About this trip

About this route

Thirteen days and a full circle of the island, including the east coast, which most two week routes leave out. You go down the west coast to Galle, along the south to Yala, up into the hills at Ella, across to Kandy by train, out to the beaches at Pasikuda, then back through the Cultural Triangle.

It is the most complete route we sell. It is also the one with the most driving, which is the trade you make for seeing both coasts, two national parks and both ancient capitals in one trip.

The whole thing is private, with your own vehicle and driver-guide for all thirteen days, so the beach days can stretch and the driving days can be cut if you want them to.

Why this route works

  • Pasikuda on the east coast, which is flat, shallow and almost empty compared with the south.
  • Two parks with different habitats. Yala for leopard and elephant, Bundala for water birds.
  • The Ella to Kandy leg of the train, which is the best section of the line rather than the busiest.
  • Sigiriya and Pidurangala on the same afternoon, so you can climb one and photograph it from the other.

Who it suits

  • Anyone with a full two weeks who wants the whole island rather than one corner of it.
  • Second visits, because the east coast section is what most people miss the first time.
  • Travellers happy to move every day or two and treat the drives as part of the trip.

Who it does not suit

  • If you have ten days rather than thirteen, this is too much road. We would cut the east coast and say so.
  • If you want to unpack once, look at a hill country or south coast route instead.

Included activities

  • Negombo town and fish market
  • Galle Fort and the market
  • Stilt fishermen on the south coast
  • Turtle hatchery
  • White tea estate visit
  • Hummanaya blowhole
  • Yala National Park and Bundala National Park
  • Buduruwagala rock carvings and Diyaluma waterfall
  • Ravana falls, Little Adam’s Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge
  • Train from Ella to Kandy
  • Cooking demonstration, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and a cultural show
  • Batticaloa lagoon and lighthouse
  • Sigiriya, Pidurangala and the ruins at Polonnaruwa

Best time to go

This route crosses both coasts, so no month is right for all of it. From May to September the east at Pasikuda is at its best while the south can be wet. From November to April the south and west are dry and the east is not. Tell us your dates and we weight the route towards whichever coast is in season, and shorten the other.

How booking works

Send your dates through the enquiry form on this page, or message us on WhatsApp. You get back a day by day plan with the hotels named and a price for your group. Nothing is held or charged while you think about it.

To confirm, we ask for a deposit of 50 percent of the total, with the balance due at least five days before you arrive. Bookings made within ten days of arrival are paid in full at the time of booking. Card payments are handled by PayHere, and a booking is confirmed only once we send you written confirmation.

Prices shown here are per person in US dollars, based on the level 1 hotels. A higher hotel level, extra nights or changes to the route all change the price, so ask us for a quote on your own dates. Cancellation terms are set out in our refund policy.

Day by day

A plan, not a timetable. Any day can be swapped once you are here.

Day 1 Enjoy a city tour of Negombo

Your driver-guide meets you at the airport and drives you to Negombo, which is twenty minutes away. That is deliberate. After a long flight almost nobody wants four more hours in a car.

If you have energy left, Negombo has the Dutch canal, the old fort gate and a long beach. If you do not, the beach is still there in the morning.

Day 2 Galle Fort , Explore Galle town

Go down to the lellama at first light, the beach market where the night boats land. It is loud, wet and worth the early alarm.

After breakfast you drive south to Galle. The fort is a walled town the Dutch built on Portuguese foundations and it is still lived in, so the ramparts, the churches, the warehouses and the cafes all share the same few streets.

Day 3 Stilt fishermen , Turtles , White tea , Hummanaya

You follow the coast east towards Yala. Watch for the stilt fishermen on the way, who sit on poles set in the shallows, and stop at a tea estate that makes white tea, the grade that is picked by hand and never rolled.

There is a turtle hatchery further on, and the Hummanaya blowhole, where the swell forces water up through a gap in the rock. Wild elephants sometimes stand at the roadside on the last stretch. You reach camp at Yala in time for dinner by the fire.

Day 4 Yala National Park , Bundala National Park

A full day at the parks. Yala is scrub, open plain and lagoon, and it holds one of the highest leopard densities recorded anywhere, along with elephant, sloth bear, sambar and crocodile. No park guarantees a sighting on a single drive.

Bundala is the alternative for the second run, a maze of lagoons and dunes with thousands of water birds, including flamingo in season. Your tracker will tell you which one is worth your morning.

Day 5 Buduruwagala , Diyaluma waterfall

You turn inland and climb. Buduruwagala comes first, seven figures carved into a rock face a thousand years ago, the tallest over fifteen metres and still marked by the paint from its robe.

The road keeps rising to Diyaluma, which drops about 220 metres in a single main fall and is the second highest in the country. You stay near Ella, within sight of the Ravana falls.

Day 6 Little Adam’s Peak , Nine Arch Bridge

A day on the Ella trails. The Nine Arch Bridge at Demodara is a stone viaduct built without steel and trains still cross it. Ravana falls is a short stop on the road.

Ella Gap gives you the view south through the mountains, and Little Adam's Peak is the climb everyone does, a steady hour up for the best view of the bridge and the valley. Late afternoon is the hour to do it.

Day 7 Ella to Kandy scenic train ride

The train from Ella to Kandy is the best section of the upcountry line, and quieter than the Nuwara Eliya leg. It runs through tea, forest and villages, and round passes with the valleys open below.

It is a working service, so it is rarely on time and rarely empty. You reach Kandy in the afternoon and the rest of the day is a rest.

Day 8 Temple of the tooth , Cultural show

The morning starts with a cooking demonstration on clay pots over a wood fire, and you eat what you make.

Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic holds the country's most important Buddhist relic and your visit is timed around the puja. Afterwards there is the forest reserve above the town, the market, and the view from Upper Lake Drive. The evening is the dance and drumming show.

Day 9 Batticaloa lagoon & lighthouse

You leave the hills for the east coast. Batticaloa is the stop on the way. The old fort now holds government offices and is crumbling in places, and the 1913 lighthouse stands at the end of a sandbar between the lagoon and the sea.

Pasikuda is another hour on. The bay is shallow and flat for a long way out, which makes it the easiest swimming on the island.

Day 10 Relaxing day on the beach

A day with nothing in it. Pasikuda is a long curve of white sand with warm, clear, shallow water, and this is the point in the trip where most people stop taking photographs.

If lying down gets dull there is snorkelling, diving and sailing off the same beach.

Day 11 Sigiriya , Pidurangala

You cross back into the Cultural Triangle to Sigiriya. In the afternoon you climb either Sigiriya itself, a fifth century citadel on top of a rock, past the frescoes and the lion paws, or Pidurangala opposite it.

Pidurangala is a scramble at the top rather than stairs, and it is the place to photograph Sigiriya rather than stand on it. Doing one in the afternoon and the other at dawn is the better plan if you have the legs.

Day 12 Polonnaruwa ancient ruins , Negombo village tour

Polonnaruwa was the capital from the eleventh to the thirteenth century and its ruins are the best preserved on the island. You walk the main group: Lankathilaka, Thuparamaya, the royal palace, Rankoth Vehera and the Buddha figures cut from the rock at Gal Viharaya. A bicycle is the easiest way round it.

Afterwards you drive west to Negombo for the last night, close to the airport.

Day 13 flight home

Your driver-guide takes you to the airport, twenty minutes up the road. Unless your flight is very early there is time for breakfast first.
