious crashes in recent years. It rates tourist buses as usually more professionally and safely driven, with standards that vary.
- Trains. It says to stay within the carriage of a moving train, because visitors have died hanging out of open doorways and windows. It also says to look after your belongings at all times, citing theft and pickpocketing.
- Roads. It warns that some roads, particularly in remoter areas, may be in poor condition, that driving is erratic and that accidents are frequent, particularly at night. On busy roads it says to stay alert for people on foot and for animals, and it says riding a motorbike can be especially dangerous.
Two sea excursions from Weligama on our pages
Our Snorkling Excursion page describes a morning start from your hotel for snorkelling at Mirissa, then Coconut Tree Hill and the Koggala stilt fishermen. The page has the current price. Our Fishing Excursion page gives a 5.00am departure from the hotel and names Bentota, 89 km away and usually 1.5 to 2 hours by road (route). That’s not one of the 14 places above, so ask us where the boat leaves from.

Before any trip into the water, read GOV.UK’s “Swimming safety” advice, on the page it updated on 21 September 2026. In full: “Many beaches in Sri Lanka have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of the year. Get advice from your hotel or tour operator before going in the sea.” After that it points to the Royal Life Saving Society for water safety on holiday (GOV.UK). Our Weligama beach guide has a section on swimming and a month-by-month weather table.
Questions about day trips from Weligama
How far is Galle from Weligama, and can you go without a car?
Galle Fort is 28 km by road, usually 45 minutes to an hour (route). Galle station is 29 km up the Coast Line (Sri Lanka Railways), and Wikivoyage’s page has at least three buses an hour on the coast road (Wikivoyage).
Is a safari from Weligama possible in one day?
Yes for Udawalawe, if you start early: the park gate is 110 km from the bay (route). Yala’s Palatupana gate is 139 km (route), which makes 5 to 7 hours of driving. Two of Yala’s blocks were closed for a month from 14 September 2026 (Ada Derana), so ask which are open.
Is Ella a realistic day trip from Weligama?
It can be done, but 7 to 9 of the hours are driving, because Ella is 174 km away (route). A 5am start and an 8pm return leave 6 to 8 hours for everything else. We’d stay a night.
Day trips from Weligama with a car and driver
Our private car page says a driver needs about ten hours off between driving days. Contact us through that page with your dates and the trips you fancy, and we’ll work out which fits which day.
Road distances and drive times here came from the OpenStreetMap route planner on 6 October 2026, the day we read each linked source. Closures, prices, seasons and trains all move, so confirm them the week you go.
