About this trip

About this route

Two countries in one trip. Seven nights in Sri Lanka covering the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the tea country and Colombo, then a short flight to the Maldives for three nights of reef, boat and beach.

The pairing works because the flight from Colombo to Male is about an hour, and because the two halves ask nothing of each other. Sri Lanka is the moving part of the holiday. The Maldives is the part where you stop.

The Sri Lanka week is private, with your own vehicle and driver-guide throughout. In the Maldives you are on one island and the resort handles the boats.

Why this route works

  • One flight of about an hour between the two halves, so you are not losing a day to travel.
  • The whole Sri Lankan week is front loaded, which means the last three days need nothing of you.
  • Both ancient capitals, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the upcountry train all fit inside the seven nights.
  • The Maldives days are built around the water: dolphins in the morning, reef in the afternoon, turtles if they show.

Who it suits

  • Honeymoons, and anyone who wants one trip to do both the sightseeing and the lying down.
  • First visits to either country.
  • Travellers who would rather end a holiday on an island than in traffic.

Who it does not suit

  • If you want to see southern Sri Lanka, this route does not go there. Ten nights in Sri Lanka alone would.
  • If you are not comfortable in or on the water, three Maldives days is a long time.

Included activities

  • Sigiriya rock fortress
  • Polonnaruwa ancient city
  • Elephant safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla
  • Matale spice garden and the Aluvihara rock temple
  • Embekke, Lankathilaka and Gadaladeniya temples
  • Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the Peradeniya botanical gardens
  • Cultural dance performance
  • Upcountry train ride and a tea plantation and factory visit
  • Colombo city tour
  • Sunset and night fishing trip in the Maldives
  • Dolphin cruise, snorkelling and diving

Best time to go

Both halves share a season. December to April is dry in the Maldives and dry on Sri Lanka’s west coast, which is where this route begins and ends. The Cultural Triangle and Kandy work all year. If you travel between May and September expect rain on the Sri Lankan side and a better price on both.

How booking works

Send your dates through the enquiry form on this page, or message us on WhatsApp. You get back a day by day plan with the hotels named and a price for your group. Nothing is held or charged while you think about it.

To confirm, we ask for a deposit of 50 percent of the total, with the balance due at least five days before you arrive. Bookings made within ten days of arrival are paid in full at the time of booking. Card payments are handled by PayHere, and a booking is confirmed only once we send you written confirmation.

Prices shown here are per person in US dollars and cover the Sri Lankan side, based on the level 1 hotels. The Maldives resort, the Colombo to Male flight and the transfer to the island are quoted separately, because the price moves with the resort and the season. Cancellation terms are set out in our refund policy.

Day by day

A plan, not a timetable. Any day can be swapped once you are here.

Day 1 City tour of Negombo

Your driver-guide meets you at the airport and drives you the twenty minutes to Negombo. It is a short first drive on purpose.

If you are awake enough there is the Dutch canal, the fort gate and the beach. If not, the day is yours to sleep off the flight.

Day 2 Elephant Orphanage , Sigiriya

You leave the coast and head inland. There is a stop on the way at an elephant care foundation, a charity that looks after domesticated elephants, where the keepers explain how each animal came to be there.

After lunch you carry on to Sigiriya. The rock is kept for the late afternoon, when the heat has gone. It is over a thousand steps past the frescoes to a fifth century citadel on the summit.

Day 3 Ruins of Polonnaruwa , Visit National Park

Polonnaruwa in the morning. The capital from the eleventh to the thirteenth century is the best preserved ancient city on the island, and you walk the main group: Lankathilaka, Thuparamaya, the royal palace, Rankoth Vehera and the rock cut Buddhas at Gal Viharaya.

In the afternoon you take a jeep into Minneriya or Kaudulla, whichever the elephants have moved to that week, with a tracker who knows the park.

Day 4 Spice Garden , Buddhist Temples

The road to Kandy runs through Matale, where you stop at a spice garden to see cinnamon, pepper and cardamom grown and processed, and at the Aluvihara rock temple where the Buddhist canon was first written down.

In the afternoon you drive out of Kandy to three temples that most visitors never reach: Embekke, with its carved wooden pillars, Lankathilaka on its rock, and Gadaladeniya in stone.

Day 5 Temple of the Tooth , Botanical Gardens

A full day in Kandy. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic holds the most important Buddhist relic in the country and your visit is timed around the puja, when the shrine is opened and the drummers play.

The Peradeniya botanical gardens are the largest in Sri Lanka and take a slow half day. Otherwise there is the forest reserve above the town, the market, and the view from Upper Lake Drive. The evening is the dance and drumming show.

Day 6 Upcountry Train Ride , Visit Tea Plantation

The upcountry train takes you into the mountains, through tea estates and small stations with the valleys opening below. It is a working service, rarely quiet and rarely on time, and it is the part of Sri Lanka most people remember.

Your driver-guide meets you at Nanu Oya and drives you up to Nuwara Eliya, a hill station the British built and never quite left, cool enough in the evening to want a jacket. There is a tea plantation and factory on the way.

Day 7 Colombo city tour

A long, scenic drive down out of the mountains to Colombo, through tea, then paddy, then the city.

In the afternoon you see Colombo with your driver-guide: the Pettah market streets, the old Fort quarter, the Hindu temples on Sea Street and the Dutch church at Wolvendaal. The evening is free for the restaurants or an early night before the flight.

Day 8 Fiery sunsets and night fishing safari

A short drive to the airport and the flight to Male, which takes about an hour. You are met on arrival and taken to the island by speedboat or seaplane, depending on where the resort sits.

The afternoon is for checking in and doing nothing. If you want the evening on the water there is a night fishing trip, and the kitchen will cook what you catch.

Day 9 Dolphin Cruise , Manta Ray Watching

Out early by boat to look for dolphins, which travel in large pods in these waters and are usually found within an hour.

The rest of the day belongs to the reef. This is among the best snorkelling and diving anywhere, and manta rays are the ones to hope for. You come back in at sunset.

Day 10 Swimming with Turtles , Snorkeling , Scuba Diving

Another day in the water. There are over 700 species of reef fish here, and the diving and snorkelling are as good in the shallows as they are on the drop off.

Green and hawksbill turtles feed on the reefs around many of the islands. If they are willing you swim alongside them, which needs patience and no chasing.

Day 11 flight home

The resort transfers you back to Male for your flight home.
