About this trip

About this route

Eleven days that start on the west coast, run through both ancient capitals, climb to the tea country at Hatton, drop through Ella to the jungle at Yala and finish on the beach at Bentota. It covers more of the island’s history than most routes of this length.

Anuradhapura is the difference. Most eleven day itineraries skip it because it is far north and takes a day of its own. This one gives it that day, which is why Mihintale and Sigiriya both fit as well.

The trip is private throughout, with your own vehicle and driver-guide for all eleven days.

Why this route works

  • Both ancient capitals, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, not just the easier one.
  • Two nights in a planter’s bungalow at Hatton, with the tea estate walk from the door.
  • Sigiriya and Pidurangala on the same day, so you get the climb and the photograph of it.
  • Yala and then the coast, which is the usual order for a reason. The safari days are early and the beach days are not.

Who it suits

  • First visits where history matters as much as the beach.
  • Couples and families who want the hill country properly rather than as one train ride.
  • Anyone who would rather end a trip lying down than sightseeing.

Who it does not suit

  • If ruins are not your thing, days two to four are a lot of them, and we can trade them for the coast.
  • If you want the east coast, this route stays west and south.

Included activities

  • Negombo fishing village and fish market
  • Anuradhapura ancient city and Mihintale
  • Sigiriya rock fortress and Pidurangala
  • Polonnaruwa ancient city
  • Matale spice garden
  • Tea estate walk, factory visit and tasting
  • Ravana falls and Diyaluma falls
  • Yala National Park safari
  • Stilt fishermen and the Hummanaya blowhole
  • Galle Fort walking tour
  • Turtle hatchery

Best time to go

The west and south coasts at either end of this route are at their best from roughly November to April. The Cultural Triangle is drier from May to September but works all year. Hatton and the hill country are cool and often wet whatever the month, so pack a layer for the two nights up there.

How booking works

Send your dates through the enquiry form on this page, or message us on WhatsApp. You get back a day by day plan with the hotels named and a price for your group. Nothing is held or charged while you think about it.

To confirm, we ask for a deposit of 50 percent of the total, with the balance due at least five days before you arrive. Bookings made within ten days of arrival are paid in full at the time of booking. Card payments are handled by PayHere, and a booking is confirmed only once we send you written confirmation.

Prices shown here are per person in US dollars, based on the level 1 hotels. A higher hotel level, extra nights or changes to the route all change the price, so ask us for a quote on your own dates. Cancellation terms are set out in our refund policy.

Day by day

A plan, not a timetable. Any day can be swapped once you are here.

Day 1 Enjoy a city tour of Negombo

Your driver-guide meets you at the airport and drives you the twenty minutes to Negombo. Nothing else is planned for the day.

If you want to move, Negombo has the Dutch canal, the fort gate and a long beach. Most people land tired and sit down.

Day 2 Negombo Town , Scenic Journey

Start early at the lellama, the beach market where the night boats land their catch. Then breakfast, and the drive north into the dry zone.

You stop for lunch on the road and reach Anuradhapura in the afternoon, staying out among the paddy and the tanks rather than in town.

Day 3 Anuradhapura Ancient City , Mihintale

Anuradhapura was the capital for more than a thousand years and the site is enormous, which is why it gets a full day. You walk the main group with your guide: the Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the tree the Buddha sat under, and the great brick stupas including Ruwanwelisaya.

Mihintale in the afternoon is where Buddhism arrived on the island in the third century BC. It is 1,840 steps to the summit and the view over the plain is the reward.

Day 4 Sigiriya , Pidurangala , Polonnaruwa

Sigiriya in the morning. The climb passes the frescoes cut into the rock face and the lion paws at the terrace, and the top is a fifth century citadel with the whole plain laid out below.

Pidurangala stands opposite and is the other way round: a rough scramble at the end, and the best place to see Sigiriya whole. In the afternoon you cross to Polonnaruwa, the capital from the eleventh to the thirteenth century, and walk the ruins.

Day 5 Matale Spice Gardens , Hatton

A long drive today, broken at Matale for a spice garden, where the cinnamon, pepper, cardamom and the rest are grown and processed in front of you.

The road then climbs steadily to Hatton, deep in the tea country, where you stay two nights in a planter's bungalow above Castlereigh lake. The afternoon is for the fire and the view.

Day 6 Tea Experience Tour

A tea day. You walk the estate with someone who works it, watch the pluckers take two leaves and a bud, and follow the leaf into the factory to see it withered, rolled, oxidised and fired.

The tasting at the end is the part that makes sense of the rest. The afternoon is free, and at this altitude that usually means a walk and an early fire.

Day 7 Ravana Falls , Diyaluma Falls

You drive across to Ella, stopping at Ravana falls and the Nine Arch Bridge at Demodara, a stone viaduct still in daily use.

Diyaluma comes next, a main drop of about 220 metres and the second highest in the country. Then the road falls away into the dry scrub around Yala, which after two days in the hills feels like another country.

Day 8 Yala National Park - two trails

Safari day. Yala is scrub, open plain and lagoon and holds one of the highest leopard densities recorded anywhere, though nothing is guaranteed on any single drive. Elephant, sloth bear, sambar, crocodile and a long bird list are all regular.

Bundala is the alternative, a chain of lagoons and dunes that is quieter and far better for birds, with flamingo in season. Your tracker will say which is worth the time that week.

Day 9 Hummanaya Blowhole , Galle Fort Tour

You head west along the coast, stopping at the Hummanaya blowhole, where the swell pushes up through a gap in the rock.

Galle is the main stop. The fort is a lived-in Dutch walled town on Portuguese foundations, with ramparts, churches, warehouses, cafes and shops in the same few streets. After lunch you carry on to Bentota for the last two nights.

Day 10 Relaxing day on the Beach , Lunuganga Visit

Nothing scheduled. Bentota has a wide beach and a quiet end, and the water sports are on the lagoon if you want them.

Lunuganga is fifteen minutes away, the garden Geoffrey Bawa spent fifty years making, and it does a good lunch on the terrace. The turtle hatchery up the coast is the other easy half hour.

Day 11 flight home

Your driver-guide takes you to the airport. From Bentota it is about two hours on the expressway, and we leave enough margin for the queues.
