Sri Lanka in October is in the second inter-monsoon, the season the Department of Meteorology dates to October and November (Department of Meteorology). October is the wettest month of the year in Colombo, Galle, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya. Hambantota and Pottuvil, in the south-east, average 9 or 10 rain days, against about 18 in Galle (WMO climate normals). So plan October around early starts and a spare day or two, and give the south-east more nights. We’re based in Weligama and plan private routes from there.

Sri Lanka weather in October
The Department of Meteorology’s other three seasons are the first inter-monsoon (March and April), a south-west monsoon from May until September, and a north-east monsoon over December, January and February (Department of Meteorology). Convective showers are frequent in both inter-monsoons. In the second, depressions from the Bay of Bengal can also bring heavy rain in a short time (Department of Meteorology).

Every station in the table gets more rain, and more rain days, in October than in September (WMO climate normals).
October against September and November
The jump from September is biggest in the dry zone, where Anuradhapura’s rain almost quadruples. In November, Galle, Colombo, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya ease off, while Trincomalee rises to 376 mm and Pottuvil more than doubles to 308 mm (WMO climate normals). That makes Sri Lanka in September drier all round, while Sri Lanka in November is a little kinder to the south-west but wetter in the east and north.
Where Sri Lanka works in October
The south coast: surf season meets peak rain
Love Sri Lanka rates Weligama the south coast’s best surf spot for every level (Love Sri Lanka). On its surf map, Weligama’s small, gentle breaks run from the start of September to the end of May, with surf schools along the beach. Midigama’s season runs from October to the end of April and Mirissa’s from November to March (Love Sri Lanka).
The catch is the rain: October is the wettest month at Galle, the nearest station in our table (WMO climate normals). Wikivoyage warns that Weligama’s current can be strong and unpredictable (Wikivoyage), and Sri Lanka Tourism says seas can be rough in October and November (Sri Lanka Tourism). Mirissa’s whale-watching season doesn’t start until November (Love Sri Lanka). In October we’d treat days on Weligama beach as a bonus rather than the point of the trip.
Arugam Bay: the end of the season
Wikivoyage gives Arugam Bay’s surf season as April to October. July and August are the busy months, but October usually still has some good waves and far fewer people, and most hotels and restaurants close from November to March (Wikivoyage). Love Sri Lanka’s surf map is less generous and ends the season in September. It rates Whisky Point and Pottuvil Point as the most challenging of Arugam Bay’s surf breaks (Love Sri Lanka). For late October, check your guesthouse is still open before you book.
The Cultural Triangle
Anuradhapura is much wetter than in September, but its 14 or so rain days are fewer than the south-west coast’s, and highs average 32.5°C (WMO climate normals). The ticket counters at Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura opened from 7am to 5pm daily when we looked on 29 September 2026 (Central Cultural Fund). Climb early, and keep afternoons loose in case of rain.
Early in the month, Minneriya is worth an afternoon: Love Sri Lanka puts the elephant gathering in the July to October dry season, peaking in August and September (Love Sri Lanka).
The hill country
Nuwara Eliya, and Bandarawela near Ella, both get their heaviest rain of the year in October, with rain on about 19 and 22 days respectively (WMO climate normals). Wikivoyage notes that heavy rain can turn dirt trails to mud and bring leeches out on footpaths and in tea estates (Wikivoyage). Walk in the morning and pack shoes with grip.
White-water rafting at Kitulgala
Love Sri Lanka counts Kitulgala, widely known for white-water rafting in Sri Lanka, among the island’s wettest places. It gives May to December as the best months to raft, to avoid heavy rain, and warns that enough rain can make the Kelani River too dangerous (Love Sri Lanka). Leave a spare morning in case the river is too high.
Safaris in October
Drought shut Yala National Park‘s Blocks 1 and 2 to visitors on 14 September 2026, with the closure set to last a month, until 15 October 2026 (Ada Derana). The Wildlife Department kept Blocks 3, 4, 5 and 6 open, and a senior official said it could consider closing more parks if temperatures kept rising (Daily Mirror). Confirm the reopening with the Department of Wildlife Conservation before booking a late-October 2026 drive, and check again for October 2027.
Our Safari Excursion is a private jeep and driver in Yala or Udawalawe, with an early-morning pickup from your hotel. Its page suggests Udawalawe for elephants and Yala for leopards. About 250 elephants are believed to live in Udawalawe permanently (Wikipedia).
Holidays, dry days and Deepavali
The Excise Department’s 2026 list has two dry days in October: World Temperance Day on Saturday 3 October and Vap Poya on Sunday 25 October. On both, alcohol can’t be sold anywhere on the island (Daily Mirror). Vap Poya is a public and bank holiday (Central Bank of Sri Lanka). Drinking in public is banned on poya days as well (Wikivoyage), and shops and businesses generally close (Wikipedia).
In 2027, Vap Poya falls on Friday 15 October (Central Bank of Sri Lanka). For that year’s dry days, check the Excise Department’s 2027 list. Deepavali, a bank and public holiday, falls on Thursday 28 October in 2027 (Central Bank of Sri Lanka), but on Sunday 8 November in 2026 (Central Bank of Sri Lanka).
Trains to Kandy and the hills in October 2026
Cyclone Ditwah damaged about 70% of Sri Lanka’s railway in November and December 2025 (Wikivoyage). Trains on the line between Nanu Oya and Badulla, which passes through Ella, started running again on 20 June 2026 (Onlanka; Newsfirst). The Nine Arches Bridge is between Ella and Demodara stations (Wikipedia). When Newsfirst reported on 6 September 2026, the Rambukkana to Nanu Oya section hadn’t reopened, and repairs to the Kalu Bridge between Peradeniya and Kandy were still going on (Newsfirst).
On 28 September, the railway department announced that regular services would resume on 2 October 2026 on two routes: Colombo Fort to Peradeniya, and Peradeniya to Gampola (Ada Derana; Newswire). Neither announcement mentioned Kandy station or the line beyond Gampola into the hills. In October 2026, go from Kandy to the hills by road, and join the train at Nanu Oya if you want to ride the reopened stretch to Ella. Check Sri Lanka Railways before you book, and again for October 2027.

The route starts in the Cultural Triangle, crosses the hills by road, and gives the south-east, the least rainy corner, three nights before the south coast. OpenStreetMap’s road times assume no traffic, so we’ve rounded them up, and by more on the winding hill roads.

If your Yala morning would fall on or before 15 October 2026, or the closure is extended, sleep near Udawalawe instead. It’s usually 3.5 to 4.5 hours from Arugam Bay (OpenStreetMap) and 2 to 2.5 hours on to Weligama (OpenStreetMap). To add rafting, spend a night at Kitulgala between Kandy and Ella: usually 1.5 to 2 hours from Kandy (OpenStreetMap) and 3.5 to 4.5 hours on to Ella (OpenStreetMap).

October suits a flexible traveller who doesn’t mind rain. It’s the wettest month of the year in Colombo, Galle, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, while the south-east gets rain on only 9 or 10 days (WMO climate normals). Fewer people arrive than in December: the tourism authority counted 165,193 arrivals in October 2025, against 258,928 in December 2025 (SLTDA).
